6:11am Daybreak & the Hybrid Life:

So the good and the bad of my adventures in going back in the high school yesterday:
only half of the students were supposed to be there, which is how the hybrid life goes.
It turns out only 1/3 to 1/2 of that half actually showed up. Everybody else was virtual.
Many of the staff were also not in and had substitutes.
I wrote a nice, respectful email to my building principal asking, since all of this is true, what is it about this particular week that is so high risk, that makes it necessary for have us to be in building?
The response:
“Let’s chat about your concerns tomorrow.”
So I invited him to come up to my bathroom duty so we can chat about it...
In the physical building once again today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11am steveo:

oh dang, just missed. good morning everyone :)
Avatar 6:12am HyperDose:

Chilly and dark here in Maplewood. Our King's store is closing. Everything 50% off starting today. Good opportunity to stock up on essentials.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13am Michael in Montclair:

Good morning TOPT, skeleton crew, and everyone.
Avatar 6:14am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@HyperDose: I guess you will have to go to the King's in Summit in the future. There is a really good deli just down the road from it.
Avatar 6:15am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Daybreak & The Hybrid Life: Ugh! Be careful...

Thanks for being a hero this week Todd.
Avatar 6:16am HyperDose:

I lived in Summit briefly in summer '07. Miss Scotti's Record Shop (grew up at the Gillette location). As for groceries I've been using Peapod for almost a year. Excellent service.
Avatar 6:16am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Daybreak & the Hybrid Life: You are the hero, my man.
  6:16am Peter from Dover NJ:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17am steveo:

bloomfield, maplewood, montclair... I'm up early for a trip to essex county myself-- i'm about to head to verona to finish hiking the lenape trail (too cold to wear an fmu t-shirt, though)

if i'm lucky, I'll be able to spot the transmitter in east orange :)
  6:18am The Butterman:

Daybreak, I’m sure that chat will result in the school getting shutdown! Uggg, what a pointless waste of time. All risk with no reward and quality of instruction goes down the turlit ( properly guarded by your top position as a bathroom monitor)
Avatar 6:18am Motobro:

Always one of my favs, this here Soft Boys tune.
Avatar 6:18am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@HyperDose: How long was that Scotti's open for? I vaguely remember it. The one in Madison was open for quite awhile I believe. Peapod is Stop'n'Shop's delivery service?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19am Doug in JC:

Good morning? Am I back on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19am fionnland:

This song is a stone cold classic.
  6:19am jn34282:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20am Doug in JC:

There we are! I was posting on my phone and the page said I had to "contact WFMU staff"
  6:20am Peter from Dover NJ:

Daybreak & the Hybrid, be careful. In The Child's school, 11 ppl tested positive for 'rona last month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20am Doug in JC:

Anyone remember CD Express in Denville & Madison?
Avatar 6:20am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@jn34282: Yes, Scotti's in Summit is still open, I'm referring to the Gillette location that @HyperDose referenced.
  6:21am Peter from Dover NJ:

Scotti's in Summit is still open. I work 2 blocks away.
Avatar 6:21am Hoboken Jack:

Bit of a T.Rex groove to the Shakes' tune and I like it!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24am steveo:

thanks, motobro... i'm hoping to glimpse it from eagle rock (or maybe somewhere else :)

i'll be on foot, so no parking for me haha
Avatar 6:26am HyperDose:

@Todd I lived in Long Hill until '09. Scotti's in Gillette had a 25yr run until 2011. I guess Summit is the only location left. Owner was so nice, even special ordered sticks and strings for me. And yes Peapod is Stop & Shop.
  6:26am jesszzz:

Morning Mr. Ophonic, morning all! This sounds utterly gorgeous. Thanks for the tunes.
  6:26am kpx:

I remember Scotty's in summit, and there used to be one in Morristown. that's the one that's closed. so maybe that's the one you were thinking of if you've ever been there, that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26am Squints:

TOPT of the morning, Glisteners.
  6:27am Will:

Say, wasn't this song on the first Mott the Hoople record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28am steveo:

@doug i'm working from www.nynjtc.org...

i also have the avenza app from the nynjtc on my phone, which works really well using gps

