I love the Truc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Sem:

N.A.O. has seized my attention!
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: How exactly would you translate "truc"? I know it means "thing" in French, but I suspect it has some extra shade of meaning.
Avatar 12:30pm
Tony Coulter:

Maybe "trifle"?
  12:30pm
Mark Williams:

a N.A.O. to Larry Groce transition is where it's at. Heya Tony and everyone.

Larry Groce -- Jim's Croce's brother by another letter.
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

From here on in, today's show will mostly be spent in Crescentville -- meaning, my basement stash of forgotten LPs.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Yvang:

Truc means thing or stuff. No extra shade except for an emphasis on the lack of precision. In other situations "trucs" means menstruation.
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Aha. Thanks!

Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Howdy! Good thing that cat can't talk about what it sees.

Good thing for the cat's person, yes -- but I wouldn't mind hearing about it.

i agree with Sweet Corn Lizzie (good morning!) and Tony

Mark R:

I remember in high school if you were into King Crimson or ELP or something, some guy would always say, "Hey, man, have you heard GENTLE GIANT?" Such conversations often took place in the woods behind the school while burning a post-lunch bowl.
Avatar 12:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha! Heya, Mark R!
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Too bad my high school didn't have woods behind it....
  12:48pm
Mark R:

My basement stash of vinyl (which means it was cut off around 1990-ish) is an interesting rabbit hole also. Interested in hearing what you were into 20-50 years ago.
Avatar 12:48pm
HollyRT:

Hola, TC and gang!
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Holly!
  12:51pm
Mark R:

Well, substitute whatever cubbyhole or hiding place where you blazed up in your case. We had a driver's ed mini-parking lot where we'd practice driving before we were ready for the streets, and there was a little building there where they'd teach us the rules and show us horrifying films like "Death on the Highway" (actual title), which showed gruesome footage of mangled, bloody dead teenage bodies to scare us straight and traumatize us into being careful, defensive drivers. And THAT building had ample woodage behind it.
  12:54pm
Mark R:

So far, Gentle Giant is the only band on your playlist I've actually heard of. Which is par for the course. I'm enjoying your show immensely. The unifying theme seems to be songs that unabashedly feature several distinct sections to them, a la a SYMPHONY, to which they seem to be aspiring. Less talented musicians would characterize these masterpieces as "pretentious," holding that their mastery of only three chords qualified them as "authentic" rock & roll.
Avatar 12:54pm
Tony Coulter:

Some of my basement records are things I only bought a few years ago -- for a buck or something -- but they went straight into my basement anyway, after just the briefest needle drop. I've been trying to get a handle on it all.
  12:55pm
Mark R:

Even if you bought them yesterday, I'm guessing they have original release dates in the 70s or 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Stanley:

T-T-T-T-Tony!
Avatar 12:57pm

@ Mark R: They do! Glad you're enjoying 'em.

HollyRT:

Ho-lee shit, Art in America! I used to hear this song in high school on one of the local college rock stations, loved it.
Avatar 1:03pm
HollyRT:

never noticed how much this sounds like early-80s Genesis
Avatar 1:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, it's definitely prog-o-delic. Just this one song, though -- not the rest of the album.
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Supposedly, this True West LP was the first rock record to be recorded digitally.
  1:10pm
Mark R:

They used to make a big fucking deal about that: D-D-D! Mostly classical albums did it. Now everybody's like, "It's analog, man, with tube amplifiers. It's BEAUTIFUL. But you have to listen it on a Victrola to really 'get' it."
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

It's the music, not the meat ... I mean, medium.

By the way, most of today's basement LPs are also real cheapies -- they can still easily be gotten for (sometimes well) under $10.

Whereas this New Zealand Trading Company track has a bit of an early Soft Machine sound in parts, imo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm

Definitely glad that you did the basement dig. Shades of your terrestrial FMU shows of yore.
Avatar 1:50pm

True! I am feeling a link to the kind of shows I did years ago. I'm going to keep digging down there, and will give my audio reports from time to time.

Inspiring but not so much that I'll brave my subterranean depths!

Oddly, the vocals here remind me of Tina Meltzer of Serpent Power should-be fame.
