With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Favoriting May 21, 2023: Cello and Twang
A double-header birthday swingle-dingle! Cellist, singer and composer Arthur Russell tragically passed away from complications of AIDS in 1992, not yet 41. His legacy as classical player, avant-garde icon, and dance music producer is remarkable, and still growing. Guitarist and sometimes banjo and trumpet player Marc Ribot was born 69 years ago today in Newark, New Jersey, and is still plying his inside/outside musical genius in countless directions.

*sidles into the Club dressed as an old London rag and bone man: dirty black wool suit, frayed rope for a belt, Wellington boots, battered bowler hat, pushing a rickety hand cart filled with detritus. Slumps onto a bar stool, downs an extra large Glen Passaic. the rags ignite, smouldered and filling the side of the Club with acrid smoke*

Afternoon El Storkerino and assembled Club-goers.

I saw Carlas band, The Geraldine Fibbers many times. They were a fixture on the Eastside music scene of the '90's in L.A. Stan Ridgway told me this: Him and his brother Ken were trying to get Bo Diddly to play at their high school. They called him at home, his wife answered the phone. "Hello Mrs. Diddly, is Mr. Diddly home?" she paused "He's under the car." Stan persisted "Can I talk to him?" Bo's wife got him to come in the house and talk to Stan and his brother.

It worked! Bo played at their high school. Kaleidoscope with David Lindley opened the show.
