Tony Coulter:

Hello, all! Today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes is really obscure, so I'll just ID it right off the bat (you can pretend you would have known it). Anyway, it's a s/t 1983 LP by the Noh Buddies: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
spodiodi:

greetings, Tony Coulter and Coulterites!
i've always been a sucker for mystery
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
listener james from westwood:

Happy last-Tape-Hiss-of-2020, Tony and all! Happy to be enjoying this one sans work today and with doughnuts & coffee!
Avatar 12:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, hey, spodi & james!

Hello, Tony, the 'spodi', and ljfw.
I, too, love a mhisstery.

I don't have donuts and coffee, but I do have ironwort -- my new favorite tea.
Avatar 12:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
spodiodi:

hi james and S'em!
ironwort? never heard of it... investigating. preliminary attempt to determine mystery album has proven fruitless
Avatar 12:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Ironwort, aka mountain tea and shepherd's tea.

greetings Tony and hiss connoisseurs

Greets, coel!

i'm reading all about it. i've taken st john's wort before. otherwise i'm wort-ignorant.
hi coel!

I would have swear it was the X from "Drums and Wires" from this other obscure band from England.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Yvang:

Hi Tony and listeners! Now I am gonna lhissten silently and religiously.
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

This Etat Brut tape certainly provides your daily dose of hiss. The volume level of the music is very low, so I have to crank it *way* up -- hence, the hiss quotient is expanded.
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Yvang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
spodiodi:

this *is* rather hissy
hi Yvang!

Oh, by the way, the Belgian release of this cassette is called "Acier" (as in the French word for steel).

And ... the Etat Brut cassette is the blue one on your left.

Have not had ironwort tea before, unless it was one of many ingredients in a blend herbal tea. Will look to give a try.
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, WR! It's a very primitive looking tea. It looks like someone just uprooted a bush, tore it into a few pieces, and tossed it into a bag.

WR:

Jame's comment about donut & tea nudging me to eat the coconut chocolate pastry in the fridge with my 2nd cup of chai this morning.
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

I said (on mic) that I didn't know the identities of Etat Brut's members. Here's what discogs has to say: "Members are (said to be) 2 science teachers, both called Philippe."

Hi spodiodi, like your avatar. Stealing to use for a day when I just want to blend in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm

thanks, and steal away, WR! i snagged it from the wfmu user profile page background, and then stretched it into a square (like me). i was at a loss (and maybe going a bit for the blend-in thing as well)

I chimed in at the end of Matt's show that he should feed his stomach something better than donuts and cookies. People in glass houses...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm

...that's a new one on me
Avatar 12:37pm
Tony Coulter:

@ ynod: I did, for the first couple of years after I moved to Portland -- but I've kicked the habit. Not to shock anyone here with my puritanicalness, but ... I'm off sugar these days. (Though I did indulge in bread pudding a few times this Christmas season.)
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Guess it's a bit late to be mentioning this, but: today's Tape Hiss will be focused on industrial music of various stripes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
coelacanth∅:

Tony congratulations on your abstinence from refined sugar. it's not puritanical, it's actually reasonable, as opposed to how most people eat.
i'm actually as bad as ever with the sugar. i eat 2-3 chocolates almost every day and way too much honey in my tea.
it's probably killing me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
coelacanth∅:

ynod what's a voodoo doughnut?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
coelacanth∅:

...("donut")
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
ynod:

Local Portland-based donut chain. Nothing supernatural. Nothing natural at all, really!
Avatar 1:06pm
Tony Coulter:

@ coel: Voodoo Donuts is a chain here in Portland. The owner ran for mayor, and they even have their own record label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
spodiodi:

i've seen voodoo donuts on some (waste-of-time) tv program a while back, though have never been there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
coelacanth∅:

ah, Thanks ynod. are they better than what dunkin' donuts has become?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
coelacanth∅:

...and Tony
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
spodiodi:

i got the impression they cost way more than dunkin donuts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
coelacanth∅:

well, if they're edible maybe they're worth it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
spodiodi:

(like, for the $8 avocado toast and $50 burger crowd)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
spodiodi:

and dunkin donuts doesn't have toppings like bacon (and candy bars?)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm

