Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm northguineahills:

@Julie: The Tintern Abbey band, had a guitarist in a history class in uni. So, we got on very well, and gave me the demo cassette... I have a friend, still in NYC, that wants to do a comp of FL shoegaze/psyche of the 90s of people's bands we knew.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Julie:

oh that sounds amazing! Hi Sylvia, Stanley, Phillipe and James!
Avatar 3:03pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

oh, that's a good one :D
thank you <3

Hi Julie & dark knights
Avatar 3:10pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

is the temp ok in your apartment now, Julie?
Avatar 3:10pm βrian:

@Doug: In a work meeting, someone mentioned "the aggregate snarls." Naturally, I thought of your first band.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Julie:

haha it was, AC and all. But now it's coming in hot again pfft
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Julie:

Hi Brainy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm northguineahills:

Voltaire? a wee bit high-brow bar to go over (new to me).
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Julie:

Voltaire is often silly but sometimes he's quite great
Avatar 3:14pm βrian:

Our six-year old used to get livid if we called her silly. Now she smiles and tilts her head: "Yeah, I know."
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
You'll be hearing from the lawyers representing Aggregate Snarls UK.

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Julie:

I HATE ARRIVING LATE
Avatar 3:28pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

But hello everyone!
Avatar 3:30pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Dammitt, I tried to order the Craig Smith 2fer lp, Apache/Inca. The order was cancelled TWICE by the mailing system the US-based shop had. Like paid and then very soon refunded.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Julie:

hiya Cha Cha!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Julie:

ugh that is frustrating
Avatar 3:32pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Pity I was not home when you played Craig Smith - but huge thanks anyway Julie! Love Is Our Existence is surprisingly hard to find, even as a CD - a 2018 release, you would think otherwise, but no.
Avatar 3:33pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:32 Julie: yes! The postage was like $5 for a 2-lpto FINLAND... sounded too good to be true and I gave up after two attempts.
Avatar 3:39pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

out on November 13!
Avatar 3:42pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

oh, fruits, yes! haha
Avatar 3:45pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

We wanted to go visit the Hearst Castle as well, but it was too pricey for the thing. Like you would pay entrance, but had to choose from several packages (kitchen + room blablabla, or garden +...). You couldn't just go and visit the whole place at your leisure. So we didn't.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Julie:

I kinda hate structure sometimes
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm chris:

hi, Julie and folks.
Sylvia, Hearst Castle is quite something to experience. i forget which tiny bit we paid too much to see. yes, they seem to have the money grubbing down pat, like the namesake, who was also a racist asshole, in addition to being a philandering prick.
Avatar 3:53pm C.S.:

"Rosebud"
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Julie:

I would like to go back to that part of CA, very pretty
Avatar 3:54pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

also, they take you to the Castle by bus, you have to stay with your group. ugh.
I'm sure it's a marvel to see, Chris. And yes, the politics and morals around it don't help.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Julie:

I doubt anyone who has a castle has a lot of great qualities
Avatar 3:56pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

exactly
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Stanley:

I was in LA for a week in 2005 and went to Hearst Castle. Didn't think it was extortionate and enjoyed the experience but you had the bus/group thing. Maybe things have changed sine then. He obviously had much more money than taste.
Avatar 3:59pm C.S.:

@ Julie...well there is Hammond Castle local to my neck of the woods. It was the residence of an inventor. Very interesting place: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Julie:

Gosh I was hoping that was Hammond organ related
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Julie:

I would go to Hammond Castle, Moog Castle, Mellotron Castle
Avatar 4:02pm C.S.:

Nope but they do have a very big organ there and used to give performances. It no longer works according to wiki.
Avatar 4:03pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

re: Moody Blues, I finally did my homework and listened to THAT album. The one I have had for 25 years. It was maybe a bit too much for me as I thought this was something my later mother would've enjoyed sooooo something went to my eye quick enough.
Avatar 4:04pm C.S.:

Thinking of the character Rimmer from Red Dwarf right now who loved Hammond organ music...much ot the dismay of his shipmates.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Julie:

ChaCha Days of Future Passed?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Julie:

been a long time since I saw that show, that's one detail I don't recall
  4:07pm Dean:

The person at front on this Genesis cover is Anthony Phillips, the band's first guitarist. Worth checking out his ample solo discography, e.g., The Geese & the Ghost.
Avatar 4:07pm C.S.:

I remember they did one episode that had the closing theme song done on a Hammond Organ.
Avatar 4:07pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:05 Julie: yes!

