Fred: Baraka and anger, no doubt. Do you think if CT as angry, or “angry art”?

@fred, the one time I saw him live, he called an intermission and said he had some things “to work out with the band.” That sounded ominous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am
Jeff Golick:

I know very little of Pat Thomas's biography, alas. I only recently became aware of some of his recent work, via Cafe Oto releases, and the Ahmed group work, and then had that somewhat familiar experience of realizing that Thomas has already had this deep career that I'm only now beginning to understand the outlines of.

Fred, Can you imagine slugging it out just before the curtain goes up? It's happened. Arthur Lee and Jay Donnelan had a fist fight just before Love went on stage. Arthur Lee was a badass, but apparently so was Jay. Needles to say, they didn't go on....then Jay got fired!

RR, last night I didn't mean to be so harsh on Terrence McKenna. As a young tripster he illuminated many things that were beyond my grasp. I was an avid listener when he had a show on KPFK in the long ago. But I became a more critical person as I grew up. And as showboat clown myself, I could see what he was doing - different topic, but the methodology was all to familiar.

@ the end of Marty's comments I posted this but probly too late :
Via Psychedelic Salon, I've listened to McKenna expound for hours on a very wide scope of topics - inclusive of course of his favorite themes. What I liked right away is that he seemed to reject any notion of his own Guruhood - or anybody else's, formally @ least. For sure he made a living with his verbal output & its presentation - with all the occupational hazards we know that does involve... There was also a certain kind of Reach Exceeding Grasp that - as someone myself of a certain probing intellect & a certain amount of psychedelic drug use - I recognized with familiarity... That, after all being the task he set himself - to bring as much of the Other Realm back to Earth as he was capable of...

I did see it RR, and I thought it concise and well stated....but I was beyond making comments - it happens. Terrence was a psychonaut in the truest sense - he went where others didn't dare go and came back to talk about it! That alone puts him in a very select class of brave human beings.

Of course, he kind of did anyhow. But he passed as long ago as 2000 - & listening to PsychSalon, the druggy intelligentsia seem to have a good balance of affection, regard & benign critique re Terence. WR:

I missed your opening announcement Jeff, so I did some web searching for some context of this, particularly because I was worried if the voices I keep hearing are in my head or on the recording. Found this:

"In August 2018, musicians Paul Abbott and Seymour Wright (together known as XT) and Pat Thomas took part in a tribute to Cecil Taylor at London’s Cafe Oto, four months after the death of the US pianist. In advance of the performance, the trio looked to Taylor's “attitudes of preparation” to inspire them, and created a piece developed in response to their listening to, and discussion of, Cecil Taylor Unit's Akisakila, recorded in Japan in 1973.

The audio resulting from this exercise was then used as a framework for the live performance. “We prepared the piece, transcribing elements,” they explain. “And developed a series of cycles – unit structures – made up of various voices of Cecil’s influences and associates (real and imaginary), and at the end the voice of Cecil himself.”
www.thewire.co.uk...
The recording of the 2018 concert is now to be released by Swiss label Edition Gamut, housed in a sleeve intended to exhibit the way the group want to remember Taylor's influence. The artwork is built from weaving transcripts of interviews between the musicians and the label, as well as Cecil Taylor and pianist Eric Plaks."

Seems the voices are in the recording, this time.
