Speaking of ritual, the LP behind the cassettes is easy to find...www.discogs.com...
Avatar 12:12pm
Tony Coulter:

You got it, Yvang! It's The Corporation's "Get On Our Swing" LP.

I guess the catalog number gave it away....

I think he's reading from Aleister Crowley on this track....
Avatar 12:27pm
Tony Coulter:

(and that was probably Crowley's voice at the end of the other side.)

Yvang:

By the way RIP Lou Ottens without whom this show would not exist www.rollingstone.com...
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes. Was interested to learn that cassettes were invented in Belgium (though Ottens was Dutch).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm

Was glad to see lots of love for mixtapes over the past few days since his passing.

Philips started as a dutch company. Now with all the acquisitions and fusions I don't know.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Yvang:

I guess Rosa + Croce refers to The Rosicrucian Order. The french painter from the 60's Yves Klein was deeply involved in this cult.
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, I think you're right, the title must be referring to Rosicrucianism -- though the text seems to be drawing more on Crowley (not that I'm any expert on these things).
Avatar 12:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Don't tell anyone, but I think we might have heard the sides of the Thelema tape in reverse order. The cover doesn't list any track titles, so I was reading off of discogs -- and they weren't matching up with what I was hearing. So either the labels are reversed on my copy of the cassette, or whoever put the tracks up on discogs got it wrong. Just one of the mysteries of life, I guess.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

so we think the referenced Annie Wilkes is the Stephen King nurse?

I've never actually read a word of Stephen King. Should I think of changing that?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
David (in London):

Coela, early evening will do nicely.

Tony, as a man who had managed to reach his fifties without ever having read Stephen King, I asked myself that same question a couple of years ago and then read The Stand and Salem's Lot. I was pleasantly surprised.

i'm sure i'd give King another try if someone who liked authors i like gave me a specific recommendation.

The closest I've gotten to experiencing Stephen King is seeing the Larry Cohen movie "A Return to Salem's Lot," which stars Samuel Fuller.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
David (in London):

Aged 12, my life was changed by seeing Tobe Hooper's 1980 version of Salem's Lot, so that was an impetus to finally read the bloomin' novel.

coelacanth∅:

there were 2 regulars at the pub who'd often read at the bar. i was one, Mike (rip) was another. Mike especially liked Stephen King and John Grisham.
a John Grisham book fell in my lap first and turned out to be one of a few books i got well-into then decided i'm wasting time, reading something not enjoyable.
i forget which King novel i read a page of but his style didn't compel me, so -unfairly or not, i cast him into the same dungeon as Grisham.
Avatar 1:32pm
Tony Coulter:

My reading habits have been profoundly changed by the little free libraries all over Portland. I've read all sorts of stuff I never would have sought out -- including John Grisham, whose appeal faded pretty quickly for me.
Avatar 1:35pm

This tape comes with a huge newspaper-sized booklet.

Les Calamités! even though I love them, it's surprising to find them on this compilation.

They were the french GO-Go's

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
David (in London):

Apparently Finish the Story were part of 'The Evesham Scene'. That must have been an even more niche scene than 'The High Wycombe Scene' of which I was a part. Blimey. The 80s was a great time for music in the small towns of England. F.T.S. did support The Cure at Hammersmith Odeon, though.
Avatar 2:49pm
Tony Coulter:

I *think* This Window is basically the more experimental version of Finish the Story (it's mostly the same people). This Window probably didn't open for the Cure.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