Once again, I find it so hard to understand how the likes of The Moody Blues, early Bee Gees and early Genesis were dismissed by contemporary "serious" rock critics. As well as Donovan...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Julie:

Dean he sings?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm sim:

This Genesis sounds like the Moody Blues, early Floyd. I never really got into Genesis. I guess I'm going to bootstrap myself.
Avatar 4:08pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:07 Dean: thanks for the tip Dean - seeing your name reminds me I really have to start a certain translation project :)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm chris:

Minnie! <3
  4:08pm Dean:

A bit on some of his more pop, less folk, albums. Phil Collins sings on the first solo album, Geese.
Avatar 4:08pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

wondering if Minnie Riperton consented to that cover pic or not
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Julie:

sim, that first Genesis album is like nothing else they did. Highly recommend!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Julie:

ooh definitely will have to check that out
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm sim:

Thanks for the tip, Julie! And the great DJ-ing.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Julie:

my pleasure!
  4:11pm Dean:

Photocopy: I saw ... something ... recently that reminded me of you, but I can't remember what it was. Something like a recent festival where a band we've discussed might have appeared. Nuts.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Julie:

and from genesis to revelation definitely go DELUXE, some great things on there
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm chris:

rusty French. "i will love him"?
Avatar 4:13pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Julie, one more reason to check out Felt besides Creation records & Cocteau Twins - Martin Duffy, better known from primal Scream, played keyboards on the later Felt albums. Though I prefer the earlier stuff with all the heavenly guitars - plus Robin Guthrie's production on THAT album (and Elizabeth Fraser on THAT track)
Avatar 4:14pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

I used to love him @Chris
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm chris:

merci, Sylvia!
Avatar 4:16pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

avec plaisir!
  4:17pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

If i ever get my hands on J.R. i'm gonna slap him
Avatar 4:18pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:08 Sylvia (France-NYC): yes, plenty of 70s record covers provoke some questions whether everything was alright. Virgin killers by Scorpions being the most obvious (and the most tasteless) example.
Avatar 4:19pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

omg, I went to see that cover °_°
  4:20pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Sickest album title ever was Leningrad Cowboys album, 'We Cum from Brooklyn'
Avatar 4:21pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Cha Cha pretty sure not everything was alright. music industry has a lot of reckoning to do
  4:22pm Dean:

I had that Scorpions album. Sold it, not thinking what I was giving up. It is pretty awful.

There's also Chinga Chavin's Country Porn. Beware: https://www.discogs.com/Chinga-Chavin-Chinga-Chavins-Country-Porn/release/2488170
  4:23pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Strawbs
  4:23pm Dean:

To my puerile mind, however, the masters of embarrassing tastelessness were The Mentors.
  4:24pm Dean:

But that Scorpions album was criminal.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Stanley:

Sylvia - Je l'amias. My schoolboy memory says the past imperfect?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm chris:

omg, you do *not* want to see that virgin killers album cover. yikes!
  4:25pm Mr. Nobody:

Hey all. Snoozed a bit long after dental work earlier. Looks like I missed some good stuff.
Avatar 4:25pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Stanley yes it's imparfait
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Julie:

I hope you got the good drugs!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Stanley:

Blimey - it's all still the ol' brainbox!
Avatar 4:26pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Chris I'm surprised (shocked) it's available for the eyes to see without a warning on wikipedia
  4:26pm Mr. Nobody:

A pat on the back and told to take advil.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Stanley:

*in*
  4:26pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

all hail Chinga Chavin
  4:27pm Mr. Nobody:

Okay not a real pat on the back. I mean we are in Covid times and all.
Avatar 4:27pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I wonder why that girl's parents gave consent for that "Virgin Killers" picture - not that a non-consensual picture would've been too good either. If it is of any consolation, not the Scorpions' idea.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Julie:

JUST advil? For dentai work. yikes
Avatar 4:28pm βrian:

J'aimais l'imparfait et je l'aime toujours.

