Welcome all! Happy to celebrate John Lennon's 80th birthday today! Gonna play some old favorites and a few surprises. @Sean, there's a great story to accompany that autograph, which I now believe is not real. But I'' tell it later in the show.

@Irene: That photo is fascinating. Not just the signature but the writing above it - doesn't look like the kind of handwriting that was taught in the UK. Those letterforms - especially the capital 'K' and the lower case 'r' - remind me of handwriting style they use in Germany.

HI Constant Follower, Brian alanr and Gaylord! YETI BOB, I have a story to accompany it. I've speculated that Someone else signed it. Then again, I look at John's signature on the Walls and Bridges cover and they look similar to me. I've shown it to Sean Lennon, whose eye bugged out a bit when he saw it.I But it's a bit of a mystery.

YETI BOB:

To me, the 'n's in "Lennon" on Walls and Bridges look more curvy. Other samples of Lennon's writing are also more curvy/loopy. There's something "spiky" about the writing in the autograph. (Again just my amateur opinion)

@Hubig Pie: I appreciate that recent Beatles scholarship has revealed that many putative all-Lennon songs or all-McCartney songs are a lot more Lennon AND McCartney than previously thought.

  1:39pm
WLSClark:

We rolled the turntable backwards by hand to hear what was backwards back then.
Also, how many of us bought enless boots to get songs like Mary Jane? I sure did. The quality would always be lousy first time and would usually get better and better with each release like they were sitting with masters and just messing them up to keep selling better boots each time.
  1:41pm
Bill D:

What's Your New Mary Jane was on bootlegs for years in the 70s . I think the notes from Anthology say Lennon was really stoned and went back to the studio one night and let loose .

People have been messing around with backwards sounds since Edison invented the phonograph. In 1878, Edison noted that, when played backwards, "the song is still melodious in many cases, and some of the strains are sweet and novel, but altogether different from the song reproduced in the right way"
  1:56pm

It's incredible ! but I still have the original great sounding vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm

  1:59pm
WLSClark:

Back in the 60's we would take Rev 9 and tape it on reel to reel and then twist the tape to play back backwards so it made the speed correct. Better than turning the turntable backwards manually and possibly ruining needles too.

Too young at the time to attend a Beatles concert at Shea. First concert I attended was a Simon and Garfunkel concert at Forest Hills in '69.

It was a week before my 8th bday. Mum and dad took me.

Only Beatles' single I bought was Ballad of John & Yoko, he still had a sense of humour.

This bit of John reading 70s radio ads is so good!

When this album was released, one of the NYC rock stations had a pre-release exclusive, and aired the whole album as a special. I taped it!

Korvettes is where I bought my first Beatles LP, Revolver, at $2.00. I paid all in pennies that I'd saved up!

Irene, I am loving your show. Have you ever seen this? It is my friend Jerry's story.

As a kid he met John Lennon and interviewed him. A long time later, he had an animated film made about the encounter.

Here is the film. It is short and a lot of fun

Pennies well spent, Irene! (trying to find a joke on "declare the pennies on your eyes")

Thanks for helping me celebrate John Lennon's 80th birthday! I'll have to do another one of these in December.

Wonderful show, Irene, and how lovely to end with "Beautiful Boy". Choking up a little here.

BTW, The Joint in the Woods was a real venue. I lived in Morristown, NJ for many years and was happy to have a club nearby. I can't remember who i saw there --I was kind of young to be going to shows then but Renaissance comes to mind. It was a good concert place for a brief while. I think it burned to the ground in the late 70's. Here's someone's remembrance including a poster for that T.Rex show. musiccitymike.net...
