Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

We're back to lockdown over here. Huge blow to artists who were maybe seeing a way to make a living. Government responding in the worst way: bookshops asked to be allowed to open to survive the unfair advantage of Amazon and big retailers, so the sale of books is banned (except from Amazon and select online retailers)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm
coelacanth∅:

your government needs to be exterminated, pest that it is...like ours.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
fred:

@coel: I almost agree, my reluctance comes from the fact that the alternative is neo-nazis. The real deal. Which wouldn't help. The left here is controlled by a Trump-like figure who's even worse in that he's very rich and highly educated yet pretends he can't do grammar because he's poor. Condescending, but it works. We're doomed

fred that's a shame.
they just all need to be destroyed, one regime after another, until the power hungry people (aka politicians) understand that they have to be decent humans as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Dave Sewelson:

Sem and doctor!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
fred:

@coel: that won't ever happen: power hungry people can't be decent. It would take us making it clear that power hungry people have no way to power, which isn't happening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
coelacanth∅:

hey dr.j and Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
coelacanth∅:

i know fred. you know the deal here. ronald whackdonald trump people could and will devolve to be even worse than they are now. the dems *could* evolve, as was happening in the 70s; but if that were to happen it wont be before extreme transformations on this planet; and by then it wont matter at all.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm

@Sem: I still carry around your recommendations from years ago. The way things go, I'm afraid that list will outlive bookstores
  3:55pm
northguineahills:

True coel, but at least he will continue the social policies the Dems have evolved towards. Now, praying for a miracle in the two senate runoffs in GA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Sem:

fred, by that time there'll be a Farenheit 451 underground group, with people who have memorized books and speak them on-demand. Maybe we could circulate the list, get the ball rolling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
coelacanth∅:

Sem i'll do that. what's the shortest book on the list?!
  3:58pm
northguineahills:

I was at the point where I’d be happy w/ any president, GOP or otherwise. It’s going to take a generation to repair the damage, starting w/ international relations, domestic policy, well, you know everything. (My thumbs would give out if I listed everything).

"The Wit and Wisdom of Donald Trump"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm

right ngh -Biden will keep whatever's left of civil and environmental programs. a lot of it has to be started over, which takes a few years again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
coelacanth∅:

Sem i's kidding! i can remember the basic jist of and many details of books but i don't think my brain is designed to remember entire books.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
fred:

@Sem: I was reading the Deptford Trilogy when the second lockdown hit. I didn't like Fifth Business, liked The Manticore, was halfway through World of Wonders, which I didn't like much, but made me appreciate Fifth Business more. I suspect these books should be read more than once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
coelacanth∅:

...though i guess if i had to i might be able to train that brain and remember little books like sidhartha or cat's cradle... or short stories

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Sem:

Yes, fred, about the Robertson Davies books. Much to absorb.

Currently awaiting Volume 5 of Caro's Life of Lyndon Johnson. His election as senator from Texas filled one entire volume pretty much, Book 3, I think, and describes in detail how he stole an election. Nothing out of the ordinary, current US politics demonstrates that.