DJ Michele doesn't like the word "parfait."
  4:28pm Mr. Nobody:

Yeah I figured I would get at least some Tylenol 3 for a root canal but no. Oh well. Advil for lunch and dinner it is.
Avatar 4:32pm βrian:

We call it vitamin I.
(Ours is a world of pain.)
Avatar 4:33pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

I like this one
  4:33pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

i swear i'm gonna strike oil soon, even if J.R. thinks i paid 2 million dollars for a sand trap
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Julie:

I only get one advil a day for my issues (can't take things that thin the blood). That is why I ended up on MMJ. It was that or opioids (I have those too but for emergencies where I need to function)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Julie:

yeah I hadn't listened to them in ages, Boston band.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:35pm chris:

similar pain mgmnt routine here, Julie. yesterday needed big guns. today, back to usual. grateful for that.
  4:35pm Mr. Nobody:

One a day? Yikes. I take them 3+ at a time.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Julie:

that's actually a pretty big allowance considering my blood thinners. The only time I use it is for sinus headaches, advil C&S is all that works.
  4:37pm Mr. Nobody:

Digging the mellow music right now
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Julie:

and then it got loud, sorry!
  4:38pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Julie do u ever play Wang Chung?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Julie:

I don't believe I have. I only know their two hits.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Julie:

the first hour was super mellow, Mr Nobody sorry you missed it
  4:39pm Mr. Nobody:

Hahaha. I figured as soon as I said something the next song wouldn't be.
  4:40pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Points On A Curve is a classic album
  4:40pm Mr. Nobody:

All good.
  4:40pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Julie:

Back when they were Huang Chung?
  4:41pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

no, after that
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Julie:

I did have the Dance Hall Days 45, I didn't like Wang Chung tonight as much
  4:42pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

but im impressed that u know that, despite not having heard their classic album
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Julie:

I feel like a lot of those 80s bands started out a little dark (Human league, psychedelic furs) then made it big when they went more pop
  4:43pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Every track on Points On A Curve is a winner; Trent Reznor was hugely into it

They did better in Europe than in the US. From Southern California.
Avatar 4:53pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

"Where were you when Julie played Felt for the first time on her show?"

"Home. Happy."
Avatar 4:55pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Also, The Asteroid No.4 sounds like they are on the same wavelength. I'm a sucker for that kind of music. In the 80s I was young and stupid and did not give a toss for that sort of stuff when John Peel played it - funnily enough, he did NOT like Felt.
  4:57pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Peel reached Helsinki?
  4:58pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

Julie, Denim were even better than Felt
Avatar 5:01pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:57 Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief: whole Finland in fact. He had shows for Radio Bremen in Germany for instance, and since 1987 for finnish broadcast company YLE (radio channel 2,and three years later Radiomafia - yes, a national radio channel was called that - Radiomafia in its first years from 1990 on it was awesome, lotsa specialty shows every evening)
  5:02pm Dean:

I *almost* played this LZ album yesterday.
Avatar 5:03pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I HATE MY VINYL IS WARPED!!!!

(Led Zeppelin III that is)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Stanley:

Led Zep III Yay!
Avatar 5:04pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

My faves are the even-numbered ones: II, IV and Physical Graffiti - wait, that one does not have a number on its title, oh well...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Stanley:

Loved the cover on this one.
Avatar 5:05pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@5:04 Stanley: Physical Graffiti also has a cover you can get creative with.
  5:05pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

III by far the best
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Julie:

Houses of the Holy is..uncomfortable
  5:07pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

in thru the Ausdoor 2nd best
Avatar 5:08pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@5:06 Julie: you mean the cover? The musical content is a bit of a letdown. Physical Graffiti was much much better but a lot of the songs were outtakes from previous years, like on many a Rolling Stones album.
  5:08pm Dean:

The album HotH, or the track? I quite like the album.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Julie:

growing up my sister had the album from the movie. i just remember Moby Dick. @Cha Cha yeah the cover. A couple of the songs are good though.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For a while, I had a cassette with I and II. Every day for like six months, I'd play 15 or 20 minutes of it and flip the cassette over when it reached the end.
  5:09pm Ken Kercheval's 'kerchief:

hardly outtakes, more like leftovers
  5:09pm Dean:

