Hey Andrew! Looking forward to this show

Hey, thanks, Matt!!!

Hello Andrew...sounds like another great show...
Avatar 6:03pm
cometothesunshine:

Hello - thanks, sw 2442
Avatar 6:04pm
cometothesunshine:

I fixed up all of today's singles and the Grapefruit hour is better than I could do fourteen years ago - so much more music is available.
  6:04pm
Lee:

hi Andrew, sounding great, really looking forward to this show!
Avatar 6:05pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Lee - these are some of my favorite records!
Avatar 6:05pm
mce1965:

Great to revisit the classics - and I have donated to the cause. I expect a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone by the end of the program.
Avatar 6:06pm
cometothesunshine:

MCE 1965 - I gave blood to get this show on the air today, my thanks are all that is left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Matt Clarke:

The effort is always appreciated, Andrew
Avatar 6:08pm
mce1965:

That will be quite sufficient, then
Avatar 6:08pm
cometothesunshine:

The singles sounding good - this is a cut above my original recorded in a laundry room edition.
  6:09pm
uptown jen:

So glad we get to revisit these early shows with you. I missed the early episodes the first time around.
Avatar 6:09pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Jen. When I stop complaining about the time it took, I will enjoy it too!
Avatar 6:10pm
cometothesunshine:

Great to pull out these 45's - the core of my collection - to give them fresh plays.
Avatar 6:11pm
cometothesunshine:

Tandyn Almer was some kind of arranger
Avatar 6:12pm
johnyoung1234:

Hey Andrew...great to be here. Technical question--how do you clean up these 45s? Is it software or hardware based? They sound great!
Avatar 6:13pm
cometothesunshine:

Vic Smith - ready to produce the Jam?
Avatar 6:13pm
mce1965:

Not enough room on the label for the Coppersmith
Avatar 6:14pm
cometothesunshine:

JY - I use both. VPI record cleaner, Record Research stylus cleaner, Audio Technica turntable, RX Izotope RX Pro Advanced software - declicking only.
Avatar 6:16pm
cometothesunshine:

Lone 45 by The Devil's Brigade. Sounds like Hal Blaine on drums.
Avatar 6:18pm
mce1965:

For sure... that pattern is owned by HB
Avatar 6:19pm
cometothesunshine:

Ray Pohlman as arranger kinda tells you it was likely Hal. But I have heard Jim Gordon pull off the Hal sound.
Avatar 6:20pm
cometothesunshine:

The Wilder Brothers owned a studio on Santa Monica Blvd. - near the Rhino Store - they did tape transfers. I guess Soft Pop only paid so many bills.
Avatar 6:22pm
cometothesunshine:

Nothing like the wacky stereo sound of CSG
Avatar 6:22pm
mce1965:

Just about to say the same thing
Avatar 6:22pm
johnyoung1234:

I was just conversing with Richie Furay via email last week! He's a nice guy...
Avatar 6:23pm

Ultimate frowny face EQ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Matt Clarke:

Always really liked this Buffalo Springfield song. And love this mix with the xtra stuff
Avatar 6:23pm
cometothesunshine:

It was a real highlight to play guitar behind him a few years back, JY
Avatar 6:23pm
cometothesunshine:

Me too, Matt - not sure why they remixed for the album.
Avatar 6:24pm
johnyoung1234:

I has never heard "Sister Marie" until I bought "Where the Action Is". That box set turned me on to so many great songs. Still one of my favorite box sets ever.
  6:24pm
Jason Brewer:

This is an incredible set Andrew!
Avatar 6:25pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, JY & Jason. I got a lot of ideas for that bix set from these early shows.
Avatar 6:25pm
mce1965:

I shall be listening via mobile for the rest of the show but thank you for the blood sweat & tears in a totally non-David Clayton-Thomas way
Avatar 6:26pm
johnyoung1234:

