Julie, after you played Drivin' N Cryin' by my request, I idly wondered whether I had missed any DNC releases over the years. Which was quickly followed by "DNC has a website? DNC has a webstore?!" and then a large envelope making its way north. Both T-shirt and beer koozie are Waffle House-themed, so I consider this a win on every front.

I have a suggestion for a bonus hour, I was thinking about Sheila B's special where she played music released by women when they were over 50. It would be interesting to hear something like that with your taste in music! Wouldn't have to be only women, obv whatever you want :)

@4:28 Handy Haversack: Good afternoon Handy, how are you doing? Did you have a proper (well, within COVID-19 restrictions) "Bye Trump" party the past weekend?
Avatar 4:31pm
Honeybear:

In NYC it was easy to celebrate - the whole city (Manhattan anyway) was basically one big party
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Handy Haversack:

I was pretty much confined to quarters, Cha Cha, but Kate was on her way to run a people's theater group in a park when the race was called, and that park turned into a giant party. Very little people's theater was accomplished, but there's always next week.

@julie - the psychology driving his supporters is very deep (primal as it were), from what I understand
Avatar 4:50pm
Honeybear:

"I've been dissed and treated as an outsider for being (midwestern/southern, high-school educated, downsized / underemployed, or even gay/non-white). Then this guy Trump comes along, who's also an 'outsider' of sorts. Therefore, he 'gets' me and feels my pain."
  4:51pm
northguineahills:

@Honeybear: he was drunk and mad that night, but yes, he has no problem w/ the outcome (his twin was much more level-headed). They are socially liberal but fiscally conservative. Outside of an older cousins, I’m the only non-GOPer in the family.

I also went home early on Sat nite (as I do most nites - primarily to limit my virus exposure; also because there's just not that much to do in NYC these days after hours, except the usual outdoor binge-drinking). As things went on, it was kind of like any other night...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
Handy Haversack:

@4:38 Cha Cha: There might be! I get really scarted when I hear people here saying that now things can go back to "normal" or "the way it was" -- since the way it was was surveillance and extractive capitalism run wild and unchecked official violence against people of color. The status quo is evil. Hopefully enough people understand that now the REAL work begins.

(sorry, I try not to get too heavy. Just ... times are heavy.)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Julie:

i agree Handy. This is a step in the right direction but the status quo was crap. (I was called a debbie downer for saying that on Saturday). I'm determined to do whatever work necessary

Dean:

My politics are, for lack of a better word, meta. I remain very, very afraid about the future, maybe more so now that people with competence will be at the helm. I do not invest energy in the symbolic virtues of our leaders. In fact, I am skeptical of leadership per se. Celebrate, sure, but stay wary and highly critical of not the person, but the office.

since you mentioned memories associated to music, I can still remember 11 year old me taping the series "Live at the Beeb" off Finnish radio to rather horrible Fuji tapes and of course the tape ended during this Floyd instrumental, Murderotic Woman, and I quickly had to turn over the tape, furious at missing a segment of the track.., so yes, even at a young age I was a music nerd.

Debbie Downer Cha Cha 2000:

even if our current female-led, slightly more left-wing government is well, a more progressive one and so on, I am just scared what will follow... True Finns (a right-wing populist party) came so close winning instead of social democrats on the last parliament election, so I would not be surprised if they won next time, to be followed by a much worse government.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Julie:

some people think the flip flopping between sides is a good thing, keeping us from going too far to either side but lately lives are on the line
Avatar 5:15pm

It's interesting who divided we all are. Could the internet be blamed? We don't seem to be talking to each other anymore. We seem to be talking at each other.
Avatar 5:15pm
C.S.:

how
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
Julie:

yes and no. I was having face to face massive fights with my older sister before social media really took hold.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
Julie:

I'm sure we've been this divided before. The 60s for one. the civil war for another.
Avatar 5:17pm
C.S.:

And still we survived.
  5:18pm
Dean:

Among the "some people" who so think, the founding fathers, for better or worse. For a good time, read the notes from the constitutional conventions.

We can blame the internet, but I don't think we're all that divided. Division makes for good news. Proscriptions against talk about religion or politics are ancient! I also don't think our federal government is all that divided. There's a ton of bipartisan work getting done, but again, doesn't make the headlines.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
Julie:

and I'm sure there was fake news consumed some other way
Avatar 5:19pm
Sylvia (France-NYC):

before, you would feel quite alone in a room with your racist and sexist family. now, you know they’re the problem, not you. with internet, we can talk with and learn from so many different people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
Debbie Downer Cha Cha 2000:

and also, Finland as a rather small country is hardly the only or the best example of how popular right-wing populism is in Europe.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
Handy Haversack:

Ha, bien dit, Sylvia.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
Julie:

but for them we are the problem! I keep trying to see what they are seeing but I get just far enough to think to myself, you're nuts!
  5:20pm
Dean:

No, fake news emerged only on the day the Web went public. We know this for a fact.

