Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

I have a very fond memory of Jen Shuy doing a solo show in Paris a decade ago, with not just piano but instruments from Taiwan and Timor.
One from Timor blew my mind because there's a similar one in Madagascar. It's a long way, but I wouldn't put that beyond these navigators

Jen's story triggered a memory. When I was in Japan, i lost the first person I was close to, my grandfather. The summer before we moved there, I spent w/ him and my grandmother while my parents prepared to move (to Japan, b/tn Yokohama and Tokyo). The next January, my father got the call from my grandmother, my mother picked me up from school, and told me. I was in shock and thought she meant my great-grandmother (who was 100 at the time). The next day, we were driving through the melting morning snow on our way to narita to fly to WV (well, pittsburgh, as WV doesn't have any real international airports).

Triggered memories here too, NGH.

While I was in Japan (for 6 months in 1987) my paternal Grandmother died. I wasn't told until months later, at a family gathering, after I had returned to the USA. All sorts of memories (and questions still) around that.
