I like Chet Baker, but not to that extent. On the other hand, Ella is a goddess here (we credit her for making peace when in the car. MsJazz is a Musical Theater buff, I'm pretty much an omnivore, but had to learn Musical Theater over the years, now enjoy it a lot. The Ella Fitzgerals/Louis Armstrong duet albums were a constantly on in the car, managed to cover both our tastes and keep the peace!)

Considering, say, the 'First' album in 1967, they were just then a year behind TheBeatles stylistically, you might say. Course - emulating 'Revolver' is not the worst thing anyone could do. It was a whole SubGenre in a way (every Beatle Album is - if you cared to consider it so). But listening to this one - the Bas always had great Songs - & quirky but concise Arrangements. In fact ...it occurs to me that their Disco period - Commercially gargantuan obviously - may have paradoxically prevented assessing their accomplishments in other respects ...tho maybe also that's like calling *any* Beatles track 'obscure' : one has to qualify the meaning in that context...

I was thinking about the whole Disco Sucks thing the other day when I heard a Finnish language version of Gaynor's "I Will Survive". I was born wayyy after the 1970s so I do not know about that era, only from what I have read or seen. I really don't understand so much hate for a genre. It really does seem that there was racism/homophobia involved in that hate for Disco.

You're right about how disco won at the end. Just like Gloria Gaynor sang "I Will Survive", it survived in various dance music. Take Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" in the 1980s, LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk is Playing at my House" from 2005, Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" from 2013 andd the list goes on. Disco rules. Even Blondie and the Rolling Stones knew it early on.

I agree that there was racism and homophobia in the whole "Disco Sucks" thing (I was around in the 60s and 70s, I'm an alte kocker, or old fart in Yiddish). I was born in 1963 & raised in a smalltown far from the City
- & push back on the Racist Homophobic narrative a bit.
Disco overtook everything for years & years. In the City - & @ the beginning - maybe it was about Queers, People of Color & heavy drug users.
When & Where I was - it was the precise *opposite* ! The Jocks were all into trendy Disco - & us Stoner Outsiders were the Rawkers.
So much Disco was Formulaic & pandering crap. *Now* they cherrypick - & give you NileRogers & DonnaSummer. Which *are* great. But that's barely the smallest fraction of what we force-fed - on *all* the Radio - in all the Charts - in all the Venues (which stopped having Live Bands)
...it was yer Dad wanting to be John Travolta.
It was unremittingly & interminably awful.
I real sorry - but that's my own perspective on the reality of what occurred.

You can cherry pick any genre-is every British rock album every released a masterpiece? Was evey 60s punk band innovative? Usually 90-95% of everyhing is crap, the cream sits at the top of the percentiles.
Having said that, Disco's main problem (to me), was the constant 4 beats to the measure bass drum in every track. But above that, some of the finest "soul singing" of the time was happening. (And that 4 bass beats to the measure stipp powers current dance music, which is one of the ways Disco Won in the end)

& as you acknowledge - & as I stated earlier - a great mass of Disco was asphyxiatingly Formulaic. As George Clinton said - like making love with just one stroke. & that is *not* good Soul or Funk ...or anything else.

Drives me nuts when you have to chose performers at different stages playing at the same time.

And, I also try not to go to shows I need to stand for the whole time (I did go to a standing set of All Time Low not long ago, though, managed to dance through it. MollyJazz's favorite band!)

Quite simply - Amplification & PAs have changed over the eras - one gets delivered quite serious Volume & Bass directly into your face in small venues.
Been years since I would think of going to a Show without earplugs as @ least an option.
The irony is standing near my Marshall practice amp in my own room here 12' feet away from this laptop - I can't bring myself to stick things in me earz for what I produce myself ...but that's none of your interest...

I've tried a few ear plugs to bring down the SPL's at concerts, including one set from acs, a premium set. I really want to avoid (more) hearing loss/damage, but I find they dull the sounds, block out the high frequencies to a significant, unpleasant extant, making the concert less enjoyable. In the end, I always wind up taking them out.