Remember tabloid newspapers in the line at the supermarket?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Julie:

yeah hillary's alien baby would be all grown up now!
Avatar 5:21pm
C.S.:

Well, I have liberal and conservative friends and I do think we are that divided. The hate coming from both sides...the arrogance and sense of superiority. All backed up with sensational Facebook posts meant to inflame passions rather than inform or persuade. And now we are calling for unity? I don't think it will happen.
Avatar 5:22pm
Sylvia (France-NYC):

they’re afraid of anything different. they are unable to look deep down and face their darkness, because it’s scary and uncomfortable.
Avatar 5:23pm
Honeybear:

I do blame the internet for: (1) favoring superficiality / "meme-driven" communication (2) making it easy for people (myself included) to "self-isolate" in a bubble of news sources they prefer / trust (3) an inherent tendency to magnify perceived slights (and outright insults) due to the simple lack of shared physical presence and spontaneity
  5:23pm
Dean:

Unity doesn't happen at the national level. To some extent, that's a feature, not a bug. Unity belongs in the politics that is local. And, per our feminist forerunners, personal.
Avatar 5:24pm
C.S.:

There was plenty of national unity during WW II and just after 9-11. It is possible. Local unity might be harder because different regions often think differently from each other.

Since joining Bandcamp, I have noticed some interesting quirks. The sound quality or volume on a few tracks I have purchased aren't that great. Is it a problem on the site or with the artist?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:33pm

what about like good 80s finnish synth pop is there such a thing?
Avatar 5:34pm

I also hate it when an artist on Bandcamp decides to tweak their song or delete it from existence all together.
Avatar 5:35pm
Sylvia (France-NYC):

@CS when streaming or when listening to the mp3/wav version?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
Julie:

I wish they would all do the "purchase whole discography" thing. There's some artists that just have a bunch of one off singles and you have to buy them all separate. I find that a bit annoying.

@ Julie I noticed many songs from Jenn Vix have vanished off the internet. A shame. Thought they were pretty good.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:41pm

You can still get her CDs but her one-off singles and stuff yeah that's tricky. I'll see what's going on with her, if she put it somewhere else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
Debbie Downer Cha Cha 2000:

also Julie, anyone else, I hate call it "Finnish goth" but the 1983 album Peilitalossa by Musta Paraati - it is a classic, nuff said.
Avatar 5:42pm

@ Sylvia (France-NYC) Probably but if I'm paying money to buy their track rather than steal music, I'd love the best quality version.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
Julie:

Cha Cha, ahh got it!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
Handy Haversack:

Bandcamp has standards for the file type and quality of the uploads -- you can't just toss MP3s on there. So ... I can see variation in volume happening among different artists, but I don't think we're being sold a bill of goods.
Avatar 5:43pm
C.S.:

@ Julie yes, a lot of those singles that she put up for preview have gone. Dark Branches in Rain, You Are Sleep Walking, the original version of Strange Buildings...and many more.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Julie:

i will definitely tell her she will be happy someone noticed!
Avatar 5:45pm
C.S.:

@Handy Haversack It doesn't happen very often but a couple of times the Youtube version of a song will have better sound quality than the Bandcamp version.
Avatar 5:45pm
C.S.:

@ Julie Thanks.
Avatar 5:46pm

Some of her songs would be good soundtrack material.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:47pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
Debbie Downer Cha Cha 2000:

I do hope there are not that many mp3's or other lossy files sold as lossless (wav, flac etc.) - that does happen maybe at some fraudster sites, but I hope the artists check the audio before uploading to bandcamp. That said, I don't mind my regular dose of lo-fi, when intentional of course.
Avatar 5:52pm
C.S.:

Also hate it when an artist will put a track up on Bandcamp but then won't make it available for purchase because it was a demo, previously unreleased, etc.
Avatar 5:53pm
C.S.:

It's like shades of 1984...the track never existed. You never heard it. Stop trying to buy it.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Julie:

if they are with a label that may be a contractual thing
Avatar 5:54pm

Could be. One song in particular featured a totally different singer so I wonder if there was some drama there too.
Avatar 5:57pm

David Vanian from The Damned had a project called the Phantom Chords and their first album which I thought was nice remains unreleased by Polydor as an acetate. A shame when good music is held hostage and in danger of disappearing forever.

I'll share here as I've shared more than once on a WFMU comment board that Patricia Morrison, one-time bass player for SoM and current spouse of Dave Vanian, mentioned upstream, used to drop by the record store where I worked in the late '70s. I, in turn, used to swing by the cosmetics counter at a department store in town where she worked. She was playing at the time with The Bags. Great band, really nice young lady.

@6:40 Dean: haven't heard much Bags but liked them of Decline Of Western Civilization. A pity Patricia was not on any Sisters Of Mercy recordings, even if she was the official bass player. I think there were no gigs either then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:43 Julie: then again the first one is also very different to what they were known for, though obviously without the 80s cheesiness.
  6:46pm
Dean:

Girl punk, yes, inasmuch as Alice and Pat teamed up with Craig and Rob (whose ex-wife I used to ride home with from work on the bus). They were killer.

By ...And Then There Were Three I was wearying of Collins-only Genesis, though I have the double live album they did around this time, and I only ever saw them live without Gabriel. I'm a big Lamb and Selling England fan, but also of the stuff from the beginning. Buddy of mine had a record store whose motto was Selling Records by the Pound.

Patricia did appear with the Damned, though, didn't she?
