Regarding Northern Soul, resistance is futile. Hello everyone.

Looking forward to this one! I’ve a soft spot for northern soul crooners and such ... Paul Anka “I Can’t Help Loving You”, Boots Randolph “Take A Letter Maria” etc...
@Little Danny: Yeah, hence the confusion. To extrapolate from what MFW said, if template-setting label Motown had for some reason been based in Memphis, it still would be called Northern Soul.
Definitely, Gaylord. And Motown in Memphis is certainly an interesting thought experiment either way. I don't think it would have sounded like the Motown we know, and the Motown that was the template for all the music that got sorted out in the UK as northern soul.
The connection between Motown, and the explosion of Detroit soul labels and artists, AND the local economic impact of the auto industry is fascinating.
It's said that that much of what's good is something trying to be something else and failing. Like genetic mutation. Like all the bands trying to duplicate the Beatles. A lot of Northern Soul sounds like failed recreations of Motown...succeeding by failing.
@UM: Correct! And In my estimation, Northern Soul encompasses some of the best and some of the worst records in the soul genre. To generalize wildly, sometimes it seems that what's more important is style and not substance.
Hey Mr. Fine Wine and all! Loving tonight's show! Also, must be said there is nothing "regular" about any Downtown Soulville show! My favourite story about Northern Soul is that the records made their way to Northern England ports as ballast in freighters. Don't know one way or the other about the veracity of that statement but have always liked the idea.
Area store had this Frank Beverly 45 a number of years ago and I went beyond record budget to procure. Also Eddie Bo ‘From This Day On’ and - a Harvey Scales 45 - a decent day record shopping. (It was not in a 50 cent bin.)
