It's a bit of an odd mix.
Avatar 8:14pm
Mr Fab:

Commercial radio would thro in jazz instros between rock tracks? Thems was the days...
Avatar 🎸 8:15pm
MarkTime:

Would be my mom's, except she had no jazz. There were some odd mixes on many Chicago FMs back in the day, especially on the little suburban stations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Krys O.:

@HyperDose: I used to watch World at War TV series with my dad. My parents were prisoners of war doing forced labor in Nazi Germany when they were teenagers. That's a long story.
Avatar 8:17pm
HyperDose:

@Krys Were you or anyone able to record/document their experiences? I know it's heavy stuff, but it's important we preserve them as to not repeat the same mistakes in the future.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm

Now there's a throwback: Voice Overs that just tell you the name of the song.

@Austin - now it's everything BUT title & artist, outside of college radio

I'm totally in love the Dawn now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Krys O.:

@MarkTime: Did you ever hear of WHER, the first all-women radio station?
Avatar 🎸 8:23pm
MarkTime:

"Dawn" would have a long career in Chicago radio, mostly under her real name
Avatar 🎸 8:26pm
MarkTime:

@Krys - all I heard of WHER was a special on National Public Radio some years ago, There was a plaque in their honor amongst the history stuff we saw at Sun Studios in Memphis, as Mr. Phillips owned WHER and Sun at the time
Avatar 8:27pm
HyperDose:

I'd love to hear a WHER program or three

Avatar 8:39pm
David in California:

MarkTime, oh, good. I think you'll find it worthwhile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

The red-haired girl was Charlie Brown's pined-for love that is never attained!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yes, the Little Red-Haired Girl, she didn't have any other name. Peppermint Patty was the kind of butch one ("Marcie, stop calling me 'sir'!")
Avatar 8:40pm

I read a lot of Peanuts as a kid, but in a way, the strip sort of just slid off my mind. I can't remember any actual events of any Peanuts strip, just that the kids talked like adults and were always sad.

Which sounds about right.
Avatar 8:42pm
Mr Fab:

That was probably Peppermint Patty, cuz she called Charlie Brown "Chuck." The red-haired girl never said anything. She didn't know Charlie Brown existed.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Kat in Chicago:

Oh I think you're right
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Kat in Chicago:

This is why reading the Sunday funnies aloud doesn't really work

Avatar 8:44pm
Mr Fab:

The naked man hit over the head with a 2x4 - that was the funniest story ever. Love the deadpan reading of it.
Avatar 8:44pm
Mr. X:

Only in the 70s would there be a naked man whose only possession was a concrete block.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yep
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yeah the stories of violence in Chicago these days aren't much on comic elements
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Austin Rich:

I think Don Joyce used to sample / play Dawn / Connie on Over The Edge. This voice sounds VERY familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

I guess if you didn't know the characters, you'd just describe PP as "a little red-haired girl"
Avatar 🎸 8:45pm
MarkTime:

Charlie Brown would just have a rock
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Austin Rich:

Hey, Mr. X! Good to see you in the chat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

at least Charlie Brown wore a sheet.
Avatar 8:46pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, that time Linus slipped some LSD into Charlie Brown's baloney sandwich and he went around naked saying, "I gotta rock."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Pauly from Clifton:

The parallels between the news now and 50 years ago is amazing. Except for the naked guy with the brick. You don't see a lot of that anymore.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Austin Rich:

"I gotta rock. I gotta rock." Zappa tottally stole that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Apparently, ol' Chuck eventually got to kiss the Little Red Haired Girl, but that's up there with solving Laura Palmer's murder for destroying a perfect mystery: peanuts.fandom.com...
Avatar 8:49pm
Mr Fab:

When I was a teenager, transitioning from trick-or-treating to handing out the candy, i actually did put rocks in some kids's bags. Charlie Brown made me do it.
Avatar 🎸 8:50pm
MarkTime:

Hopefully the rocks were not returned, through a window
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Austin Rich:

I can only imagine that you were not alone in that behavior, Mr. Fab.

I remember my parents conned me into staying home and handing out candy by telling me that I could watch TV and eat candy. I realize they wanted someone to watch the house so other kids didn't vandalize our place while they took my siblings out to trick or treat.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Kat in Chicago:

OMG
Avatar 8:53pm
Mr. X:

I remember this one.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

This is so opposite the Peanuts cartoon
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Kat in Chicago:

Probably, Austin, this song gets a LOT of airplay on Sheena
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm

Yes ... I think they understand each other all too well
Avatar 8:56pm
Mr Fab:

Austin, this is the orig, Shangri-La played a cover earlier today. (I'd say most Sheena's DJs have played versions of "J'Taime!")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

all the streams could coordinate to play it simultaneously!
Avatar 8:56pm
Mr Fab:

Nope, uncensored.
"Mommy, what's wrong with that lady in the song?"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Austin Rich:

I guess I have to play it, too?

Or, we should coordinate that, some week.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm

Otis and Darryl definitely play parodies of this
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