Hipgnosis is to blame
  5:09pm Mr. Nobody:

Haha this has been stuck in my head for at least a week.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Stanley:

P/Cha Cha - yes, I remember now. Overdue a re-visit, methinks, though being a double there may be some tracks that haven't worn well.
Avatar 5:11pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

In spite of nearly 35 years of Floyd fandom I have never seen this cover of Apples and Oranges.
  5:11pm Dean:

Roy Harper's HQ, issued in the US as When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease, is grafting of guys from LZ, PF, and King Crimson (Bruford). Great album.
Avatar 5:12pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I LOVE THIS.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Julie:

Cha Cha yeah found it on discogs, cute isn't it?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Julie:

I have a couple of Roy's but not that one
Avatar 5:14pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I can't get over the fact I did not go to see 'em live when it was possible in 2008. Apprenetly those X-Ray Spex gigs (or just one gig?) were really really good.
  5:14pm Dean:

Wasn't that "Apples and Oranges" supposed to wait for next hour?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Julie:

nah it's a teaser.. I'm doing bands not songs
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Julie:

  5:15pm Dean:

Oh, right, of course.
Avatar 5:19pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Thanks to you Julie, I have a 1992 vinyl of Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes on its merry way to me! Before this show I had never realized how good music she makes (and therefore missed all the opportunities to see her live)

Avatar 5:24pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@5:20 Julie: it was like a bit over $30, but then again, for 90s vinyl you'll have to pay 100+ (euros, dollars, pounds) nowadays. A pity since a lot of vinyl nowadays is so badly done it is as if it was meant for a collector's fetish object instead of a means for listening to music.
Avatar 5:25pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Hahaha I'm out of it. For a second I thought you were saying your show was going to be 6 or 7 hours long next week. Oh boy
Avatar 6:16pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Or songs sung by the person in the band who usually is not in charge of the vocalist duties; I guess Queen has some of these.

songs from albums with "songs" on the title
  6:31pm Dean:

All instrumentals? Bands with numbers (numeral or spelled out) in their names? Proto-bands, kinda like The Tourists track you played? So, instead of Cheap Trick, Fuse. Instead of Gentle Giant, Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Instead of Joy Division, Warsaw.
Avatar 6:36pm C.S.:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Julie:

it comes from Hair originally
Avatar 6:38pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:31 Dean: good idea, pity that there is not much Warsaw stuff legally out there. I am not sure about the 1977 demo. An Ideal For living was recorded a few weeks before the name change.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Julie:

the label thing might work
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Julie:

yeah I have not heard any warsaw
Avatar 6:39pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

but released as Joy Division
Avatar 6:39pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Yes! I had an idea, before I even knew you were gonna play Felt - an hour's worth of Creation records?
  6:39pm Dean:

Buddy of mine has the Warsaw 12". Bought it at the time it was issued.
Avatar 6:40pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:39 Dean: you mean the one with Gutz, At a Later Date, The Kill? It's a bootleg.
  6:42pm Dean:

Hmmm, I think it's Ideal For Living, but that is JD. I could swear, though, that the 12" I saw way back then was credited to Warsaw (also a song on the EP).
Avatar 6:44pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:42 Dean: that is An Ideal For Living, Warsaw is the opening track. Released as Joy Division, and I would not be surprised if they had decided the name change around the time of the recording, as they played only a couple of gigs after its recording in December 1977. This could be because they were booked as Warsaw. Then again, I was not there, just pure speculation.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm spodiodi:

i didn't know i liked Fiona Apple until hearing Shameika just now

(i don't know any other songs)
  6:46pm Dean:

How about bands named after and fronted by individuals all starting with the letter M? Madonna, Meat Loaf, Max Romeo...
Avatar 6:47pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:46 Dean: or bands with a name of a person that has nothing to do with its members names, like Paavoharju has no member called Paavo Harju.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Crosstown Traffic' by Hendrix features kazoo - not a solo...
Fiona could bring her riding crop to that song I think...
