Original version of the song had lyrics... The song was called "Amazin' Man" by John Bird, it came out in 1975. "This album was pulled in Britain in the late 70's because
Idi Amin Dada had a UK journalist slated for execution." - found in some random forum on the Internet

@Yeti -- Yeah, I was in grade school in England in the early 70s, and Idi was big news there, starting when he decided to expel Pakistanis, or something like that. He then went on to "greater and greater" things... I wrote a term paper about him in some writing course...

Brian in UK:

Joe, was it Billy Preston by Miles D?

Ike:

If he put it on a self-titled album, he'd have a so-called "trifecta" that some of the DJs here like.

tim -negent's had some pretty stellar musical moments, despite less-than-stellar socio-political ones!
stranglehold is killer and some of the amboy dukes songs are excellent

All of these People You May Know shows have been great. Inspired programming. This set is amazing.

@Rachel, prosthetic wrinkles and an old WFMU t-shirt should do it.

Rachel Bo Bachel:

Laura it was apparently this one dude! What album is it recorded on?? I gotta play it for him. He’s an FMU fan too, he used to listen to JM in the AM and now he’s a Wake and Bake “glistener”!

Dean:

Will have to explore that live Nugent album. Townes' jokes, right, an acquired taste. Same for some of Leo's.

I remember when Waiting for Columbus came out. I was not impressed. Since then I've seen (or heard) the light. Odd, because not long after Allman Brothers' Fillmore East was issued I heard it c/o a friend's older siblings and I thought it was spectacular right from the get-go.

It's on the Allmans' Live at the Fillmore, IIRC.

Thanks, Joe B! Your "name" special last week was extra special. If you folks missed it, dial it up on the archive!

Yes 'tis.

I recall being in a record store in London, where they played the then recently issued live Michael Stanley Band Stage Pass. First I'd heard of the band. Blew me away.

Allman's at the fillmore must be one of the best live albums of all time. both playing and recording/production.

@Dean I love hearing clinking cocktail glasses in live recordings. In Janis Joplin's Turtle Blues you hear what sounds like a glass hitting the floor and breaking, better still.

Thanks for your great suggestions today, folks. Sorry I couldn't get to all of them.

Great show today Joe. Though the omission of Boney M still hurts...

Rachel Bo Bachel:

Laura ohhh. This guy would yell “play whipping post!” At pretty much all rock shows, regardless of who was performing. So you are right, if it was an actual Allman Bros. show, it very well could have been someone else ;) I’ll play it for him anyway and see if he can tell by the voice!

Whoa! There was a part of this song that I only know from Parliament-Funkadelic! Who got it from who?

Right there, @melinda, is a theme for a show: tracks/albums with extraneous live sounds.

And of course on The Stooges' 'Metallic K.O.' live album you can hear the gentle clink of bowling balls and beer bottles as they hit the guitar strings...

Spirit raising show, Joe! Absolutely adore Santa Sprees....quite a recent discovery for me...wrote a longish review for the PROTEAN NORM blog about the album. Nice to hear Wreckless Eric on Joe Meek, too. Keep doin' what you're doin'
