Hey Stanley, Sylvia and Brian! That guy in the photo may be wincing at the volume. The picture was taken at a memorial for Lou Reed at The Cathedral of St. John the Diving in Manhattan. Lou's guitar tech set them all on high feedback level. If you click on the link, you'll actually find a few videos of the event and hear what it was like, cut down in level by my phone's limiting. The sound was glorious!

Gerry from Miami:

@prguitar. Much is made of this skill known as "perfect pitch." A bit overdone, I'd say. You don't have to have "it" to be a good musician. Lou Reed might have been able to "recognize" any note when played, but he certainly wasn't so hot at producing tonally perfect melodies with his voice. His mixture of a limited singing range and often "talky" presentation are what made him oddly appealing to many, including me. Long live the spirit of Lou!

@Gerry from Miami.. I agree completely! You really have covered it all! I used to work at Rudy's Music in NYC, building Rudy's Pensa Custom guitars. Prior to my time there, many of Lou's guitars were custom made in the store's repair shop. Lou's guitar techs, (there were quite a few over the years), and occasionally Lou himself would come in to pick up instruments left for set-ups or other custom work.. There is a story that one of my colleagues used to enjoy telling about a guitar he set up for Lou.. There was a rumor circulating that Lou had perfect pitch! Whether or not one is a fan of the VU or Lou's solo work, this sounded a little odd! My colleague was always a bit mischievous, so after hearing from our head luthier that this was actually true, he set up Lou's guitar perfectly, and when Lou came in to to check it out, making sure it was up to his very particular specifications, my colleague tuned the B string a few cents off. Lou sat down to play, and said, 'this is great!! Except what's up with the B string? It sounds like a cat scratching on a blackboard!' My colleague could barely believe this.. apologizing to Lou, he took the guitar back to his bench and retuned the B string perfectly! Lou played it again, and happily took the guitar upstairs to a studio where he was using it to work on a new album! Yes, it was a very sad day for rock music in NYC when Lou passed... His spirit is still amongst us. Lou and Laurie Anderson were neighbors.. we all lived in the same hood.. Fortunately Laurie still walks amongst us.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
Irene Trudel:

Great story prguitar! I had my own encounter with Lou, who was to appear on our live Soundcheck program. He was given my work number and called to ask me if I knew how to mix rock music, guitars specifically (I do). It was very intimidating to me but I think I was able to reassure him that it would sound okay.

Thanks for playing Bill Harkleroad's work Irene! He really is an incredible musician, whether it's his work with Mr. Van Vliet, or Mallard, along with his own solo recording!!. I've been fortunate to have crossed paths with him. We have a mutual luthier friend. I was honored to be able to correspond with Bill some years ago when we discovered the mutual connection!

David (in London):

My Lou story has to be a second-hand one, sadly. My friend Wheeler booked The VU to play at Rutgers University in 1966. Apparently they managed to empty the hall in about ten minutes. Wheeler was talking to Lou after the gig, and Lou looked at him and said gnomically, "Wheeler, every walkout a victory." One of my favourite lines of all time.

You're welcome Irene, and thanks for describing your encounter with Lou.. Sounds very typical.. He certainly could be intimidating.. I think it was due partly because of his perfectionism and also as a construct for protecting himself... He certainly was intensely complex.. Sorry to hear he was doubtful of your tremendous expertise! Certainly a difficult place to find yourself in. For his part, not a very useful way to interact with people in this life.. Thanks for this super show!! I've discovered so much that I'll be glad to return to! ❤️❤️
