I have a morbid fascination with Cielo Drive. On the ten year anniversary (or whatever one calls it) of the murders, a group of us took a trip to see it. We got as far as the bottom of the long driveway. Nowadays, the house is completely new, and it has been on the market for some ungodly sum.

i've driven past the former site of Spahn Ranch. Just a big empty lot now. No one's built on it. I realize people wouldn't want the bad mojo, but considering LA-area real estate, you'd think someone wouldn't be able to resist a giant hunk of empty real estate.

Dean:

Never made it to Spahn Ranch, but I have driven by the gas station in Sylmar off 5 where the "Family" deposited a wallet of one of the victims (or so Bugliosi claimed).

Some people do like the bad mojo. Trent Reznor acquired the Cielo Drive home before it was razed. I suppose he's an outlier. I've always found NIN cheesy a blandly juvenile.

someone said something similar about Bugliosi on one of my boards that he's full of shit
  10:30pm

Well, Bugliosi was a zealous advocate. That was his job. The "race war" motif helped to craft the larger narrative.
  10:31pm
Dean:

It's about time we hear Steppenwolf on these "airwaves"! Pre-Tate/LaBianca!

Well, as Rev pointed out, the man has been busy for the last two decades producing movie soundtracks with Atticus Ross. You should take some time to sample the soundtracks they've done together. You'll hear another side of Reznor you've never heard before and maybe think differently about him.

"Everthing has been dumbed down": passive voice. Who is doing the dumbing, I wonder? I spend my days among very smart young students. From my non-methodical observations, I'd say some have adopted bad habits, but for the most part, wow, they are impressive. I recently chatted with a student who is making her way through John Rawls' Theory of Justice. That is the very opposite of dumbed down.

Yes, Hammill is progressive rock. I heard him quite a bit on the Long Beach KNAC station prog show. Never quite got into him or VDGG. I always perceived this era, '73-ish, as entailing a competition between the Peters, Gabriel and Hammill.

The early Groovies stuff is raw rock 'n' roll. Dave Edmunds produced Shake Some Action, which is indeed something of a masterpiece if you're into early Beatles. The following albums were also good, with a cover song here or there (e.g., "Feel a Whole Lot Better) worth your time.
