What a great tribute show. I think we've all got memories of a record seller or flea market vendor like that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Little Danny:

Becky would know best but Chicago's didn't compare, at least in my experience. Detroit's greater auto industry seemed to draw all the Appalachian (and Ohio) cats, a cottage country "scene" develops, more country musicians are drawn to the city in turn, ad infinitum. It didn't hurt that Detroit (rather than, say, a Cleveland or a Pittsburgh) had a vibrant local recording infrastructure (studios, spaces, DJs, good economy, promoters, like-minded musicians, etc.) that existed already by World War II.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Excellent points, Danny. Handy, isn't "I met a guy in Muskegon" itself the first line of a country song??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Becky:

One of my all-time favorite records - this live Chicago recording of the Sundowners, a local honky tonk act: www.bloodshotrecords.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm

And Toronto and Montreal had strong country scenes, for sure.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm

It's a whole subgenre, Mr. FW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm

Tons of folks from Kentucky were in southeast Michigan in the car industry. I lived down the street from some as a kid, circa 1970. Locals even jokingly called Ypsilanti "Ypsitucky."

Becky and I were on the recommissioned Boblo boat for Gino Washington's birthday party.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm

Yeah, US 41 and then I-75 were direct corridors from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia.

@Handy: Yep, a family down the street from me was in a bad car accident on I-75 around 1970, coming home from visiting relatives back in Kentucky.

Christo:

Hey Becky! That was cool! This is country music
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Handy Haversack:

Sorry, US 23. (It and 41 sort of trade places by Atlanta.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Little Danny:

Funny, all that Detroit lacked in terms of being a real national country industry powerhouse were the labels. Which were all in still Nashville (and all the major Southern and Texan cities) and Los Angeles in the '50s and '60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Mr. Fine Wine: Did Gino actually show up?

Thanks Christo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

I'm blanking on the name of Motown's country subsidiary.
  8:34pm
Andres:

I was thinking Windsor, Ontario must have had a strong country music scene, with its proximity to the Detroit scene and the rural counties surrounding it. I guess Shania Twain's birth there is the proof.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:35pm

Moedown? Hoetown? These can't be right, Little Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm

  8:36pm
BH:

Although Windsor, Ontario is South Detroit, so.. it makes sense for country to be big there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Little Danny:

Mel-o-dy! Thanks UD.

Some good hardcore honky-tonk 45s on that label, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm

I think because it was run by Mel O. Dyson.

I just made that up. Talking out of my ass again, I can't stop.

Still better than my made-up guesses, ultradamno.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Little Danny:

I heard about the 78 burial, too! Heard that on different occasions from Bob Mays enthusiast Pete Wilgus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Those lost 78s! I'm tearing up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Becky:

Gaylord: Gino showed, but refused to sing all night (despite it being HIS birthday and a whole band being assembled and ready to accompany him), until after midnight when the boat pulled back into the dock. Then he sang 2 songs and RAN off the boat.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Handy Haversack:

Let's get shovels and meet in Detroit!

(OK for a song opener, Mr. FW?)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Gino was a big tease that night but it was still fun. A "white party"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Becky @MFW: That is so bizarre, but that level of cowardice is certainly on brand for Gino.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Ha. Okay, here's what I know of the 78 burial: Bob had a green thumb and had some pots he wanted to plant seedlings in but needed potting soil. He decided he'd use the rich, black Hazel Park dirt in his backyard. But that would leave unsightly holes! He also had a few hundred copies of undesirable local 78, Briant Holland's "(Where't the Joy) In Nature Boy"/"Shock" on the Kudo label, taking up a lot of space. So he decided to fill the holes with 78s and top them off. Years went by, maybe decades. Grass grew over the 78s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Gaylord Fields:

It just occurred to me that between Emanuel Lasky and Nathaniel Mayer, Detroit certainly had its share of Black singers with Jewish-sounding names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
ultradamno:

This is like a customer feedback card set to music.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Then inquiries started coming in. Wants lists. People were after the 78. He tried to dig them up and kept not finding them. Eventually he found (some of? most of? all of?) them, but the labels were all corroded completely off. A helpful customer made exact replica labels that he glued on to the unburied 78s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
ultradamno:

...OK, a warmer than usual one, but still.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Gaylord: Yes! Also, Detroit store-front soul food restaurants all feature corned beef!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Becky:

My debut funk instrumental 45 is going to be Asian Corned Beef b/w Boogaloo Sandwich after iconic Detroit delicacies. (Asian Corned Beef is Black-owned and serves corned beef-stuffed egg rolls, of course).
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Sorry I made you run in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
ultradamno:

Well, I never knew how much I wanted corned beef eggrolls before today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Gaylord Fields:

That story just goes to show you that one more limitation of digital media is you can't do absolutely boneheaded things with an mp3 file that make for great anecdotes. RIP, Bob Mays, and heartfelt sympathies, Becky and MFW.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Handy Haversack:

Math checks out, Becky.

And thanks for a great show! So good to be in Michigan through the music for a night. This was the first year since I was in high school that I didn't get out there to visit my aunt and my uncle. I miss it and them super hard. This was great. Many, many thanks.