@coel~ Haven't eaten any at all in quite a while, but last time I checked, Dunkie's is a pale shadow of my childhood donut memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
coelacanth∅:

a few months ago my sister and i lamented that her kids will never know how wonderful dunkin' donuts once was.
- long time gone. now.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
ynod:

I can't believe I ever enjoyed their coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
spodiodi:

i haven't had a dunkin donut either, in many years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
coelacanth∅:

i think their coffee was weak (at best) by the time i first tried it, decades ago; but when i was a child the doughnuts were made on premises every morning and they had... 35?... 40? different ones to choose from - none bad.
Avatar 1:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Voodoo Donuts certainly has more indie cred/cachet than Dunkin' Donuts: They've released music by Poison Idea and Dead Moon. www.voodoodoughnutrecordings.com
Avatar 1:12pm
Tony Coulter:

(Which I find comical.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:13pm

In stark contrast to all this donut-talk, I've been summoned downstairs to enjoy a vegan "beetloaf" for lunch. I'll be back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm

Mark Williams:

My early years were spent in Europe. My mother is from there and my whole life has been a mix of one foot in one culture, one foot in another. But the context provided of being from somewhere else, and having a mother who recognized much about the U.S. that was dysfunctional, gave me an early perspective about, say, diet in the US. The sugar issue alone is so plainly clear for me, but I'm always semi-surprised still to run into intelligent, discerning Americans who cannot outrun their upbringing, as it were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm

(spodi @114 so would "Alobar" from jitterbug perfume)

My dentist once commented to me that if sugar was a recent invention, it would be illegal.
Avatar 1:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Processed sugar, I mean. I guess it's been grandfathered in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
spodiodi:

i haven't read that, coel. i should put it on the list of books i should read
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
coelacanth∅:

Mark i don't know if the intelligent part applies here, but i do know how profoundly what i consume affects my health. and i'm a "health nut" by american standards.
i'm slightly ashamed of my dietary habits.
Avatar 1:23pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm practically a health nazi.
  1:24pm
Mark Williams:

@coelacantO - i didn't mean to suggest a glaring irony in writing "intelligent people," so I apologize if it came across that way. I guess it was me observing that how one grows up just hugely dominates everything that comes after that. Comfort food, cravings, associations... all of it. And we can't forget portion control. Hey Tony - what about some Portion Control!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
spodiodi:

discovered this analogy recently, and can't stop thinking about it " Think of your body like a sugar bowl. If you eat lots of sugar and glucose, the bowl fills up. If you eat more glucose, then it overflows and spills into the blood." www.dietdoctor.com... “Can you get type 2 diabetes again once you’ve reversed it?” by Dr. Jason Fung
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
coelacanth∅:

Tony that's a brilliant observation!
i wonder how pasteurized, homogenized, hormone and drug laden cow milk would fair, legally, without the supremely powerful milk lobby and advertising lies...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm

All of a sudden more time on your hands? I've only recently been reading Gravity's Rainbow, which was a late 60s post modern super hit. I've come unstuck in time myself, it seems.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

My reading habits have been really weird since the pandemic began. I'm mostly only reading mysteries, because they relax me -- and most of them have been by either Donald E. Westlake (aka Richard Stark) or Margaret Millar. I think by now I've read around 30 Westlake books.

This just in from the BBC: "Cassette tape sales are estimated to have doubled this year compared to 2019.

The British Phonographic Industry, which represents record labels, projects 157,000 tapes will have been sold in the UK in 2020."
Avatar 2:00pm
Tony Coulter:

Originally, so many artists released music on cassette only because it was the cheapest way to do it. These days I suspect there's a bit of media fetishizing going on when artists/labels opt for cassette -- though, of course, cassette releases are still much cheaper (and faster) to do than vinyl or CDs (but maybe not than CD-Rs?)

Tony @2.00 if you're doing it at home it's many times less expensive to make a cd release than a cassette. for many years now.
cds are ~30¢ each for the best quality ones, cassettes are several dollars each for decent ones. cd/paper printer, $100.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
coelacanth∅:

ynod no that's just the printer.
...i didn't even think about quantity reproduction, since i've never had to. i duplicate 1 cd at a time.
a cd burner that duplicates 4-5(?) cds at a time was around $350 a year or 2 ago, if i remember correctly. supposedly a decent one.
... but if you're duplicating cassettes at home, how many can you produce at a time? in my case, 1.