I was always hoping there would be a "Vol. 2" of "Where the Action Is" since I've heard so many great songs on your shows since then.
Avatar 6:26pm
cometothesunshine:

You are very welcome, MCE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
Candy-O'67:

Tuning in, Andrew!
Avatar 6:26pm
cometothesunshine:

MCE - you were with me when I found the picture sleeve for this 45, I think.
  6:26pm
uptown jen:

“You Are She” is one of my favorite songs of the 60s.
Avatar 6:27pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Candy-O!
  6:27pm
uptown jen:

(Which is to say of all-time, since that’s pretty much all of the music I love)
Avatar 6:27pm
cometothesunshine:

JY - I don't think Rhino will ever do anything remotely like that. They wouldn't even let me be involved in the vinyl cutdown.
Avatar 6:28pm
cometothesunshine:

Jen - this and "Distant Shores"
Avatar 6:28pm
cometothesunshine:

The handclaps!
  6:29pm
uptown jen:

That’s a good ‘un, too!
Avatar 6:31pm
cometothesunshine:

I should have mentioned George Tipton as the arranger of "Sister Marie" - but he is always in my mind.
Avatar 6:33pm
cometothesunshine:

This is a great 45 - Mike Brewer, pre-Toke
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm

Favorite Cyrkle tune

Matt - I seem to recall Tom Dawes telling me this was about the Byrds.
Avatar 6:36pm

Love Tom's sitar playing.

Really? Wow. Need to focus on lyrics again later

Matt - I think they had a negative impression of the Byrds, personally.
Avatar 6:40pm

This is one of the greatest records.

Hi, Andrew! Thanks for reminding me of the marvelously named Vic Coppersmith-Heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
Matt Clarke:

Such a great 'erman chune
Avatar 6:48pm
cometothesunshine:

May great pleasure, Gaylord.
Avatar 6:48pm
cometothesunshine:

I think Orange Peel loves these 'ermits records more than me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Candy-O'67:

Never heard this 'ermits song before. Diggin' it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Gaylord Fields:

I'm sure Mr. O. Peel has some Vic Smith stories to share once he's had a pint or 16.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Candy-O'67:

Hey Gaylord!
Avatar 6:50pm
cometothesunshine:

The Rain have a little bit of a garage Dylan style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Gaylord Fields:

Hiya, Candy-O!
Avatar 6:53pm
cometothesunshine:

Gaylord - starting to think Orange Peel really is crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Gaylord Fields:

Yay, a piece of the Action! My favorite no-hit group of all time! I proudly possess this as their only US Capitol single!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Matt Clarke:

Is Orange Peel still on his curry n chips break?
Avatar 6:54pm
cometothesunshine:

That guy takes a lot of breaks. Beyond laid back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Matt Clarke:

Back to back winners
Avatar 6:55pm
cometothesunshine:

Gaylord - yes I only was able to afford a UK copy a few years ago. Still have my well-worn Crapitol copy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Gaylord Fields:

So the hyperbaric chamber that pumps in nonstop John's Children that Orange Peel always has a lie-down in is not for show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Matt Clarke:

Same for me, re Action, Gaylord!
  6:57pm
aubreycolors:

I like this song "Talkin' About the Good Times".
Sounds like 1967-1968 Pink Floyd during the versus.
  6:57pm
aubreycolors:

*verses
Avatar 6:58pm
cometothesunshine:

Aubrey - this is one of the best two-sided 45's outside of Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields.
Avatar 6:58pm
cometothesunshine:

Produced by Norman Smith, like early Pink Floyd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Gaylord Fields:

Andrew, I saw an original copy of "I'll Keep Holding On" at Disc Union in Tokyo six years ago that was almost but not quite affordable. I'll settle for my Edsel 45, remixed or whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm
Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Matt! I'm just glad the Action found some love while Reg King was still around to appreciate it.
Avatar 7:00pm
cometothesunshine:

Gaylord, I treated my self.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm
Gaylord Fields:

Andrew, I'm kicking myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm
Matt Clarke:

