It was pretty common in the US in the 20's - 40's, and a lot of oldtime radio "noir" stories have Marijuana as a mcguffin of some kind.

In the pre-internet days of the world, you could really leave a letter for almost anyone anywhere, so long as you could address it well enough. My friend, in the Peace Corps, told me I could send mail to him as "The American" in his village, and it would get ot him, no matter where he was.

Austin Rich:

Yeah, the quality of the candidate who writes to Box 13 fluctuates from week to week. I think the author liked to imagine that it was "just like real life" that way, but I think it means that some adventures are less full of... adventure, as it were.
  6:13pm
Charles:

I already forgot the code phrase. I'd be terrible for this.

True about ye olden days of mail, Austin - I once heard a radio host of an international music show said that you could write to "Ravi Shankar: India," and he'd get it.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

There was also added importance given to messages / mail, in an era when it was harder to stay in touch with people. I think mail carries less important in general, unfortunately. As someone who mails out hundreds of musical postcards every month, I'm astonished at how many are not delivered, and how many bounce back that are legitimately addressed. It's really strange. But every e-mail I send lives on forever...

True story: my mom's girlfriend from when i was in High School was the kind of woman who kept swords on the wall and attended Sci-Fi conventions. Whenever a friend would come over, they would always ask about the decorative swords.

Where there any overly dramatic soapy kinda shows?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm

Absolutely, SW. I was thinking that I should get a Soap Opera running during the early part of the day, and maybe get Constance to co-host with me.

Maybe a Soap and a daytime comedy could pair well...
  7:19pm
John R.:

Hi Austin and gang, I wonder if any of the Universal Monsters ever did any radio adaptations ?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm

There's a 30's Frankenstein radio adaptation that might be fun to run in October.
  7:19pm
SW:

That could be cool! 😁
  7:20pm
Charles:

I'm so down for all of that. Radio's great isn't it?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm

And there's lots of radio adaptations of the classic Universal Horror films, as one hour radio dramas. I could do some double features around the holidays, too.
  7:20pm

Avatar 7:21pm

  7:25pm
Charles:

It's cute to listen to them be amazed at older stuff while we do the same with the show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Austin Rich:

Someday, I do want to take all the commercials that feature music by Korla Pandit (the stuff I cut out, because it's a really dumb commercial), and run all of them as one long "Chandu" episodes. Maybe for April first next year or something...
  7:26pm
Charles:

I can hear it in my mind, being presented like the intro of Chandu. Korla .. the musician!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Austin Rich:

Yes, Charles! I love it!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Austin Rich:

Box 13 is presented perfectly for commercial breaks. The music consistently has a break point three times an episodes, and was presented that way originally (where there would be commercials, I put in a "fake" commerical.)

I have to fudge things for the other shows. The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen doesn't really have those kinds of music cues that work consistently in the show, so I've had to cut up my own, and interject them a few times each episodes. However, the format of each episode sort of has a break at the beginning and at the end, and there's usually a pretty good spot in the middle that works best.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Austin Rich:

With Chandu, there are two commercial breaks each episode, that contain ads for "White King Soap." (Who paid for the show.) I replace them with my own commercials.

Dimension X didn't begin with any commercial breaks at first, but at some point, Wheaties becomes the sponsor, and I cut out those commercial breaks, and put in the ones I make up.
  7:31pm
SW:

Laters peoples, sleep calls. Cool show again Austin!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks for sticking around, SW!
  7:32pm
Charles:

That's great work Austin, fits well.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Austin Rich:

The Weaties commercials on Dimension X are really boring, and don't have music by Korla, so I probably won't re-air those anywhere, ever. But this period of Dimension X has slightly shorter shows, because a lot of time was given over to the Wheaties ads.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Austin Rich:

As a result, for a while, "Dimestore Revelations" will be a few minutes longer, to make up for this.
Avatar 7:36pm
Mr Fab:

or you could play a Korla record!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Austin Rich:

This episode aired just after the 4th of July, on a Friday. So I imagine there were a lot of kids, and possibly a lot of adults, who were enjoying summer vacation and might have tuned in to listen to this show. And this story was well known in print. People might have tuned in, based on the reputation, too.

It's possibly this episodes had a LOT of listeners.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Austin Rich:

If I had any Korla records, I'd be playing them a bunch! But I could probably find them all online if I really wanted.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Austin Rich:

Earnest Kinoy's own time in the concentration camps certainly informed this plot point.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Austin Rich:

A paper could be written about the way SFX are used in this episode, and how recordings stand in for real things... that are fake things meant to be real, in the world of the story.

But I'm not in college anymore, so I don't need to write papers like that.
Avatar 7:44pm
Mr Fab:

This show looks cool:
en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah! I dig that Sinatra show, and it's pretty good, all things considered. That might be a good follow-up to Box 13, for sure.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Austin Rich:

There's a very short-lived detective show with a female lead, Candy Matson, that has all the roles reversed, for the most part. It's pretty good, but only lasted for a very short run. That one would be fun, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

There's also an adventure show with Bogart and Bacall in the leads, and that show is GREAT, but also, not very long lived.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Austin Rich:

Well, I guess i lasted over a year, so maybe that's not too bad.
Avatar 7:49pm
Mr Fab:

Those sound amazing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Austin Rich:

I think the only "detective" show that I'm not a fan of is Dragnet. I've tried, but the radio version is just BORING. There's other Jack Webb shows that are good, and I'd play those first, if I had to choose.
Avatar 7:54pm
Mr Fab:

interesting, because I love the TV version of Dragnet. The camp aspect helps, I admit.
  7:54pm
Charles:

  7:55pm
John R.:

Gotta go, but thank Austin you for excellent show ! I’ll listen to the rest later.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, I never saw much of the TV version (aside from sticking around for the theme music), so I don't have the same soft spot. I'll let someone else do Dragnet, and I can do "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
Austin Rich:

(There's just under 1000 episodes of Johnny Dollar, so if I get to that point, I'm locking myself in for the "long haul" with Dimestore...)
