Well, Gaylord, I'm a NYers these days... and I've never met Russ- but any mensch of yours is a mensch of mine.... :) Warren Entner managed a band I worked with called Rage Against The Machine... he's one cool cat too... :)
Every single version of this song (and I own six) is fantastic, and every one is a bit different from the other. I'll play a couple others versions before show's end.
Wonderful interview Gaylord! I’m amazed how humble Mr. Titleman is (and he seems genuinely happy to talk about his early career.) Odd side note: for some reason, something about the way he talks reminds me of WFMU’s own Irwin...

Dean:
Nobody but nobody should be awarded a Nobel Prize. We need to give up this prize stuff.
@phat: That's why Burt fell in love with Dionne Warwick — she could handle those strangely structured songs when others would need those quirks excised.
This interview has been very fascinating and informative! It’s great that Russ is very lucid and articulate.
9:03pm
phat:
@Gaylord Fields we've actually talked about this a bit on here. I totally need to do some more research. I'm going to start formally writing songs soon, again, and I'm getting so many obvious tips that I never knew, lately.
@phat: I wish you creative success. And remember: steal from the best.
9:05pm
Dean:
Franco, I am with you. I remember in fourth grade "winning" an "award" for having read the most books. I approached my teacher, whom I adored, to ask why. I had not read that much that year. She proclaimed that I read more advanced books. I'm not so sure, and I believe that part of my joy with reading is due to my felt need to make it up to my fourth grade teacher.
@Gaylord: I’m definitely listening to this archive tomorrow at work, when I will be uninterrupted. This is a great interview and the music is fab. You ask such good questions.
pretty sure I was introduced to a lot of these songs courtesy of Rhino’s One Kiss Can Lead to Another box set (Sheila B. was involved with that maybe?)
9:15pm
wendy del formaggio:
Yonah Shimmel! We have nothing even approaching a knish here, let alone a decent one.
this is so amazing, Gaylord - and Russ, really, just wow man, life well spent - I am humbled - it's like the defining sound of a whole generation - and it still resonates today ... sigh and faint
@wendy del formaggio: The songs you missed as just as resplendent.
@pgalub: All killer, no filler!
@Spinning Giant: Faint away — Russ is swoon-worthy.
9:17pm
wendy del formaggio:
@Franco: Mmm... I effin’ love Indian food.
Yesterday I made a batch of baked beans using the Joy of Cooking recipe. So good. Today I made school cafeteria-style mac-n-cheese (using Grafton 2-yr cheddar) and turkey soup. I just cook all the damn time. I’m not complaining, though.
Coconut green veggie green curry on wild rice/quinoa (or as my kids call it Keen-Wow!) over here tonight w/ pumpkin pie chaser [rubbing belly] sufficiently suffoncified :D
Coconut curry is great with or without, fill in the blank.
9:23pm
wendy del formaggio:
@Franco: I’ve had my copy for at least 2 decades. It’s one of the old ones—“How to skin a squirrel!”—and between it and Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking School cookbook, I too had a good foundation. Also, the big Cook’s Illustrated cookbook is excellent.
@wendy del formaggio: I'm so glad I got to play it for you.

synchronicity...chance...I was listening early today to a collection called...Growing' Up too Fast:The Girl Group Anthology...today is Chuck Berry's birthday...also an unsung hero...Phillis Wheatley...her birthday as well...please check her life out Gaylord...pretty incredible...beautiful.show...Gaylord Fields Forever...
“Guess I’m Dumb” becomes a huge hit for Glen Campbell and takes his career in a different direction - is this an alternate universe you want to live in? Discuss.
...I really don't want this to end...like really...up til now I thought I was having a pretty decent weekend, all considered...but this is so the olive on top...truly...what can I say, not a big cherry fan ;)
@Wendy and Gaylord, Not sure but my intro to "I Guess I'm Dumb" was a WFMU premium I think from Bob Brainen w quote "Bec song Brian Wilson ever gave away."
9:32pm
wendy del formaggio:
@Gaylord: Me too! Again, thank you for all you do, and all you are.
Gaylord, the tunes and your interview with Mr. Titelman are amazing! i also will be listening again via the archives (hopefully *without* interruptions!)
@mariano -- trying to get stuff done around the apt. here too! not having much luck though :(
@Franco, @wendy -- oh yes, Joy of Cooking! my Mom gave me a copy for a college graduation gift, which i still have (& yup, with "how to skin a squirrel" -- ICK! even way back then!) -- i was torn between being appreciative (b/c i am quite the certified kitchen DISASTER!) and kinda "insulted" -- i was a Sociology/English/Women's Studies major! why would a geek like me need a cookbook?!
@Snayle, @mariano -- have not been by recently, but as far as i know, Sammy's and Yonah Schimmel are both still there :)
my mom's main was "the women's home cookbook". the year i made the xmas cookies some of the recipes were my own drastic variations on recipes from that.
i have many cookbooks, including joy of cooking. i never use any of them. i maybe have never opened joy of cooking.
9:38pm
wendy del formaggio:
There’s so much warmth coming from this interview. Truly lovely.
my housemate's been playing this somewhat soulless new(ish?) version of "the end of the world" so i told him about Skeeter Davis. we'll see if he checks it out.
Thanks for the good time and the good show, Gaylord!
9:46pm
Jett:
I really enjoyed the Titelman interview, outstanding! The guy wrote some outstanding stuff, a lot of records that rank high on my list of favorites. (eg: Cinderellas, Mandolph, Wallis, Cookies, Campbell etc!)
YLT is just what the night needed... add Jersey Grl Lesley and the night can end on a sweet note... Thank You Gaylord for your wonderful interview, this whole show & thank you Fields of People for a wonderful way to wrap up Sunday! Cheers & Thanks!
Thank you Gaylord. Very interesting show on top of the Yellow Brick Road feature on Becky's Bubble Gum show. Insight into pop music purveyors playing with formulas and hooks looking for success and as a side artifact crafting memorable music. Before the conceits of performers expressing themselves, voices of the generation, etc. Blah blah what am I talking about....though the
Russ Titelman and Brian Wilson thread provides a bridge to what will came next in youth music marketing.
Thank you for the excellent radio program.
I see Timothy White did an interview/ article for Billboard around 2015 that Spectropop has on their web site. So looks like the memoir need a publishing deal, then appropriate writer will produce.
