Hello, all! Today's playlist pic is a collage by Japanese artist Keiichi Tanaami. It's untitled and is from 1969.

Lucky Clear Channel likely knew squat about Laurie Anderson, else they'd have banned this after 9/11 on the "Here come the planes / They're American planes" line as they did so many other tunes for a spell.

Hi Chresti. I always have liked O Superman, due to its spaciness, but realize I don't know what the song is about.

O Superman... isn't it about the American Military? Of course it's somewhat open-ended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember hearing O Superman for the first time very early in the morning on the radio when I was a teenager. I just thought it was so peculiar. I'd never heard anything quite like it. I just lay there transfixed and unable to move until it was over.

Was just looking at Wickedpedia. Apparently, about the military and also technology/communications; some text derived from a Massenet opera. Don't have time to delve more now.

Years later, I remember hearing that Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson were a couple and suddenly recalled that I had a nearly identical experience of hearing Walk On The Wild Side for the first time as a very young kid: sleeping over at a friend's house and unable to sleep in a strange place so we had the radio on and this weird song with this guy talking rather than singing - telling me these weird things which I couldn't quite understand - breaking the fourth wall with 'and the Colored girls sing..'. It made an impression.

Choirs in the kitchen... there's a video artist named Guido Van Der Werve. His videos are a little hard to find on the internet but totally worth seeing if you have a chance. I believe there's one where he had a choir perform in his apartment. In another he has a Steinway lifted in with a crane. I believe that one is called Nummer zes
Avatar 1:22pm
TDK60:

Really? A singer/group called Lester Maddox? I recall a 1960s racist politician from Georgia by that name. [?]
Avatar 1:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Weirdly ... yes! They're an '80s metal band. Not sure what they were thinking....
Avatar 1:31pm
TDK60:

I was inspired to join the civil rights movement as a teen when I saw racist cruelty right on TV news often in the '60s. One time, Maddox was shown outside his restaurant with a baseball bat to prevent blacks from entering. I knew that was wrong. Seeing people being firehosed or attacked by police dogs didn't make me want to go join the racists either.

Okay, I know I'm the only one talking about this, but I'm rethinking... the Guido Van Der Werve video may have been an orchestra in his apartment. That seems more right.

And I'm off. Thanks as always Tony! Take care and good Tuesday everyone!

TDK, my Tuesday journey involves Liverpool Street station. Probably my favourite of London's major rail stations, in large part due to happy childhood memories of being there with my dad and shopping at the nearby Petticoat Lane Market with its now (sadly long-gone) Yiddish delis, bread shops and assorted culinary hotspots.
