The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

@8:50 WLSClark: listening with a phone is very weird if the phone's so antiquated like mine where you can't open the chat page. Did this often on my night-time swimming trips this summer. The music was as good as always, but a certain element was not there...

It was excellent hearing East West mono. Mainly because it's never been on of my faves. But while listening to it in mono it reminded me of how unique and special of a track it is. I remember the first time in 3009 when I heard Sgt. Pepper in mono. Jeesh night and day. When the transferred it to stereo it messed up the phasing this making it a tenth of the truly psychedelic album that it truly was in mono.

@10:27 Gaylord Fields: it has been quite a mind-blowing thing for me to find the mono versions of all that 60s stuff I "learned from stereo" (from 70s&80s re-releases), and to realize the mono versions were the artist-sanctioned ones (the stereo being the white coat territory). Especially when speaking of the big ones, like Sgt. Pepper or Piper At the gates of Dawn. The subtle differences (like the one you pointed out) make the discoveries I get from listening experiences even more fascinating.

@WLSClark: I didn't start buying LPs until the mid-'70s, and I had a better chance of finding a quadrophonic pressing than a mono copy. But it was useful subsequently learning that for '60s stuff, mono was often your better bet sonically for the reasons that Photocopy Cha Cha 2000 @10:27 pointed out. That's why I have the entire '60s US mono Hollies LP discography, all bought in the early '80s for peanuts.

Bob i haven't listened to soft machine II in a minute but i wouldn't usually expect a smooth transition except to play an entire album side.

Hot Rats was the second FZ album I ever bought after "Zoot Allures" was my gateway. Once I got past there being no funny lyrics like Zoot it quickly became one of my favorites of his entire catalog even forty years after first hearing it!

I saw Zappa at the Nassau Coliseum in '74 - through the entire show there was a lawn chair on stage with a guy covered in newspapers. The entire show. Zappa came back for his first encore, launched into Willie The Pimp, and Beefheart stood up from under the newspapers and grabbed the mic and sang the tune!! He was under there for two hours!!!!
