Favoriting October 15, 2020: Strange Electricity
This evening a particular strain of the great blues continuum with STRANGE ELECTRICITY: two hours of blues drones, hypnotic R&B guitars, and electric places and otherwordly modes in between. Guitar inventors, wreckers, eccentrics, and sound makers from Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Junior Kimbrough, and Bukka White to lost heroes like Pinebluff Pete, Early Drane, Julius King, Alabama Watson, and many, many others. Into other worlds!

Matt from New Orleans:

Daniel it’s a damn shame you snubbed one of my favorite actors, Edward G. Robinson. Ginger Rogers should have stuck to Fred Astaire musicals. It was never going to be an amazing film but she almost single-handedly kills it. Phil Karlson has directed some fun noirs and this is probably my least favorite of them due to Ginger.

Looking forward to the electric blues journey

And I dig Vincent. It’s a good short for Halloween month.

Hi Matt! No snubs intended, it's truly random what I grab from my library in the last moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I was just commenting that you didn’t include his name when he was definitely as much a star as the other two

It's just a quick scene, I believe.

"Fixin' To Die Blues" was a big moment when I first heard it via my dad's record collection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Bukka White was the man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm

I played one of Bukka's other tracks recently, it was singularly responsible for the idea for this show.

Edward G. Robinson with Brian Keith and G Rogers, Matt you've tweaked my curiosity, gonna take the film down for viewing.

So Danny, did you get that Third Man Paramount set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Matt from New Orleans:

You talking about the $800 set in the handmade cabinet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Little Danny:

I slogged through the MP3s, WR, culled 'em down to a coupla dozen tracks in total.

Not all of it was interesting, that's for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Little Danny:

@Matt: lemme know if you hear any of that odd digital static this week...

Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

I like "Shake 'em on Down", too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

Oh yes chresti! I don't quite know the musical theory behind, but Bukka White had a really incredible of combining his voice and guitar into all sorts of otherworldly progressions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Little Danny:

This JLH track in particular has been a source of fascination for me for years now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

John Lee Hooker is one of the few people I have seen that actually gave me chills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I hadn’t realized my dad’s copy of The Country Blues of John Lee Hooker was worth so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

Danny, Totally unrelated to the current show, but earlier this week Robert Ashley was played on Sheena stream and i remembered that you live in Marfa TX. Did you see any of the Spanish version of Ashley's Vidas Perfectos that was performed and filmed in Marfa in 2012 or 2014ish?

When I heard on WWOZ that morning that he was doing a show that night, I left work early and stood in line for hours. He was well into his 90s at this point. He could still blow his trumpet. It certainly made its way to Jamaica. New Orleans R&B was huge in Jamaica.

There’s no ska without NOLA R&B
