Just looked up the Valley of the Dolls film; evidently Harlan Ellison did a script polish on it but took his name off when they lightened up the ending. So among this film's virtues is ticking off that dyspeptic putz.

Best finds before corona: A Hard Day's Night, original UK Mono for 20 euros. Rear cover scruffy, record cheap for its value, and those old mono pressings are L-O-U-D.

But the owner had glued pictures of Beatles over the "Parlophone" labels, so I was quite pissed off, until I realized they were genuine prints not magazine cuttings. And then, "there is some writing... Paul McCartney. Ringo Starr..... !!!!!!"

(please note those autographs could be fake. But compared to some online samples - they look quite genuine to me. It is possible they were trophies from either one of Beatles' visits to Sweden - the closest they ever came to Finland. The previous owner's name on the cover is Finnish, and also many Finns emigrated to Sweden during 1960s)

@4:09 Bas NL:
even if the signatures were some hustler's attempts at striking gold, the record is worth the 20 euros. Good music, good mono sound, good pressing (scratches do not manage to ruin the listening experience). I have read from many places mono mixes were the ones closer to what the (UK) artists wanted, as they at least had the option to be present, whereas stereo was so new the mixing situation was literally a case of an environment with engineers in white coats - "do not disturb".

Liner notes on the CD ask, "Do you remember the first time you heard a progressive rock album?" Well, yes, I do. In fact, it was the very album depicted there in the notes, Close to the Edge. It was an 8-track tape, '72 or '73.

Used car market is very tight due to low inventory, according to my car dealer son. Prices are high right now. Make sure they show you comps they use for the basis of their check amount -- they "should" be giving you enough money to buy one based on what other recent cars sold for, not "book" value

Yep, scratches and dings and bumpers misaligned can get expensive. Wish we were nearby, my son could hook you up -- he goes to dealer auctions that run 1,000+ cars a week. Every vehicle we've owned the last 10 year except for one came through him.

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Nah, they'll scrap it or sell it for parts. If they fix a car that was totaled, they have to sell it with a salvage title, which means they have to sell it at a reduced price. Insurance companies will only insure a partial amount with a salvage title.

I'll ask my son if he knows anyone up there who might help you out. I know he's bought a few things up there, not sure if they were through a dealer network. If he thinks he can put you in touch with someone, I'll DM his info on twitter if you like. It looks like Manheim (the big auction company he deals with) has a weekly auction in Fairfield NJ

First car accident: two weeks after I got my license. I was turning left against stopped oncoming traffic, having been waved ahead by a driver. (Please don't ever do that.) Another car was speeding along the shoulder. Wham. Took the citation to court and won.

Second car accident: I was t-boned by a nun who was gabbing with her passenger through the red light.

Third car accident: Eastbound on I-5 near downtown LA an 18-wheeler drifted to the right into my lane, sent my car hurling around, ending up in front of the truck perpendicular to traffic. I saw the word MACK emblazoned above my driver's side window. Trucker stopped without further incident.

I never understood why to lease, because after it ends, you have nothing, unless you buy it out. But it works for some.

I've long felt that in California, at least, it should be one strike and you're out. One serious moving violation and no more drivers license. Of course, I'd have lost mine long ago, but we'd have, what?, 10% of the drivers on the road. Much like the first few months of COVID.
