Playing the best of Japanese Indies and underground (and other stuff). Music you will hear nowhere else! Mike has been fired from every Tokyo FM station at least once and some of them 4 times! I wear it as a stinky badge of honor because FM in Japan sucks so much. Tune in! Be there!

Avatar 8:39pm

a long time ago, he was an assistant engineer at Meldac Studio
Avatar 8:39pm
Mike Rogers:

Is this song a Nick Lowe original?
Avatar 8:40pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @8:39
There are lots of Teddy Boys. In Japan, these types and fashions never went out of fashion for a group of people
Avatar 8:41pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:39
Dave Edmunds, I think?
Avatar 8:41pm
Mike Rogers:

They hang out at a club called Heavy Sick in Hatagaya.
Avatar 8:41pm
Ted:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:40
I figure there were many, but do they call themselves Teddy Boys?
Avatar 8:42pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Mr Fab @8:41
Ah! Yes. I knew it was one of those guys!
Avatar 8:42pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @8:41
Yep. They still do.
Avatar 8:43pm
Ted:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:42
Good to know the sub-cultures continue on!
Avatar 8:45pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @8:43
I saw on Facebook, they had a dance maybe last week... Dancing and teaching people how to dance in that 50s style (the girls are all dressed like American Graffitti)
Avatar 8:47pm
Ted:

When I was in Tokyo, I thought it was interesting that they had a "Graffitti" section in many of the record stores. In the U.S., it would be Rockabilly.
Avatar 8:48pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @8:47
Really? It was called, "Graffitti?" (I don't know, I never go to record stores!)
Avatar 8:49pm
Mike Rogers:

Maybe I should go and get out of the 2000s someday.
Avatar 8:49pm
Mr Fab:

they call rockabilly "Graffiti"? Never heard it called that before.
Avatar 8:50pm
Mike Rogers:

Bands are sending me records all the time but I don't even have a plattenspeiler.
Avatar 8:50pm
Ted:

Mostly comps (omnibuses) of Nihon '50s revival bands from the early '80s.
Avatar 8:50pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:48
Really? I love record stores! Can't go in without buying something
Avatar 8:51pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Mr Fab @8:49
Oh, Mr. Fab, the Japanese hack up English words all the time. A big example, and they still do this is the word, "Glamour." It doesn't mean in Japanese what it means in English at all. In Japanese, it means "Large Breasts.! No kidding. There tons like this.
Avatar 8:56pm
Mike Rogers:

Kanojo ha gurama (She is glamorous) means, in Japanese, "She has big tits."
Avatar 8:56pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Mr Fab @8:50
That is exactly why I don't go in!!!
Avatar 8:57pm
Mike Rogers:

Kid in a candy store!!!
Avatar 8:57pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @8:50
What are the names of those comps?
Avatar 8:58pm
Ted:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:51
So is there glam rock as we know it? Bowie, TRex, Slade, Sweet, Mud influence, Sadistic Mika Band?
Avatar 9:00pm
Ted:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:57
I flipped through them and found them interesting, but went on to the G.S. section. I would have to dig around Discogs to get the names.
Avatar 9:00pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @8:58
There are bands who called themselves "Glam" but I don't see it. One really popular "Glam" band is "Young Parisians." I like them alot.... But is it Glam? Their last single was bubblegum rock.
Avatar 9:02pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:56
Funny, but also nicely put.
Avatar 9:02pm
Ted:

↳ Mike Rogers @9:00
I'm familiar with Young Parisians from that the KOGA comp "Eight Beat Dudes" with Supersnazz and Rocket K. Plus, you play them on your show.
Avatar 9:03pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Mr Fab @9:02
Really, when Japanese use Japglish, it just confuses me.
Avatar 9:05pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @9:02
The lead singer of Young Parisians is the boss of Club Heavy Sick in Hatagaya.... Really nice, humble guy.
Avatar 9:06pm
Ted:

↳ Mike Rogers @8:57
It looks like Toshiba's Express label released some Graffiti comps:
www.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:07pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @8:58
Sadistic Mika Band has a VERY dark history. I'm not sure but they completely fell apart after all that UK successes and then the leader committed suicide.
Avatar 9:08pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @9:06
I don't know anything about any major labels at all... Only Sony and no comment abou those "fine" folks.
Avatar 9:08pm
Ted:

↳ Mike Rogers @9:07
Did not know that!
Avatar 9:08pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @9:08
It's even worse than I described....

↳ Song: "Outer Space" by "Floppy Pinkies"
Welcome Max D. amd hello Chris. Just watced the Japanese two part "Tribute to the Muffs" on YouTube and it had the Floppy Pinkies doing "Outer Space," Firestarter, The Tuesday and the Wimpy's
www.youtube.com...
Avatar 9:18pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Ted @9:17
Wow! Those are all cool bands.
Avatar 9:19pm
Max D:

Mike - I had to share the story of the man on the stolen mamachari bicycle that you shared this week with a friend of mine who's an avid cyclist who works in the bicycle industry. He was impressed not only with the man's initiative, but that the police in Japan would chase down a stolen bike. 😆
Avatar 9:19pm
Mike Rogers:

Why don't the bands tell me these things? Oh well, I've been asking myself this same question for nearly 40 years....
Avatar 9:20pm
Chris Ianuzzi:

Mike san You are on it tonight!
Avatar 9:21pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Max D @9:19
I laughed at that one a lot. In Japan, they are called "Mamachari" because they are definitely NOT built for distance or speed. It is quiet impressive he rode one of those for so far!
Avatar 9:22pm
Max D:

↳ Ted @9:17
Thanks Ted! A kid I went to middle/high school with (Chris Crass) was one of the drummers for The Muffs!
Avatar 9:22pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Max D @9:19
Generally speaking, cops here have seemingly nothing to do, so they would hassle some guy pushing a mamachari up a hill.
Avatar 9:23pm
Ted:

Wow, the drummer before Roy, I believe.

As my dad used to say, Max san, "I'll bet we don't have the same friends!" He'd say things like to this just to cnfuse me as a little kid.
  9:33pm
kev:

Jumpin Jack Flash was tame compared to the rest of the show and there’s nothing tame about that song
