Happy halloween !!

Austin Rich:

Nice to see you, Charles! We're wearing costumes... and reading scripts!

Austin Rich:

Dexter Roland is a character that I created when I was in Jr. High / High School. He's made a number of radio appearances, but it made sense to put him in the Marcus Little universe, as you'll find out as you listen...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
Austin Rich:

The ideas in this story have been floating around in my head since those early Dexter Roland days, so to finally see it materialized like this really means a lot to me. Hopefully, it works for you, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
Austin Rich:

The Announcer is Travis Doane.

Happy Halloween!! 🎃

Marcus Little is played by Jason Ramey, a local improv comedian, writer, and radio personality.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm

Heather! Nice to see you in the chat!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm

Marcus' secretary is played by Jessica Ramey.

Sara Lund is a detective reference, and an Unwound reference.

Heather:

I'm tuned in and excited! Sounding great!

I carry notecards with me going everywhere, usually.

Mr Fab:

Hey Austin and a cast of thousands!

“The seedier side of Century City,” that’s quite funny. It’s just a bunch of high-rise office buildings and an affluent outdoor mall. I wish it had a seedy side!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Austin Rich:

You can tell I've never been to Century City. It's a name I sort of made up... my version of Century City is more like LA from The Big Sleep.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Austin Rich:

In case it wasn't obvious, this is my tribute to, "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" Radio program.
  9:12pm
Charles:

Hello Heather 🎃

Thanks for your entire october programming Austin. Halloween is my favorite time of the year and the dimestore and mid-valley episodes were a great addition to the fall season.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Austin Rich:

Ahhhh, that's sweet, Charles. I guess I sort of like Halloween a little bit, too.

(We have 12 totes of decorations, and collect vintage blowmolds.)

Heather:

Hi Charles!

That commercial voice is Jesse from The Epoxies, The BloodTypes, and The Automatics.

WFMU needs $9,900 within 3 hours. *waves arms* Go, listeners! Go, listeners!

Mort Linger is played by Sean Royal, of The Ether Creeps. He also wrote the music for this commercial, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Austin Rich:

Comedian Geoff Parks is the announcer, and is also a local musician and podcaster.
Avatar 9:16pm
Mr Fab:

He does an excellent commercial announcer voice.

Krys O.:

Hooray!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Austin Rich:

Heather, since you are in the chat: do you have any comments on recording your parts for this?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Austin Rich:

The story for this is "loosely inspired by" the story, "Death And The Compass," by Jorge Borges, a "sort of" detective story. But there's a lot of other influences, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Krys O.:

$9313 and dropping
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Austin Rich:

"GIVE TILL IT HURTS," to quote Space Ghost.
  9:23pm
Heather:

I did the tracks so long ago, it's hard to remember! Poor old brain. But I do remember it was... strange... just reading my lines and guessing on what inflection to use, you know? Without hearing how the other lines were delivered?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

That was the hardest part, assembling this remotely: not having reference tracks to listen to. But it sort of worked...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Austin Rich:

"Fred & Barney" are Dash Thompson, local comedian, and Travis Doane, who was the best man at my wedding.
  9:26pm
Heather:

It totally worked great! You and everyone did a FANTASTIC job!! It was and is an honor to be part of the cast!!

wenzo toad:

Shoot I missed the beginning… gonna have to check this out in the archive
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Austin Rich:

Nice to see you in the chat, wenzo!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Austin Rich:

Geoff Parks also doubles as the voice of the ghost. I have always loved the gimmick that one person understands the nonsense that some one is saying, but the audience has to infer most of it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

Captain Amazing might be the next character that gets spun out of this script.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

And that's the voice of Tim Maloney! Doing the Parson Sanders Cafe voice.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Austin Rich:

Musician Brendan Murry did all the music for this program, who does a lot of music for movies he works on with Matt Orefice.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Austin Rich:

Save for the song that Betty sings, coming up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

Itty is a reference to the "Green Lantern" comics.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

"Ape" is a reference to the comic book, "Angel & The Ape," a detective comic where a woman named Angel and an ape named Ape solve crimes.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Austin Rich:

"ABS" is a reference to Negativland, the fictional radio station that they used to reference on Over The Edge.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Austin Rich:

Betty is played by the local musician and comedian, Emma Pace Jonas, and she was really game for doing both the singing and the acting. I was excited too, because she really delivered.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Austin Rich:

The music for Betty's song was written and performed by Matt Orefice, who originally asked me to write and produce this show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm

