	9:44am Irene Trudel: Hearing your story about cut-outs reminds me of how important they were to my own musical development. At a time when money was in short supply, I could take a chance on buying a few artists I'd never heard of but found the instrumentation interesting. Most of them are still in my collection.

	9:47am Irene Trudel: @Doug, it must've been so great to meet a musician you'd admired like Lateef and get to know him on a personal level.
	9:47am Doug Schulkind: Right, Irene?! Cut-outs and dollar-bin finds. The ability to explore and experiment and take chances on the unknown.
	9:48am Doug Schulkind: @Irene Yusef made everyone in his orbit feel that way. I know many who knew him more intimately, and they say he treated everyone with a great welcoming warmth.

	9:51am Irene Trudel: Absolutely Doug! Over time among my finds were entire catalogs Tim Buckley's and Early Genesis with Peter Gabriel. Also, so many Smithsonian Folkways records. Peter and I were just reminiscing about the amazing Tower Records Annex on W.4th Street and the things we discovered there. But some of my biggest finds were in average department stores like the defunct Two Guys and Bradlees chains.
	9:53am Doug Schulkind: Ohmigod, Irene. I must've snarfed up 300 Folkways LPs at the Tower Annex. At first, they were all a dollar, then 50¢, then four for a dollar. I bought multiple copies of many records and gave them away as gifts.
	🥁 9:53am Brian in UK: I found a copy of a Holy Modal Rounders record in our local ironmongers, late Sixties; nearly fell over when I saw it.

	9:55am Listener Gregory: In addition to cutouts, let us now praise famous Two-Fers, which is where I learned about Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, and innumerable others are cut rates.
	9:55am northguineahills: When Tower was going out of business, I made out like a bandit, alas, no Folkways rekkids. (but I got many from the OM discount bins and the ones under the main ones on the right.

	10:17am Doug Schulkind: I mean, this was a "jazz" record, released on the label of John Coltrane, in 1965. Never destined to become "popular" or a big-seller. But he followed his vision and fortunately found producers (Bob Thiele at Impulse, Joel Dorn at Atlantic) who supported him.
	10:19am Doug Schulkind: That... tone. Playing here with the great genius and patriarch of Detroit musicians, pianist Barry Harris.
	10:19am Webhamster Henry: Doug - what was the name of that weird , large junk shop on 27 or 28th street near FIT that had a huge number of disco single cut-outs? I found some interesting non-disco single material there.

	10:20am Doug Schulkind: @Webhamster Henry When I worked with Steinski over there I used to browse that place during lunchtime. Bought a ton of Mexican rock 'n' roll records one day.
	10:22am Doug Schulkind: @Webhamster Henry Come to think of it, Sir, you were very likely present at one of the great moments of my Yusef-loving life. At one of Steinski's salons. Didn't you used to go to them? One time the great Joel Dorn came along with his son Adam (who I just played as my music bed, performing as "Mocean Worker.") I'll tell the story about meeting Joel Dorn at that Steinski salon a little later in the show.
	10:24am northguineahills: @Henry: must have been before my day. My partner went to grad school at FIT, and I worked 8 blocks north, so I spent a lot of time around there.
	10:28am Doug Schulkind: Yusef became entranced, early on, with the little wind instruments the shanai, a multi-reed oboe-like woowdind, and the twin-tube Egyptian argol (or sometimes arghul), and he added their sound to recordings and performances throughout his life.

	10:43am Doug Schulkind: Yusef on bamboo flute on this number. The great Barry Harris is back, and fellow Detroiter Lex Humphries on drums. Bassist Ernie Farrow (who would later die in a swimming pool accident) back on the rabat.

	10:45am Doug Schulkind: On a number of his Atlantic records, produced by Joel Dorn, Yusef included the vocal textures of the Sweet Inspirations (including the revered Cissy Houston).
	10:47am Doug Schulkind: This song is a tribute to the key historic figure, minstrel dancer William Henry "Juba" Lane.
	10:47am adamdoesit: I didn't know Yusef didn't like the word "jazz." I wonder whether denying that word helped free him to play outside the (expanding, contracting) jazz canon.

	10:52am Doug Schulkind: @adamdoesit And at a certain point, because of his faith, Yusef began refusing to perform in venues that served alcohol. I'll tell a story about that.

