There is one very tiny upside to The Hollies not finding the place in the Chart Market between Pop hysterix & Rawk rebels that should have made them in the small handful of The Beatles' chief Creative & Commercial challengers
- & that is that there are so many astonishing trax like these that I have had no idea about yet !!!

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Gaylord Fields:

@jn34282: Perhaps so, but it's only the same dozen or so Beatles songs that have gotten overexposed. I'd like to think it's just that the high quality of the Hollies' output speaks for itself, irrespective of other acts' relative popularity.
Avatar 3:20pm
Nutley Sam:

No comprehensive Hollies box, correct? With mono UK LPs EPs and singles. Hollies and Herman's Hermits deserve the deluxe treatment. HH have a Bear Family box with dubious sound quality.

Reminded of Lennon quipping that smashing instruments was not something Townshend invented in Art School - it's what Musicians do when an Instrument has gone crap or whatever. Jerry Lee set his piano on fire - chopped it with hatchets...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm

Ron Richards' strengths as a producer was in getting that great sound you hear on Hollies records. His weakness was in some of his curious song choices and decisions (i.e., the A&R part of the job).

@Nutley Sam: I've been reading up on Ron Richards, which shouldn't surprise you. He started out as Geo. Martin's assistant. One of the curious choices was assigning "Lullaby to Tim" — Graham's very personal song about his son — to Allan to sing, and then making them all Leslie'd up. Also, he didn't encourage more L. Ransford songwriting, with his relegating their own songs to B-sides.

again I think "Long Dark Road" retains its power because it is not heard all that often. Either way it is a great song, but it helps maintain maximum impact that way.

@DD: Yep, that's Tony. And I like his lead vocals on the derided-by-some "Pegasus" — so ingenuous and fragile.

"Man with No Expression" is the same song as "No Expression" which was written and recorded by Terry Reid on his first record, released in US as BANG BANG YOU'RE TERRY REID.

@Will: One time I was trying to get Terry Reid on stage and he was looking at a mirror and primping. I said, "You look great, don't ever change." He started cackling hysterically and said, "That's what Ronnie Woods told me!" (yes, he included the "s").

Great story Todd. My Terry Reid story: in 1969 I bought a ticket to the triple bill of John Mayall/Terry Reid/Taste in Washington DC, psyched for the Reid and Taste sets. When we arrived, there as no mention whatsoever of Taste, and Terry Reid was announced as "sick, could not make it." So we were stuck with two full hours of harmonica playing by Mayall and band from his TURNING POINT period; long way from what I wanted to see.
