I was talking with friends last night about NYC cab drivers, and recalled a wild ride several years ago, where the driver was blasting Manu Dibango and practically had the car up on two wheels, missing parked cars by inches and never dropping below 40 mph. At the end of the ride, I complimented him. "I am from Cameroun and I am a fucking WARRIOR, man!" he said. "At home there is everything in the road. Everything! Here there are lanes and lights. It is too easy. I cut through this city like a hot knife through butter!" I gave him a $50 tip.

I love it. That is a great story. I always enjoyed (and was slightly scared) thrilling cab rides (have had a few more ordinary ones that involved extremely high speeds down avenues in the city on a green light flow. (Since they started enforcing speed now, you don't see as much of that now)

Once, as a tourist, waiting for the light to change, in a knotted group of weary folks going to work at 8 in the morning, somewhere in midtown Manhattan, a hurtling yellow cab totally nailed an elderly woman who had entered the crosswalk on the other side, and she actual flew past us in a long arc, like a limp crash-test dummy, turfing across the asphalt and coming to rest. Momentarily, for she got up and began to walk away! Until the horrified cab-driver ran to her, and prevented her from going anywhere. We all winced, collectively, and were stunned. The speed was incredible and so was the unspeakable absurdity of the violence. It's an adventure in the world of the New York taxicab, but the risk is real.
