Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

  7:14pm Scяaps:

I don’t have my icon, snif. wfmu app for ipad doesn’t do icons, apparently. And since covid time, regular wfmu.org in chrome for ipad doesn’t do comments at all. snif!
  7:17pm Scяaps:

Scraps!!!! Great to have you here :D

Gold diggers of '87 : an 80s musical about the crash of '87!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Webhamster Henry:

Sorry I missed you last week! -- I'll hit the archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Actually last week was a repeat of the week before due to technical difficulties!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Webhamster Henry:

OK! I missed nuffin!
Avatar 🎭 7:41pm Listener Gregory:

This show is so good that I'm actually going to do the dishes so that I can keep listening to it. If that isn't a sincere compliment, I don't know what is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Bronwyn Bishop:

aww thanks so much gregory :)))
Avatar 🎭 7:42pm Listener Gregory:

Also, I agree with you completely on the "Broadway X of Year" title. Perhaps you should call your show Musical Dandies of 2020 or something.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Webhamster Henry:

The Inaugurietes of 1960 << Stan Freberg's fake Revue of the 1960 election (which at the time was in the future).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I had to give up on Gold Diggers of 2020 because it was a bad idea, but I will do something with that construction someday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Good one Henry!! Someday I should do a whole show of just "x of year" shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Quick warning that the show is around 6 minutes short this week...but soon there will be no such technical difficulties because the show will soon be gloriously LIVE!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Webhamster Henry:

FAME is 40 years old!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

It sure is. I've never seen it but the remake came out in 2009 when I was attending a performing arts high school. We all thought it was dumb as hell
Avatar 🎭 8:01pm Listener Gregory:

"New Masked Faces of 2020!"
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Webhamster Henry:

You have to understand the Film Musical Landscape of the time. Pretty dismal! And there were lots of talented kids there!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Webhamster Henry:

It was lots better than FootLoose which came out in '84.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm spodiodi:

hi Bronwyn, Scяaps, Webhamster Henry, Gregory, all!
Avatar 🎭 8:08pm Listener Gregory:

The Paul Motian On Broadway series is fantastic, IMHO. It ranges from trio to larger band to vocal things.
And hi, Spodio'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: I've never seen the original, I'm sure it's much better. And to be fair to the remake, I haven't seen it in 11 years so it might be better than I remember, and I think we were all pretty determined to hate it because of our inferiority complex towards the NYC performing arts school
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey spodiodi :D
Avatar 🎭 8:14pm Listener Gregory:

The moaning is by the piano player, who is not Keith Jarrett.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm spodiodi:

is there a name for that murmuring voice kinda thing that one often hears in jazz recordings?
  8:16pm Scяaps:

Animal on light jazz piano
  8:17pm Scяaps:

Fame the original was pretty lousy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm spodiodi:

but you liked the tv show? (i did)
  8:25pm Scяaps:

Didn’t watch the tv show
  8:26pm Scяaps:

ahhhh sondheim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I liked Fame the TV show...somehow I saw that but not the movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm spodiodi:

gotcha, Scяaps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm northguineahills:

I knew a bit about musicals before, and have a quite a few albums, but I actually had an online conversation about musicals the other day, and got all the references, and it's thanks to you (musicals, probably my last musical frontier).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm spodiodi:

i saw both the movie and the tv series, and we did a little production at my grade school that was pretty silly, but we had a lot of fun . ... all the kids seemed to be into it..... i think because the tv show's popularity at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Bronwyn Bishop:

aww thanks ngh <3 im so glad i can provide this service haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm spodiodi:

howdy, ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm northguineahills:

(if you can do any more Weimar era musicals, it's my favorite musical genre).

I have the Fame sndrk on vinyl. saw the the tv show, but I was 6-10 years old, so, I wouldn't have gotten the references at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I love the weimar stuff!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm northguineahills:

word, spodiodi!

@spodiodi: you probably know about the show, Babylon Berlin. It's all things in the pre-nazi era. It is glorious!
Avatar 🎭 8:36pm Listener Gregory:

Have to admit I am very concerned about the missing 6 minutes. What will I do with my time then??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm spodiodi:

ngh, Babylon Berlin: yes, we watched one or two (i think). i should give it anohter chance. mzspodi's sister really likes it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@gregory: wash some more dishes ;)
Avatar 🎭 8:45pm Listener Gregory:

Thank God there are no more! I will just try to hold my breath, until I pass out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Bronwyn Bishop:

careful now!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm northguineahills:

@spodiodi: I highly recommend it. Not only does it show one of the most free and artistic moments in Europe in the 20th c., it also shows the rise of fascism as a cautionary tale.
Avatar 🎭 8:55pm Listener Gregory:

Excellent show, BB. Now I prepare to enter the void.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Webhamster Henry:

Ah here is the stream again! Are you unhappy darling? Yes, completely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm northguineahills:

@Bronwyn: Down w/ this Thing (Father Ted reference)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm spodiodi:

thanks, Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm spodiodi:

i'll have another look for sure, ngh!
