Regarding Northern Soul, resistance is futile. Hello everyone.

Looking forward to this one! I’ve a soft spot for northern soul crooners and such ... Paul Anka “I Can’t Help Loving You”, Boots Randolph “Take A Letter Maria” etc...

Looking forward to the show. Hi all!

Love how the orange wallpaper turns the Hellraiser jack-o-lanterns into ghost faces.

JtotheK:

Back in August read “The Truth About Northern Soul - Unpacking the Myths” by Stephen Riley, a dude who was on the scene in its infancy.

It seems that if you're name is Otis you automatically have 50/50 shot at making a great record.

Joe R.:

I read Stuart Cosgrove’s Young Soul Rebels book on Northern Soul recently and found it pretty interesting. I liked his Detroit ‘67 book too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Little Danny:

Confusingly the preponderance of northern soul is actually from the northern United States.
  8:22pm
JtotheK:

Oh yeah that Northern Soul movie was ok. I saw it on Netflix, not sure if still available or not...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Little Danny: Yeah, hence the confusion. To extrapolate from what MFW said, if template-setting label Motown had for some reason been based in Memphis, it still would be called Northern Soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Uncle Michael:

The story was thin, basically an excuse to depict the scene, which I'm led to believe the filmmakers did a good job with.
  8:24pm
JtotheK:

And it includes all genres - Dolly Parton “Busy Signal” for example.
Avatar 8:24pm
luca:

the dancing scene of northern soul completely sets it apart from southern soul...very energetic, very positive, sheer fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
ultradamno:

It would have been weird for to be called Motown in Memphis though. People would have been like 'whaaaaa'
  8:26pm
?:

Huh, well it seems my Jack-o'-lanterns didn't pan out to be ghost faces.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Little Danny:

Definitely, Gaylord. And Motown in Memphis is certainly an interesting thought experiment either way. I don't think it would have sounded like the Motown we know, and the Motown that was the template for all the music that got sorted out in the UK as northern soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Uncle Michael:

This song is like a See-Saw. (Hit & Run)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Gaylord Fields:

@ultradamno: "Memphis-Otis-TOWN" works for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Little Danny:

The connection between Motown, and the explosion of Detroit soul labels and artists, AND the local economic impact of the auto industry is fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Uncle Michael:

It's said that that much of what's good is something trying to be something else and failing. Like genetic mutation. Like all the bands trying to duplicate the Beatles. A lot of Northern Soul sounds like failed recreations of Motown...succeeding by failing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Gaylord Fields:

@LD: The migratory patterns of the African-American disapora + Henry Ford's openness to hiring black workers are two of many factors.
Avatar 8:31pm
Hot Fish:

And most of folks making what would later be called "Norther Soul" were from the southern states.
  8:31pm
Krypt PX:

Sorry folks, forgetfulness it's just a sign of old age. Take two: it seems my jack-o'-lanterns didn't pan out to be ghost faces.
Avatar 8:32pm
ChasG:

You could fly first class to Manchester by cashing in the last few records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Gaylord Fields:

I guess you could say Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers were making Northernmost Soul for Motown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Uncle Michael:

It also seems to me that a lot of Northern Soul isn't so great...and gained traction by dint of obscurity. DJ culture being what it can be at times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Uncle Michael:

Tommy Chong's old band, Gaylord?
Avatar 8:33pm
Hot Fish:

I wholeheartedly agree Uncle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Little Danny:

@UM: Same could be said for all collected and/or obsessed-over genres and styles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Gaylord Fields:

@UM: Correct! And In my estimation, Northern Soul encompasses some of the best and some of the worst records in the soul genre. To generalize wildly, sometimes it seems that what's more important is style and not substance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Uncle Michael:

Yes, Danny...agreed. But what distinguishes Northern Soul is that a bonafide youth culture scene came from it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Uncle Michael:

Agreed, Gaylord. Obscurity is what elevated the bad ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Gaylord Fields:

@LD: I don't mean to pick on Northern Soul — I agree that pretty much all collectible genres are often not about the quality.
  8:36pm
JtotheK:

Always enjoy hearing about finds in the 50 cent bins!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

I tend to like the northern soul that's actually, like, SOUL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Uncle Michael:

I also like the ones that are really good soul-based dance records, buy maybe not soul...in the way that a lot of Motown wasn't soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Little Danny:

Definitely. Arguably the first DJ/collector-driven scene anywhere? Though early disco and Jamaican scenes were happening sorta concurrently.
  8:38pm
JtotheK:

Mr Fine Wine did you borrow this Frank Wilson from Jack White???
Avatar 🍷 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm

Hey FW. Appreciate the lesson on Northern Soul. I'd post an old Halloween pic but not allowed. Hope you have a great weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Uncle Michael:

but* maybe not soul
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Little Danny:

Ah, this Willie Hutch is so good.
  8:39pm
JtotheK:

Guess I’m not in the majority on the comments board in enjoying Northern Soul by non-soul artists!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Uncle Michael:

I'd say definitely the first, Danny. In those other examples, the records were contemporaneous to the scene. Northern Soul records were 10 years old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Yes, Jack White NEEDS IT BACK
Avatar 8:41pm
Hot Fish:

What about the Canned Heat dudes breaking copies of blues 78s they found that they already had to drive up the value and obscurity?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Little Danny:

Definitely immediate Four Tops influence on this Maurice Williams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Uncle Michael:

I'd say the best analog I can think of to Northern Soul is the Popcorn scene...which I know even less about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Uncle Michael:

Had not heard that story, Hot Fish. Really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Little Danny:

It is the clearest analog, Uncle Michael. A European-originated dance scene that revolved around obscure American music.
  8:43pm
JtotheK:

Yeah I like popcorn 45s, too! Arb on the jungle stream has some great stuff, and honky Tonk radio girl. I know just a very little about it.

Andres:

Hey Mr. Fine Wine and all! Loving tonight's show! Also, must be said there is nothing "regular" about any Downtown Soulville show! My favourite story about Northern Soul is that the records made their way to Northern England ports as ballast in freighters. Don't know one way or the other about the veracity of that statement but have always liked the idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Uncle Michael:

The four-on-the-floor beat is the connective tissue in all this Northern Soul. Larry Grogan explained that to me.
Avatar 8:44pm

Area store had this Frank Beverly 45 a number of years ago and I went beyond record budget to procure. Also Eddie Bo ‘From This Day On’ and - a Harvey Scales 45 - a decent day record shopping. (It was not in a 50 cent bin.)
