Richard Chartier | State | Mutatis Mutandis (V/A) | Spire | 2020 | collection compiled & produced by The Eternal Chord, a project by Mike Harding & Claire M Singer, which is based on Touch’s Spire, a long-running project centered on the sonic power of the organ. Almost no other instrument can trace a vector from the deep time of technology through to the present, and thus equal the several thousand-year old history of the organ. Any number of players from two upwards can perform The Eternal Chord. Hildur Guðnadóttir, Anna von Hausswolff, Maia Urstad, Marcus Davidson, Charles Matthews and others have all played alongside Mike Harding or Claire M Singer, offering various renditions of this majestic piece. / "Mutatis mutandis" means: with the necessary changes having been made or with the respective differences having been considered. Unlike most English terms with Latin parentage, mutatis mutandis (which translates literally as "things having been changed that have to be changed") maintains its Latinate aspect entirely. It doesn't look like an English phrase, which is perhaps why it remains rather uncommon despite having functioned in English since the 16th century. Although the phrase is used in the specialized fields of law, philosophy, & economics when analogous situations are discussed, it appears in other contexts, too, where analogy occurs, as this quote from Henry James' "The American" demonstrates: "Roderick made an admirable bust of her at the beginning of the winter, and a dozen women came rushing to him to be done, mutatis mutandis, in the same style." / Chartier also records under his Pinkcourtesyphone moniker | * | 0:47:06 (Pop-up)

Raz Mesinai (The Bedouin) | Perceptive Dub (1992) | How to Kill a Boombox: Underground Cassette Productions 1989-92 | Raz Mesinai | 2020 | In the ’80s, when he was just 14 years old, NY-based Mesinai began studying percussion with legendary percussionist and Jimi Hendrix collaborator Juma Sultan. Sultan gave Mesinai a Multivox analog tape echo unit, which he would combine with a drum machine and turntable to create his own lo-fidelity recordings on a boombox. This album is a collection of those early recordings. | * | 1:25:28 (Pop-up)
Dry Cleaning | Good Night | Sweet Princess EP | Dry Cleaning | 2020 | South London quartet: vocalist Florence Shaw & longtime friends bassist Lewis Maynard, drummer Nick Buxton, and guitarist Tom Dowse. In late 2017, they recruited Shaw, an artist, university lecturer, and photo researcher, as the group’s singer. Though never a performer, she’d always kept lists-neuroses, daily annoyances, advertising copy—with the idea to one day use them in her drawings. This EP is the result. | * | 1:29:01 (Pop-up)

David Borden | Esty Point, Summer 1978 | Music For Amplified Keyboard Instruments | Spectrum Spools | 2015 | orig released 1981 / While working at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. during the late '60s, composer David Borden met Robert Moog, who was then refining his first commercial voltage-controlled synthesizer, what we would now refer to simply as a Moog. Freshly returned from a stint as a Fulbright student in West Berlin, Borden had an open mind toward new ideas in music but knew very little about synthesizers, which were then fairly bulky and esoteric. According to the composer, this made him an ideal test subject for Moog, who allowed Borden to experiment with his prototypes as a way to proof the designs for regular consumers. Not long after, Borden would found Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company, a keyboard trio that performed works by then-emerging composers like Terry Riley, Robert Ashley, and Steve Reich. Very quickly, the trio evolved into an all-synthesizer ensemble, performing original work using a number instruments provided by Moog. Borden is currently the Director of the Digital Music Program at Cornell University. | 1:49:54 (Pop-up)

I loved Eddie Van Halen’s talent. That interview changed my thoughts on VH not changing the name after they hired Sammy. He wrote all the music so no matter what he recorded it was VanHalen.
