Favoriting July 1, 2023: Falsa's Sufi Sounds

Falsa’s foundation is in 14th century Sufi mysticism - reimagined through the improvisational energy of modern New York. Or as the band puts it on their web page:

"Anchored in the mystic traditions of 14th-century Sufi music—akin to the elevating poetry of Rumi—the group serves up an eclectic blend of minimalist meditation, raga jazz fusion, high-energy world improvisation, and immersive ritual-communitas performances featuring dancers and captivating visuals. But at its heart, Falsa is dedicated to normalizing the transcendent experience through music."

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Falsa has a debut album out, American Sufi, and they'll do their thing live at Little Island July 5th, 12th and 13th (all free) and Riverside Park South (also free) July 9th, as well as at Buunni Coffee, Inwood July 21st and Barbès in Park Slope July 29th. Hear them first, right here on WFMU!

slugluv! in the last two weeks, slept on my arm wrong, and now my whole left side is a bundle of radiating pain. Had to ask a 250lb neighbor (i'm 170 lb) to walk on my back (totally normal neighborly, request). there was a pop in my back. It's feels like i've been trampled in Pamplona, but it's normal pain, not , 'wtelf is that?' pain. I suppose it's my body telling me I'm getting old. I've broken bones that didn't effect me like this (i might also be getting soft). Feel fine. I just need to feel normalish by my interview Monday.

I just started running again, and those parts and cardio are fine. I've usually do pushups a few times per week, and when I dropped to the floor yesterday, i couldn't get up. my arm just wouldn't move (when I was younger, I could just work through the pain).

Interview, yeah. I'm trying to research stuff to impress. a former grad classmate/coworker is working on the same project. Hopefully, my two-year gap in GIS employment won't work against me.

More into hermetic Metaphysics these days - was more of a Mystic as a kid after discovering psychedelics - a pretty typical situation I'd venture. Inbetween were very NeoPagan years for Culture... Anyhow, I certainly appreciated that the Sufis were very much in favor of certain Musics, Poetry, direct Mystical experience &tc. - in contrast to those Muslims who wish to forbid Music altogether for instance.

Sufism could have been such an enrichment for Islam, unfortunately their mystic revalations where firmly oppressed. As for instance the mystic exclaiming 'i am god' would be punished by death. Philosopically however that exclamation is spot on.

Are you in a jurisdiction where you can get a medical card? Otherwise, ask around. I have an elderly family member in FL who had multiple spinal surgeries and was on a million v. strong painkillers. As he is also in the medical profession, he just keeps in touch with other reitred colleagues in NY/NJ who send him stuff on the regular. Edibles, especially, travel v well by mail although he prefers flower when he can get it. My Mom, may she rest in peace, had a major green thumb and even beffore she got the cancer, she used to have a greenhouse. When her 401K from the teacher's union took a huge dive one year, we kept joking that she should grow her own and call it "Grandma's Killer Shit"

Also, if you can get mail order Delta 8 or 9 syrups/edibles mailed to you, those may help a lot also. I've actually found Delta 8 edibles to be MORE effective for some kinds of pain. I know purists hate the stuff, but everyone is different.

and although, most sufism was 'derived' from shiaism, there are a small minority that were 'derived' from sunnism. But, yes correct, they flourished until militant orders took control the political apparatus . (Just one example, see the almohad's). This trend has continued into the modern era...

mail-order stuff directly to my address may see other hands before it sees me. When in surgery, I've eschewed painkillers (as I know why I'm in pain), and have relied on non-opiates. Day-to-day, cannabis seems to be a good option forward. My siblings may not give me much (they are Trumpers), but they will give some of their greenery.