	10:56am Listener Gregory: The word "jazz" is limiting and has definite baggage. But on the other hand, every musician who objects to it has made a different label, and so no new term reaches wide use. A phrase like Great Black Music make sense when the Art Ensemble uses it but can't readily be used by Europeans or White Americans who draw on the same tradition. So, I don't see a resolution to this.

	11:14am Doug Schulkind: Yusef worked with three brilliant pianists over the course of three decades, Barry Harris, Hugh Lawson, and the ivory-tickler on this number, Kenneth Barron (younger brother of the fine, underrated woodwind player Bill Barron).
	11:15am Doug Schulkind: The audience KILLS me on this record. What absurdly wonderful pleasure the musicians on the bandstand must've been feeling.

	11:23am Erella: I once found a box of strange tools. This was before the internet. I found that one was specifically for removing the crystals from (round) watches. It was easy. They would pop on and off. I figure out how to remove the watch hands and painted tiny dancing figures onto the existing watch faces and then reassemble everything. It was a huge thrill. Everyone got watches from thrift shops for christmas gifts that year.

	9:44am Irene Trudel: Hearing your story about cut-outs reminds me of how important they were to my own musical development. At a time when money was in short supply, I could take a chance on buying a few artists I'd never heard of but found the instrumentation interesting. Most of them are still in my collection.

	9:51am Irene Trudel: Absolutely Doug! Over time among my finds were entire catalogs Tim Buckley's and Early Genesis with Peter Gabriel. Also, so many Smithsonian Folkways records. Peter and I were just reminiscing about the amazing Tower Records Annex on W.4th Street and the things we discovered there. But some of my biggest finds were in average department stores like the defunct Two Guys and Bradlees chains.
	9:53am Doug Schulkind: Ohmigod, Irene. I must've snarfed up 300 Folkways LPs at the Tower Annex. At first, they were all a dollar, then 50¢, then four for a dollar. I bought multiple copies of many records and gave them away as gifts.
	🥁 9:53am Brian in UK: I found a copy of a Holy Modal Rounders record in our local ironmongers, late Sixties; nearly fell over when I saw it.

	10:17am Doug Schulkind: I mean, this was a "jazz" record, released on the label of John Coltrane, in 1965. Never destined to become "popular" or a big-seller. But he followed his vision and fortunately found producers (Bob Thiele at Impulse, Joel Dorn at Atlantic) who supported him.
	10:19am Doug Schulkind: That... tone. Playing here with the great genius and patriarch of Detroit musicians, pianist Barry Harris.

	10:20am Doug Schulkind: @Webhamster Henry When I worked with Steinski over there I used to browse that place during lunchtime. Bought a ton of Mexican rock 'n' roll records one day.
	10:22am Doug Schulkind: @Webhamster Henry Come to think of it, Sir, you were very likely present at one of the great moments of my Yusef-loving life. At one of Steinski's salons. Didn't you used to go to them? One time the great Joel Dorn came along with his son Adam (who I just played as my music bed, performing as "Mocean Worker.") I'll tell the story about meeting Joel Dorn at that Steinski salon a little later in the show.
	10:24am northguineahills: @Henry: must have been before my day. My partner went to grad school at FIT, and I worked 8 blocks north, so I spent a lot of time around there.
	10:28am Doug Schulkind: Yusef became entranced, early on, with the little wind instruments the shanai, a multi-reed oboe-like woowdind, and the twin-tube Egyptian argol (or sometimes arghul), and he added their sound to recordings and performances throughout his life.

	10:45am Doug Schulkind: On a number of his Atlantic records, produced by Joel Dorn, Yusef included the vocal textures of the Sweet Inspirations (including the revered Cissy Houston).
	10:47am Doug Schulkind: This song is a tribute to the key historic figure, minstrel dancer William Henry "Juba" Lane.

But on the other hand, every musician who objects to it has made a different label, and so no new term reaches wide use. A phrase like Great Black Music make sense when the Art Ensemble uses it but can't readily be used by Europeans or White Americans who draw on the same tradition. So, I don't see a resolution to this.

	11:23am Erella: I once found a box of strange tools. This was before the internet. I found that one was specifically for removing the crystals from (round) watches. It was easy. They would pop on and off. I figure out how to remove the watch hands and painted tiny dancing figures onto the existing watch faces and then reassemble everything. It was a huge thrill. Everyone got watches from thrift shops for christmas gifts that year.
