Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
@Franco: The hard thing about pre-recording a show the day before is that I have to anticipate my Sunday evening mood, rather than feed off any Saturday energy I may have had yesterday.
Did everybody read the piece in NYT about Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings? Worth a perusal, though the writer reflects a bit too much on him(her?their?my?its?)self.
@Dean: oddly Hassell popped up in my playlist shuffle for the first time in probably 24 months on Friday: I was thusly re-immersed. His "These Times..." from Dream Theory In Malaya.
8:14pm
Mr C:
I'm happy G.
Oh How Happy:Shades of Blue
Oh Happy Day: Edwin Hawkins
Happy: Pharrell
I'm a Happy Man: Jive Five
Just now I'm finishing up a crock pot pork roast with pinto beans, per NYT. The chipotle in adobo is quite hot. I enjoy it, but I'm not sure my family will. More for me?
@Gaylord: I just noticed you named your show in honor of Cori Anika Bush. YES! I'm so so so psyched by her, her win, and what she's going to do once inaugurated. There have been some incredible changes in city councils and state legislatures this time 'round. <3
@Gaylord: Hmm. "Mystery to Me" was playing in the Wendymobile yesterday and today. I know "Second Hand News" is much later FM, but there we are again, being psychic. <3
wonder what they're singing about? sounds like good news! people couldn't make out louie louie either..
9:03pm
highway:
Crystla Bird.Faucet of Penn. becomes the first African-American Woman to be elected to a state legislature...1938...happy birthday to a friend...Roy Wood of Birmingham...I still say he wrote better songs than the Beatles..my opinion...also a happy birthday to Minnie Ripperton...who blew my mind in the day..."Loving You" Gaylord...
I have about $78 in credit at my local record store (well, one of them -- we have two record shops in my town of 12,500 people). I think some of that I need to spend on David Axelrod.
9:18pm
CC:
Oh I see so tonight must be a special show in honor of the president-elect???...:)
9:19pm
The Count:
One !! One !! A-hole out of office !! Hahaahahahahahahahh !!
Gaylord: Lol! "The space between the notes" made me think of a Simpsons episode where Lisa's at a jazz concert and the man sitting next to her doesn't like it. "You have to listen to the notes he's *not* playing" she says. "I could've done that at home," he answers.
@chresti I always have that "do I knock a little out now or get up early tomorrow and do it?" discussion with myself on Sunday nights. I always regret it when I go the get up early route.
More, I'm embarrassed that cool ever mattered, but such is youth.
9:45pm
Dean:
Franco's correct. I never thought about "cool" in high school. I don't think most kids actually do. But being adults we impose this stuff on them. I guess it's our prerogative.
Checking in from a gas station in NJ. Gaylord’s show always helps ya breathe after a busy day. It seems like I spend the majority of the time listening to Gaylord’s show when I’m in the car. I figure by the time the iPhone 15 rolls around, I’ll be able to chat on the comments board through voice activation as I roll up the turnpike.
@Franco: I see now. I attempt to recontextualize the occasional big pop hit I play so it can be heard as just a good or worthy or appropriate song in the context of this show.
Thanks for the music tonight Gaylord! The tape scratching in this Amirtha Kidambi & Lea Bertucci piece is fantastic, and a real delight to hear it in the context of both their voices in this piece, and all the others in this set tonight.
Dean, you too were a discerning music snob in high school, but admit it, sometimes the mainstream stuff could sideswipe you and bring you to your knees if it correlated to a particular moment when you let your guard down.
Thank you, as always, Gaylord! Lots of love to you.
9:55pm
CC:
Dig this one!!!...:)
9:56pm
Dean:
I wasn't a snob. I was learning. I remember a guy in my class who recommended Birds of Fire. Opened up a new world. I was--and remain--a dilettante. Hell, I did homework to medieval dance music in high school. Bring it on.
9:56pm
phat:
Made it through a whole show!
9:56pm
Dean:
But now I'm a snob, yes. That's true.
9:56pm
jonny/manchester:
knew Mike at the time with the Factory association...worked with Joy Division previously...thanks for the note...