Hi Gaylord! Did you ever see their reunion shows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm
Beantown Doug:

Norman who called himself "Hurricane," and who John Lennon called "Normal" had an interesting, quirky career as a performer.
Avatar 7:02pm
cometothesunshine:

Matt & Gaylord - I saw the Action at the 100 Club, one of the best shows of my entire life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm
Gaylord Fields:

Matt, they happened at the height of my involuntary poverty, or else I would have flown there for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm
Matt Clarke:

Wow Andrew!! That's so great you got to catch that!
  7:03pm
aubreycolors:

I first heard of Grapefruit because an ex-coworker of mine in Texas bought it around 2002, then gave me a copy because he told me I had to hear it. This was way before I had heard of Come to the Sunshine :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm
Candy-O'67:

@Gaylord, I'd love to find that "I Keep Holding On" 45. One of my faves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm
Gaylord Fields:

I envy you, Andrew!
Avatar 7:04pm
cometothesunshine:

It was a lucky break, Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Beantown Doug:

Does Orange Peel have a Grapefruit Peel friend? ;-)
Avatar 7:05pm
cometothesunshine:

I just love this album, Aubrey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Candy-O: I bought the Edsel reissue when it came out 40 years (!) ago, but even that'll set you back about $30.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
Matt Clarke:

Did Terry Melcher produce the entire LP, Andrew?
Avatar 7:07pm
cometothesunshine:

Matt - no, but he did mix the album in LA. It was mixed by the guy who did McCartney's Ram! Some of the 45 mixes are better, so I subbed them in today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
Matt Clarke:

Wow cool!
Avatar 7:09pm
cometothesunshine:

The US 45 of Elevator/Yes - are different mixes than the UK 45
Avatar 7:10pm
cometothesunshine:

Paul McCartney said they were big-headed to issue this as a double A-side. Radio did not play it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Matt Clarke:

Did they Terry Melcher connection come through Derek Taylor? I wonder?
Avatar 7:11pm
cometothesunshine:

No, they wanted to do an Apple publishing deal for the States and thought Melcher was the best person. In return, he produced Grapefruit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Matt Clarke:

Got it. Thanks for the info. Love hearing these mixes.
Avatar 7:12pm
cometothesunshine:

But then they did a lot of self-production without him. And Derek Lawrence produced this, their third 45.
Avatar 7:12pm
cometothesunshine:

John Perry was in Tony Rivers & The Castaways and has that super high voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Gaylord Fields:

My Tony Rivers Alert just went off and led me back here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Matt Clarke:

Ha, Gaylord! I was waiting for your Tony Rivers fan club badge to start blinking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Candy-O'67:

@Gaylord - wow! Yeah, I've noticed a lot of reissues are even expensive now
Avatar 7:15pm
cometothesunshine:

John Lennon had an acetate of this in his collection and Yoko thought he wrote the song, so she copyrighted it in the 1980's.
Avatar 7:16pm
cometothesunshine:

Quite a compliment. Lennon/McCartney apparently sat in on the session as producers with Melcher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Matt Clarke:

Wow. Did that create problems for reissues?
Avatar 7:16pm
cometothesunshine:

He later claimed he produced the Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Matt Clarke:

Terry did? Ha
Avatar 7:17pm
cometothesunshine:

No Matt, the issue was rectified. A journalist even wrote about in Musician as a great undiscovered Lennon song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Gaylord Fields:

Yoko also mistakenly applied for a copyright for "Have You Heard the Word" by the Fut!
Avatar 7:19pm
cometothesunshine:

Gaylord, she was the victim of poor advice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Matt Clarke:

Ha wow never knew that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Matt Clarke:

Just such an amazing song. Absolute favorite
Avatar 7:21pm
cometothesunshine:

George Alexander was truly an amazing songwriter. And then, he totally changed his style.
Avatar 7:21pm
cometothesunshine:

