There's an Erik Frandsen's song "Viking Rag" ends with Hackensack as the punchline.

Bacharach has a tune "Hasbrouck (sic) Heights", which is next door to Hackensack. Bacharach in Hackensack ... that might be a good lyric!

I started listening around 1987, and I should have been listening earlier. There was a tiny bit of freeform on WBAI (Peter Bochan, some of the remaining music peopel, Citizen Kafka's revival of the Free Music Store...) and so I fell hard for FMU.
I put them on the pre-www internet ("gopherspace"), made a lot of features for the original WFMU website, helped get the station streaming, & wrote the first version of the iOS WFMU app.

At my workplace, we get some kids’ audiobooks referring to themselves as “board books” and I’m like, can an audiobook really be a “board book”? And also you want to charge HOW much for this 3-minute reading?!?

Arts and Letters Daily had a column: Diversions. 'FMU was on the list. Irwin Chusid was playing a recording of a live telephone conversation between the engineer of a runaway train and the track manager at the train station. I lived for a time in the area this took place. Hooked right then and there. 2013.

September 14, 1992. First real postcollege job, my new boss on my first day said, "I listen to this weird college radio station. If it ever bugs you, I can change the channel." It never did and he never did. Was pledging by the 1993 Marathon and volunteering by 1997 or so.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm

It was, and I quote, "because of that fuckin' bet I made with Andy." Andy Breckman is a traditionally legit reason to swear.

Late 93, went to college in NJ, disappointed by college’s 10-watt station, thought FMU did not play enough indie rock at first, but it was hard to pick up WPRB or WNYU. Was annoyed by shows like Laura Cantrell (thought I hated country) but after a while I started to like it. And the scary Davie and Goliath Show (or whatever it was called) went away.

The first actual time I heard WFMU was like 1989 or so, an accidental land on an Hour of Slack. The first DJ I heard was in 1990, Bronwyn C. Sammy Davis Jr. had just died, and Bronwyn, then the Death queen, played his "Got a Lotta Living to Do," then after it ended, said, "That was Sammy Davis Junior. GET IT??!"
