Favoriting April 2, 2023: A Little Booker Music and a Lotta Coryell
Trumpet gargantuan Booker Little packed a superb career into just a few years before dying at 23 from uremia, never recording a side that wasn't indispensable. By rights, he should be with us on this, his 85th birthday; Larry Coryell ranged far and wide over musical multiverses with virtuosity, incorrigibility, lyricism, and heart. Missing him today, on his 80th.

Hello Stork and swells! I’ll be enjoying this one from the archives after I work my way out of this overstuffed tin tube that, come showtime, will be hurtling its way across the Atlantic. In deference to the prior US administration’s restoration of import restrictions on Cuban rum, I’ve left instructions with Herr DJ Barkeep to pour Cuba Cautivas* all around.

*Cuba Cautiva
2oz Glen Passaic
4oz Coca Cola, preferably Mexican or Passover Coke
Wedge of lime

1. Place 4 ice cubes in a tall glass
2. Add Glen Passaic, top with Coke and garnish with lime
3. ???
4. ¡REVOLUCIÓN!

I have pretty much all of this music, but nice to hear it curated (will catch up with the 1st hour tomorrow morning).
It's great stuff; an original conception is not easy to come by (not just his playing, but the compositions and arrangements of Little's music are amazing).

As far as dying of "uremia", I've never quite gotten that, and can't find anything that gives more details. It definitely is a result of kidney failure (literally urine not being excreted collecting in the bloodstream). You can be born with kidneys that don't function (but it would be odd to just find that out in your 20's). A kidney infection would be the other most common reason for the kidneys to fail; severe infections will enlarge the kidneys and cause them to stop functioning. This could be from drug use (though I can't find anything suggesting Little was a junkie), but you can get kidney infections just randomly. If treated early, you shouldn't get kidney damage/failure, but with the state of health care for musicians in general, Black musicians in specific, there very likely could be delays in diagnosis and/or treatment.

I've been Googling Dophy's passing a bit-it's a bit controversial whether he was mistreated/ignored or not. From what I've read, he was in diabetic coma, but hadn't had a history of diabetes previously. Some say he was ignored and felt to be in a drug overdose, but I've read elsewhere that he was given insulin, which would be appropriate in diabetic shock. In general, presenting to a hospital with diabetic shock is very nasty-mortality, even with perfect management, is very high. Your body has alreaedy shut down, and bringing it back is possible, but not automatic. People still die when they are admitted in diabetic shock, come, acidosis.
(of course, it wouldn't be unusual for a Black Man to get substandard treatment, more so in the US, I'd think, but I don't think it's possible to know at this point in time without seeing the medical records).

Coryell was always in my peripheral vision during the '70s, "prog-adjacent" is how we'd put it today, much like Mahavishnu Orchestra, on whom I more clearly focused. I'd go to Moby Disc in Van Nuys, rifle through the racks: German prog, British prog, Italian prog...Larry Coryell...hmmm?

I was a little tyke in 1964, but I'd think it would be automatic
to check glucose in an Emergency Room (at least now, it can be checked in a minute from a fingerstick blood sample); you could be in coma for many reasons but a high blood glucose is easy to diagnose and has specific treatment. You could also be in coma from a low blood glucose, easily treated with IV glucose, so not checking glucose (at least now) is unimaginable (a junkie with exposure, not eating, could very well have a low glucose, drug use and low glucose could go together, still would need to be checked)

Well - playing a note @ a time - as he also does - as a Harmonic requires only ("only") knowing precisely where to put your finger on that side (without fretting) - & plucking with the other hand. But playing more than one Harmonic @ once is ...interesting... I can see doing it for an open chord (D,G & B strings in an 'A' chord *shape* for instance)...

If I recall, only certain parts of the fingerboard will allow you to touch the string without fully fretting, and get a harmonic (at symmetrical divisions of the strig length). But I believe some get a sort of "fake harmonic" on other frets with a slight damp of the right palm (Robbie Robertson did this sort of thing, at least I think this is the case. I could be all wrong, labsed guitar player and all...)

Avatar 2:22pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

↳ Stork @2:19
Well - you can also fret - & pick Harmonics for the 'new' string length for any note you choose. You then have to know / intuit / calculate o the fly the 'symmetries' docjazz refers to (half the resonating string length, a third...) for each fretted position.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
doctorjazz:

And, to belabor this technical point, if you fret with your left hand, say on the 3rd fret, the spot on the string that is half way (and can generate a harmonic) is now 2 notes higher; you can use an index finger to touch that spot, with a different finger or a pick striking the string. Of course, I can't do ANY of this...

I don't think Jeff G mentioned it on his show, but he did post on another show's board about being or going there...

I brought my wife-to-be to Victo only once, 2000, the year before we married. She went along for the ride, but she also got us great seats for one of the big shows. Waited in line at the venue. I remember a show with Xavier Charles, John Butcher, and Axel Dörner. We were seated near the front at the medium-sized venue. As you might expect, a very quiet show. My wife was put off by the sound of spittle issuing from the mouthpieces.

Maybe that was 2001...
