My ex was from the South, yet he lived in NJ for decades and lost his accent in every day speech. Every time his friends from TN came to visit, he'd fall into a Southern accent. Heck, even I ended up doing it too.

In high school French class, my fellow New Yorker classmates would speak with a variation on a Bronx accent. My speaking Polish at home gave me a different take, though my Mom would always criticize my Polish pronunciation of complex consonants like szcz and such.

The Americanized way to say my last name is: Ole-sa-witch. The Polish way is: Ole-shye-vitch. One of my sister's used to say that it was close to Old Chevy Witch.

My parents used to drop in German sayings too. They met in a refugee camp in Wildflecken, Germany near Frankfort after WWII. My sisters were born in the camp.
