Welcome to the Jungle. You're gonna... groove.

We will be in the jungle, we will be on the sea, we will be in Manhattan for a time, too...

In case anyone in the chat is pre-gaming for the next show: "Stop Hitting Yourself" with DJ Spacebrother is taking the week off. Instead, you are getting an "all-vinyl" novelty record show, one that, hopefully, Spacebrother would enjoy.

I think Spacebrother will be back next week.
Avatar 4:05pm
Rubberband Girl:

You are doing that, Austin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Austin Rich:

Yep!
Avatar 4:08pm
Mr Fab:

RIght on, looking forward to that!
Avatar 4:09pm

I actually was in Las Vegas this past weekend. But didn't get a chance to look for records. Was cooling listening to Sheena's driving around that nutty town.

You know I'm from Vegas? Born and bred. Explains a little bit...

Super stoked for your fill-in Austin!

I've only been to Vegas once, with my wife. We had a blast, but we didn't really do the nightlife. We found that the daytime drinking / tourist routine was more our speed. We seemed to miss all the other rushes at places to eat, because we were "out of sync" with the nightlife.

I think we found two tiki bars?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Austin Rich:

HyperDose! Nice to see you in the chat.

I'm having a bit of a Manic Monday, as usual, but in a good way πŸ€ͺ

WE have been once but didn't know enough what to do during the day so we kind of missed a lot. Loved the shows. Got see Jubilee before it closed

My grandfather was a dealer at The Sahara for a long time. My mom has some stories...
Avatar 4:24pm

I know my grandmother saw Esquivel many times... I have a few of her records.

Woah! So, you're not just from Vegas. You have family connections!
Avatar 4:25pm

The Jimmie Rodgers version of Kisses Sweeter Than Wine was predated by the recording by the Weavers.

But that same grandfather and grandmother grew up in Hollywood, graduated from Hollywood High, used to go dancing in Catalina in the heyday...
Avatar 4:26pm
Rubberband Girl:

Thank you, David in CA re: Kisses!
Avatar 4:27pm
Mr Fab:

you need to interview your mom for the show!

I def recommend Frankie's Tiki Room bar, btw. Got a souvenir mug of the Frankenstein drink. The jukebox there is a Sheena's show in itself.
Avatar 4:27pm

Does anyone know the actor Gilbert Roland? He is my grandfather's cousin. Looks just like him. Latin lover!
Avatar 4:28pm
Rubberband Girl:

For Mother's Day, I am planning a show of all songs from her bin of 45's. It is a lot of Motown.
Avatar 4:28pm
David in California:

You're welcome, RBG. It's a good version, done as a duet by Pete Seeger and Ronnie Gilbert.
Avatar 4:28pm

Gilbert had a very quaint, but noble working man's mustache

We were there for a typical long weekend, and at Halloween, no less. So we tried to fit in as much as we could, but I'm sure we could have used a local guide. We didn't even know where to look for thrift stores or cool record stores, and there's only so many hours in the day. I do remember we ate and drank well, I didn't fall for any gambling or time shares, and the Neon Museum was pretty cool.

Hopefully he's not holding out for a cracker and/or sliced meat themed opener. That might take a while.
Avatar 4:36pm
HyperDose:

I saw they have nut crackers now. Hesitant to try
Avatar 4:36pm
Mr Fab:

have you ever been to the Viva Las Vegas fest? it happens next week. I haven't been, looks pretty cool, but more rock n roll than lounge I guess so don't know if they're looking for a DJ like you.

You + Richard Cheese = dream team! He was so great at Tiki Oasis last year.

I used to go see him in Vegas way back in 2000/2001. Small lounges. I did actually talk to him face to face at TO last summer, trying to sell it. We'll see.
Avatar 4:39pm
Rubberband Girl:

I used to go to the Las Vegas Grind! Does anyone remember that?!
Avatar 4:41pm

'92-'97 was in Reno Austin, was out and about a bit... small town, good music community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm

My aunt got super-jealous of my Yma Sumac records, and told me she used to dance to them when she was in her late teens, as something fun to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
Austin Rich:

There's might have been some overlap. Kiisu and Glyndon where the couple. I think kiisu played in some goth-adjacent type bands. Maybe one was called Acrylic?
Avatar 4:49pm
Mr Fab:

i want to see the lyric sheet for this song.
Avatar 4:49pm
Rubberband Girl:

I actually have even deeper roots in NV – my great-great grandparents and family established a mining camp up in northern NV in the 19th century...
Avatar 4:50pm
Otis:

I know Acrylic, Both Bill (lead singer) and Christ (keys/etc) are old pals, still in touch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
Austin Rich:

How funny, Otis! I know kiisu was looking for bands to play in, and was jamming with them and some other folks for a while.

kiisu is now in The Secret Light, in PDX. Synth-pop with a pseudo industrial angle. He never stopped making music, either.
Avatar 4:52pm
Otis:

Ha, nice Austin. When you see Kiisu mention Cafe Royale and Limelight and Fallout Shelter ... he will laugh (old spots).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm
Austin Rich:

I'm sure he will. He lived with a guy named Jeff / Raven, who owned a house for spell... until they all moved to PDX. I think Jeff still lives there, too.
