Favoriting July 26, 2023: The Year Oum Kalthoum Died
With the passing of Egypt's greatest voice in February, 1975 evolved into a transitional year in the nation's music. Sono Cairo released its last 7" singles, going all-in on longform formats forever after. Hany Mehanna's debut LP hinted at an electronic era to come while Ahmed Adaweya published his first shaabi collection on cassette -- the first couple of what would prove fatal blows to the more traditional strains practiced by Kalthoum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Warda Al-Jazeera, and Farid Al-Atrash. This episode will highlight defining moments ripped from original media of the period.

A pertinent question. I figure the ensemble is large enuff it's probly pretty well formulated. But maybe it's comparable to Raga in being Classically Formal with provision (even expectation) for Improvisation within it ? The Vocal ornamentations particularly ?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm

Tom, yes, both singing and instrumentation is often improvised live to some degree, not as in "solos," but in terms of chunks of a song being repeated, etc., at the singer's whim, based on audience response, but there are also improvised forms, such as the mawal, which Ahmed Adaweya, for instance, excelled at

That's a good question, RevRab -- one major difference is that Mekkawi wrote songs meant to be orchestrated whereas I'm not sure if Hamza El Din did. This track, again, I am almost certain was written specifically for Oum Kalthoum to sing with orchestral backing.

The big surprise to me is that, as someone who spent 1977-1997 in record stores, that I'd never heard of her until about 15 years ago. I mean her level of fame and longevity is so unreal. I don't see how that happened.

I only found out about her by accident, the last year I was in St. Paul. I visited friends in Boston, and stumbled onto this store in Harvard Square called Daff and Raff, where I bought three CDs, one by Oum Kalthoum -- and was blown away. That would have been 1996 or 97

Rawk~Pop Musics kind of only incidentally have coincided with direct Political regime change - or even presented a kind of proxy or even sham pantomime of them. Generally speaking ...your MC5s & Phil Ochs aside... Compared to BobMarlry or FelaKuti - Rawk is hardly Revolutionary... tom tom i had to leave quickly earlier but went back and saw your posts...
so, regarding "mediated" i maybe could find a better word but never tried to articulate it before.
what i mean is their innocence in those early recordings makes the fact that they're simply performing, and not displaying much actual feeling much more acceptable for me... like, a child is cute getting up there and singing, generally...and both Ella and Billie were very young -~15-16 years old.
so, their "innocence" is attractive, regardless of whatever over-the-top vocal acrobatics they do.