(i see that the transmitter is indeed in west orange, i wonder why the station id lies)
Avatar 6:28am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Will: Correct! It was brought to the band by Guy Stevens.
  6:29am The Butterman:

Seeing that transmitter was almost a religious experience. I believe I saw it from my moms window while she lay dying at Kessler. I painted Godzilla destroying the transmitter with his icy, blue breath in my painting for Wake n Bake art auction!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30am Ike_p:

jn34282, The Child chose to attend Morris Knolls Regional 100% remote, thank goodness. I'm an old CHS alum frkm when the bldg in Main St was the high school. Don't understand why more schos aren't 100% remote.
Avatar 6:33am Motobro:

Steven, won’t see it from Eagle Rock as its on the same ridge south of you. From the west mtn trails in Verona (old Essex Cty insane asylum area) you could see it.
Either way nice day for a hike and you’ll have exceptional view of the cities. Enjoy!
6:34am Daybreak & the Hybrid Life:

Ha!
Thanks Butterman! Thanks Peter from Dover!
In the Covid times I makes sure only one person at a time goes in each bathroom which usually hold 5.
The rest wait in a 6 foot spread out line.
I like a public place for my “chats”, even when the building principle is a decent sort.
  6:34am Sean Kershaw:

Yassss! Only the best most overlooked T Rex track.
  6:34am Miles of Middle Texas:

Lovin it Todd. Morin y'all
  6:35am jn34282:

@Peter starting to think that too, were you ou there when the soccer team was great?
6:35am Daybreak & the Hybrid Life:

Peter from Dover,I heard Dover has the same area levels we do, as I’m just down the road at Knolls, but Dover is virtual while Knolls decided it was vital to come in the week after Thanksgiving.

Daybreak, we live in Dover and The Child is an out of district student. Dover one of the highest covid rates in Morris County. From what MacNaughton has written, all the Knolls cases were from outside events, but there are schools where it's been transmitted in school. Unbelievable.
  6:49am kpx:

@PeterFD: you wouldn't happen to take the train to and from summit by chance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49am Doug in JC:

@Daybreak I always liked Mr. Powers .. I seem to remember the art teacher marrying a guy from Ween?
  6:49am annette:

a snowy good morn from pennsylvania
Avatar 6:49am Motobro:

@Steveo, the id says East Orange because FMU was originally chartered by and located at Upsala College, whence it existed it was located in East Orange. However I believe the transmitter and antenna were always located up on the first mountain in West Orange or Waste Orange as we would call it growing up there and getting wasted... only once -n- awhile of course.
That is a pretty darn good map you’re working with. Good luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50am Peter from Dover NJ:

jn34282, when I was there, the soccer team was great and the school managed to get a foreign exchange student each year that just happened to be an ace soccer player. And the football team was, uh, not great.

I do not see the benefit or continuity of jumping from face to face, virtual, hybrid learning from week to week or day to day. Academic hopscotch sounds nauseating. At least the county college where I labor declared most classes remote this semester and I expect, in the summer. Fall remains unknown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12am Peter from Dover NJ:

Tom from Stirling Erie Marijuana, LOL. I remember those 19th century train cars with the cane seats.
  7:12am TC:

Great track!
Avatar 7:14am Deborah:

The WFMU transmitter, way back in the days of the Old Yellow and early subsequent moves, was sacred. We would drive by and stare and a couple times we visited. Repressive managers threats "to turn the transmitter off" never manifested but it loomed. We were right next to the ghastly, overpowering WFME, that scary right wing religious station at 94.7.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14am p/b:

@Daybreak: you said just down the street from Knolls, is that just before the intersection of 46 and Franklin. or somewhere between 46 and Maine. I used to hoof it many of time up and down Franklin going to and from Knolls, just because I missed the bus a lot, and because I used to cut class is a lot.

It bled into WFMU, of course, and other frequencies. I used to marvel how such a powerful frequency could be devoted to the cult dribble that poured out of there. Not much of an FM listener these days unless it is WFMU or WQXR (sorry) or WBGO, at times, when they are not too self righteous.

@PR1920: Consider the Mills Brothers. They were massively popular in their day, crossed the Atlantic by ship to perform for the Queen of England. And now most people have no idea who they were.