Love Bill Shepherd's arrangement
Avatar 7:22pm
Mailman Tom:

I remember Dear Delilah being played on FM radio back in the day. Great song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Matt Clarke:

Never knew Bill Shepherd did the arrangement! Totally makes sense now
Avatar 7:23pm
cometothesunshine:

This is my favorite Grapefruit track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gaylord Fields:

Has one single family's members been the creative force behind so many different and disparate groups?
Avatar 7:23pm
cometothesunshine:

Matt - their is a big connection between the Bee Gees, Easybeats & Grapefruit=Bill Shepherd.
Avatar 7:24pm
cometothesunshine:

Gaylord, Vanda & Young alone were so many groups.
Avatar 7:24pm
cometothesunshine:

& then they teamed up with "Alex" post Grapefruit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Gaylord Fields:

So true — those guys were not a flash (i)n the pan.
Avatar 7:25pm
cometothesunshine:

I love "Someday Soon" like a big ballad, Whiter Shade Of Pale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Matt Clarke:

Did Grapefruit ever play live in the states?
Avatar 7:26pm
cometothesunshine:

High vocals like Sparks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Phillippe Bastille:

howdy
Avatar 7:26pm
cometothesunshine:

Matt - apparently they did, with their new line-up
Avatar 7:27pm
cometothesunshine:

They made their second album in Los Angeles with Terry.
Avatar 7:27pm
cometothesunshine:

Welcome, Phillippe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Gaylord Fields:

It would be as if the Cowsills started off as three different groups and then later just formed various permutations among themselves.
Avatar 7:29pm
cometothesunshine:

Quite a thought
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Gaylord Fields:

With Barbara being in the AC/DC-type parallel universe group, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Beantown Doug:

As always with music you present that is unfamiliar to me, the more I hear, the more compelling it gets.
Avatar 7:30pm
cometothesunshine:

Thank you, Doug!
Avatar 7:31pm
cometothesunshine:

I love their Grapefruit colored suits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Matt Clarke:

Kind of an Easys flavor to this tune!
Avatar 7:31pm
cometothesunshine:

Very much so, Matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Matt Clarke:

I could totally hear Stevie singing this song
Avatar 7:32pm
cometothesunshine:

George and Alex have some similar songwriting traits.
Avatar 7:32pm
cometothesunshine:

And Alex plays sax on the Easybeats records: Come In, You'll Get Pneumonia and Hound Dog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Matt Clarke:

Definitely gonna scope this release out
Avatar 7:33pm
cometothesunshine:

I wish they had stayed in this style for their second album.
Avatar 7:35pm

It was amazing to finally hear the other songs they recorded in 1968.
  7:37pm

I don’t know which version of “Round Going Round” I prefer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm

I could see why they thought this would be a good single.

I never knew that the US single of Talking About the Good Times had a unique mix!
Avatar 7:39pm

yeah, dave, only found that out this year!

I have wanted to do a full hour of Grapefruit for about ten years. The original show #2 had Grapefruit and the Easybeats. Since I did a three-hour tribute to George Young, I thought I would finally give Alex his hour.

Following this show, you are invited to hear another full hour of songs by Alex Young (George Alexander) & George Young, hosted by Orange Peel.

10 years? What was stopping you? or was it a case that just the stars weren't aligned yet?

Stars and time were not there, Aubrey. I spent like 12 hours on this show, and it was supposed to be maybe four!

So, this song is listed on the back cover of the American Grapefruit album. I had to wait till 2016 to finally hear what they left off. Such a beautiful melody.

Hi Andrew. Love the show and the Grapefruit feature. I'm sure you're aware of the Easybeats, Vanda and Young connection. Have you ever done a feature on them? Some great songwriting and the Easybeats were much more than Friday On My Mind. Lots of offshoot bands and production credits and the great Flash and the Pan!

Also, I have the original Grapefruit lp from 68. I bought it after hearing Dear Delilah. So psychedelic at the time.
