A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Handy: Thanks for asking. The situation is not great, I just found out that a friend who I saw last week - who was supposed to be 16 days post-recovery - is now in the hospital with a 103°F fever. I'm still waiting for my test result but I'm feeling very run-down & exhausted and achy.

It's a bit ironic because I've been so careful. I haven't been seeing many people at all, I saw this one old friend to give him a bit of moral support & I might have gotten infected then.

Being careful: last Friday we had a guy come here to clean/inspect our woodstove. He was masked but it still freaked us out a little. We had the windows open and a big circulating fan going. Stayed out of the main part of the house for two hours after he left. Was that the right thing to do? Who knows?!!

@Woods: While I was looking around last night I found this: www.newvelle-records.com... - a Bill Frisell / Skúli Sverrisson collaboration. But it's on this ultra-boutique label and the only way to get it is part of a $400 "season" (box set of 6 LPs). Oh, and it's out of print too... but the one sample you can hear on the website is pretty great.

@Woods: You should listen to the sample track - it's actually a video of Bill and Skúli in the studio, very well-shot. And you can read the liner notes online, which include a great story about how Jim Jarmusch just popped by for lunch during the recording (of course he did!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am
Handy Haversack:

Woods, I found that El Pais article that you linked to a couple of weeks ago to be very clear about accretive risk and what situations are most dangerous. My guess is -- unless you were in there unmasked with him for over an hour, you're OK. Obvs., one takes the most precautions possible! But it seems like ventilation, masks, and limited time are all good measures toward risk limiting.

We had a friend come back to NYC from LA, where he was pretty isolated. It was a real point of contention that he thought once he was back here among his friends, we'd all "cling to our humanity" by hanging out inside at one another's apts. this winter. Kate and I had to make it clear that we don't think that's safe and are willing to hang out outside but that's as far as it goes. It's still almost unreconcilable -- he doesn't see our POV and we think his is just wrong.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am

@Handy @Woods we're struggling with the same issues just with family members. Our oldest son owns a car repair business and auto dealership, so he's meeting people all day long; my youngest has a smoldering romance with a woman who lives with 6 other people (all grad students) and since she doesn't have a car, he's always over there.

YETI BOB:

@HH: My friend who may have infected me has been going through a really rough time and he told me that since he contracted COVID and recovered nobody would see him. I've been careful to the point of paranoia, I've even lost a few friends over differing COVID attitudes. His doctors told him he was clear, so I spent a little time with him (indoors). Now I think that was a mistake, but I thought I was acting out of "humanity".

I'm not into conspiracy theories, but as a college educator the failure of U.S education is very much a feature, not a flaw. Very unfortunate. But, one must remember that mandatory education was meant to get young men ready to die in factories, government offices, or battlefield, and women were educated in so much as a good mother made more good mothers/good soldiers so its all about indoctrination of Nationalism. Now that nation states have lost their purpose in a globalizing world I think you are seeing the backlash and crisis caused by the slow death of 19th century systems. Time will tell though.

I'm a major fan of "Memoirs from Beyond the Grave" by Chateaubriand - one of my favorite memoirs ever. But certain parts of it are probably made-up, like his adventures with Native Americans in the 1780s, so it straddles the line between fiction and non. It's a fantastic book, Chateaubriand is sometimes considered the "father of romanticism" in French literature.

@Mariano - It's worth the trip. Indianapolis can be a crossroads depending on where you're going so it's worth a stop. I'm reading William Burrough's 'Queer' right now. It's the first linear book I've read of his. I forgot how hilarious Burrough's can be.
