I make wild guess, Columbia?
Avatar 🚂 12:17pm
YETI BOB:

The mathematician in me is wondering how one chooses a country at random, in a fair way. Any method that involves pointing at a map will bias toward countries with larger area. And then there's the distortion caused by the map projection (well-known Greenland effect on old Mercator maps). But even spinning the globe and pointing, I think, will create a bias toward the countries closer to the poles - if you're choosing both latitude and longitude at random, there's the same amount of longitude spread over more miles at the Equator. So the best way is probably just to pick from a list of names.
Avatar 🚂 12:17pm

This reminds me, isn't it about time the state of Indiana changed it's name?

Stanley:

Hi David and denizens of the subway.
When I was a kid, to put me asleep, my father used to spin the globe and I would stop it with my finger on a random country. We would read the country's entry in the children's encyclopedia and I would fall asleep dreaming about that country. No wonder I developed a great desire to travel later in life.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Handy Haversack:

@YB: Numbered alphabetical list of countries, random.org to generate an integer in that range. Is how I'd do it.
Avatar 🚂 12:24pm

(Of course, if the number of choices were any easy multiple of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, or 20, I'd use dice! I mean, I have a LOT of dice.)

David, the most common and therefore useful way to find a d4 is to step on it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Sem:

Trainees! First sighting of that one, Bas. Nice, nice.
Avatar 🚂 12:44pm
YETI BOB:

@HH: The point is that the number doesn't have to be divisible. Just round up to something that is, and roll again if the roll is too high. It's perfectly fair, introduces no bias. (And it's a standard technique in math&physics).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm

@Yeti B. I'd be thrilled if I had such an affliction. Anything beyond the basics gets overwhelmingly confusing. Yet I recall I excelled at a differential calculus class ages ago. It's gone now..

YETI BOB:

Running my one-line random-country program (see above) I just learned that Bouvet Island is a country - it is an uninhabited subantarctic high island - "The most remote island in the world". Probably not much of a music scene there!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
David Dichelle:

YB: I could play an hour of wind sounds, I suppose.

Gotta have lac bugs before you can make shellac.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

@YB, I do it all the time! There are lists that do not at all conform to the dice I have at hand quite frequently. Because of course there are 34 first-level magician spells.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Doug Schulkind:

In some ways Wilfrido Vargas is my ideal selection to represent the D.R. There was a period in Nueva York (mid 1980s), when Wilfrido's music was, in certain neighborhoods, seemingly...EVERYWHERE. Dios mío, it was wonderful!
Avatar 🚂 12:59pm
YETI BOB:

Well, Bouvet Island it's a "dependency of Norway", so maybe it shouldn't count. But it's listed in ISO 3166-1 (which lists 249 "countries, territories, or areas of geographical interest"), probably the same list David is using.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Handy Haversack:

Way to go, Bas and Really Lisa!
Avatar 12:59pm

Thanks, Yeti Bob, that is a great link!

YETI BOB:

I'm doing a lot of armchair traveling lately. This map also shows some other interesting stats, such as clusters of record stores (defined as a collection of stores where there is at most one kilometer from one store to another). Not too surprised that the biggest cluster in the world is Berlin (some day I'll make it over there!). But also, the biggest cluster in North America is NOT in NYC, it's in Toronto! And I still haven't been to Toronto even though it's not that far from Chicago.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm

@Brian in UK: Hard to believe only 2 record stores in Cuba, considering how much musical heritage they have. But doing a quick search seems to confirm that there are very few record stores and records are mostly just sold in street markets (in terrible condition). Also found this fun article: "I Tried to Find a Record Store in Cuba and Ended Up Participating in a Santeria Ritual" - www.vice.com...

Thanks, David. I sure can't determine from the marketing emails I receive. E.g. one just now pitched airfare rewards points for a KLM / Air France loyalty programme if I book certain hotels. It's such a tease.

Could be, David. Some marketing emails know to frame the content as such.
Bas, yes, KLM is part of a 'Flying Blue' loyalty programme.. Ever since my last trip out of the US, to Northern France, they've been trying to wear me down :) My understanding is 'essential travel' is permitted, but one would have to prove it's essential, and have the flexibility (cushy job perks) to quarantine for 14 days at arrival airport vicinity. Not the case for me. So here I sit.

@Lisa: you can look up by country here: travel.state.gov... but it's a pretty crappy website

2 record stores in Cuba is wrong, i've been to several in Havana and Santiago. And every performer also actively sell their own CDR. Book stores also sell recordings. Of course this is all focused on Cuban music. International pop has a different generally known but officially underground means. All digital.
