@Tim: I was lucky enough to go to college in the town where Man is the Bastard was from. They put on an entertaining show--stacks of amps w/ homebuilt electronics, drumkit nailed to the stage, full on ear crippling power violence

C In Thailand - But I bet all of these bands were secretely trying to sound like Drive Like Jehu.

Greetings, Creamo, fellow Blasters. Rough start to December so this music fits the mood perfectly. Ordered a fresh journal for 2021; decided to make it a Tarot journal just to shake things up a bit. It came with a free PDF for December of 2020 so I'm breaking in a new deck today that I feel very drawn to...Goetia Tarot in Darkness. I have a lot of work to do on myself, my apartment, and my career and this deck just feels right as far as a self-kick-in-the-ass. www.kickstarter.com...

I picked up an original pressing of Botch’s “Anthology...” for pennies one time...I think someone’s parents were cleaning out the kids old bedroom and didn’t know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

@Jason of Mount Shasta - hahahaha! Oh man, Humorless straight edge and emo bands that sounded like Bryan Adams. Toward the late 90s was definitely when I jumped of the bus.
  4:03pm
jesse in illinois:

oh geez, converge is the best, and earth crisis has always been lame, 'get the kid with sideburns!', f ec. Botch FTW tho!!!
promise ring, way better than earth crisis. and the trouble with victory recs bands is they were always ready to sell out and change sound overnite for the $ and even scene fame lol
  4:03pm
Jason of Mount Shasta:

@tim yeah I bailed in 95. Shit just got soooooo stupid and terrible

Fall tribute band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Threemoons:

And yeah, loving the set and "jockcore" also...OTOH this is desperately making me miss St. Vitus in Brooklyn. Some of their opening sets were full of baseball cap yoiks guzzling beer...when they left and the good stuff started, the crowd switched over to more of a Jack on the rocks crowd and leather jackets...man I miss live music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm

Jock Core? Malignant Growth had a hockey punk following, is that similar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Barney Grubbs:

@Tim: Keith Huckins (guitar & inhaler) was in Rorschach before Deadguy & then went on to Kiss it Goodbye with the singer from Deadguy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
tim from champaign (now washington):

Even when I was heavily into punk and HC I listened to different types of music. When the guitars started sounding the same and the vocals started to beome overwhelmingly whiny and screamy and there were bands that sounded like brown sweatpants to me like Braid, I decided that my Mountain and Ramones records were sounding pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
tim from champaign (now washington):

Thanks Barney!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm

There was a point in '98 when I told my friend Tom I was tired of hardcore and he looked like I broke his heart. He made the best mix tapes. Nearly every band from that second set were on them.

i love this EAT track, very focused and urban sounds
  4:12pm
jesse in illinois:

yeah hxc became a real jungle later 90s, hard to find stuff that wasnt too tough or whiny, i thought it died but these kids keep pumping out good stuff, they keep digging up natural ideas despite not knowing the roots or showings of hxc of the past, esp pre internet

I think it was in Current's liner notes for "Discography" where I read the most emo sentence in my life about playing a basement show with Rorschach and the singer for the opening act said "We are.... 'Beneath the Surface'" before letting an open-E chord ring out.

yep, we all have very distinct boundaries of what we tolerate sometimes. I love me a good converge breakdown but cant stand 99.999% of moshy stuff and never could
yep, evry J&Mc used to devolve into block wide chaos despite their sound really not being all that heavy or harsh...

Sockeye are like if the Residents took on hardcore from the suburbs of the '80s/'90s and before PC stuff....

Basically, Sockeye led to Limp Bizkit, but it's not their fault (I think)...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm

YES to WFMU being the best resource out there to see what those crazy kids are doing across genres...and yeah, never did like mosh pits...for some reason the idea of going out, paying cover, getting drinks, etc in order to get HURT just sounds stupid to me. I mean, the last time I got f'd up was on my WAY to a good gig--literally had a piece of curb crumble under my foot and I fell into a freaking pothole. This was outside of Rubulad in Brooklyn, was going to see The Robert F. Kennedy Assasination--a good friend of mine is the drummer's wife, but I digress.