Merlin & Greg are played by Little Fyodor and The Weatherman, our celebrity guest stars!

whoa - i didn't know you created your own the old-timey radio stories. I enjoyed following the old recordings with you but this is next level. Great!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm

hearing this made me hit the pledgy button for a wee one-timer. Which is a less rude than it sounds....
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Austin Rich:

These "monologues" that both Dexter Roland and Marcus Little deliver in this show are inspired by the monologues that Phillip Marlowe's character always delivers at the end of each episode of his show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
drowsy:

I liked that dirt-nap jive
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Austin Rich:

A lot of these commercials are parodies of obscure old time radio commercials. The idea of commercials directed toward a specific gender - and being creepy about it - was common.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Austin Rich:

"The Old Pink Dog Saloon" is a Douglas Adams reference.
Avatar 10:18pm
Mr Fab:

I've been jumping up to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters, and checking out the adorables in their li'l costumes, so I have no idea what's happening in the story. But no matter, hard-boiled dialogue is it's own reward.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Austin Rich:

The backing music here is a "Spike Jones" soundalike, that Matt Orefice recorded.
Avatar 10:19pm
Mr Fab:

The Weatherman! Little Fyodor!
Avatar 10:20pm
Mr Fab:

I'm all about Spike Jones soundalikes. Is it available anywhere?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

Both were so game for this, it was a lot of fun to work with them.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

Yeah, I'll send you the files.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Austin Rich:

"We get offers!" always cracks me up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Austin Rich:

Here's Heather's other appearance.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Austin Rich:

"Jonni Thunder" is the name of a detective character from a comic book that I quite loved, but didn't last long... probably because it had a female lead.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

More Negativland references. Once I cast The Weatherman, I put in a lot more Negativland references.
  10:30pm
Heather:

I'm still hanging out enjoying the show! Great stuff!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Austin Rich:

Of course your scenes are great!
  10:31pm
Heather:

I did ok! Everyone truly knocked it out of the park!!
Avatar 10:31pm

Heather is KILLIN' IT.
  10:33pm
Heather:

Thank you, Mr Fab!! It was so fun to be a part of this!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Austin Rich:

Heather writes and performs a sketch every week on her show with Ross, her co-host, that is about to have it's 500th episode soon. Their show is "The Sound of Tomorrow."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
drowsy:

I am imagining that Brain Chippendale from Lightning Bolt is the guy who moans and mumbles, complete with headdress.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Austin Rich:

That is REALLY funny, drowsy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Austin Rich:

After all of that, Marcus is still worried about getting paid.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Austin Rich:

A changing of the guard.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Austin Rich:

Candy Matson is the name of a great female radio detective that, unfortunately, only has a few episodes that survived into the modern era. I'll run them all on this show, eventually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
drowsy:

Heather is good. Amazed at the output from this crew.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Austin Rich:

Radio don't make itself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

Like my mom always said: a dead dick is the only one you _can_ trust.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Austin Rich:

In this universe, Dean Martin played Marcus Little for a year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
WR:

Really great. Austin. Cast, production. Great story. Dialog.
Avatar 10:45pm
Mr Fab:

Little Fyodor and The Weatherman need their own show. They're a great combo. The new Abbot and Costello.
Avatar 10:46pm
Mr Fab:

"From the station you grew up with" LOL!! Casey Kasem, we salute you.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Austin Rich:

I agree, Mr. Fab! The Weatherman has offered to do more voices for me, but we've had trouble connecting, since he's been doing so many shows with Negativland.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Austin Rich:

I get this song endlessly stuck in my head... an earworm that was stuck with me while I was writing this. So I had to include it somehow.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Austin Rich:

There is a 10 volume movie set, a series of films, that Matt Orefice released, where Marcus Little is the radio show that different characters in three different movies in that series are listening to.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Austin Rich:

So we all got imdb credits for doing this.
  10:55pm
Heather:

A friend I hadn't heard from in a while texted a few weeks ago, asking if I'd been in a movie. It took a sec but I remembered, yes, I was! She'd been telling someone about me and Googled me and found my IMDB credit and was, like, whaaaat? But no, that was me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
drowsy:

Really good writing!! It is so risky to into Hammett-Chandlerland and you hit the bullseye.
  10:56pm
Heather:

Happy Halloween, everyone, and thanks for the awesome show, Austin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
WR:

Thank you for putting lots of info and context about the show in the comments.
Avatar 10:58pm

and with an hour left in the Hellraiser, we still need $6,963 ..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm

Thanks everyone! That was fun to hear again!
