I can proudly say that I owned Funhouse on vinyl when it first came out in 1970. It still sounds great 53 years later. For me it's a triumph of raw emotional expression over crude execution. (Although Steve Mackay's playing is more than crude. Did he ever record another record?) Really it's a work of raw emotional expression because of its crude execution. Lester Bnags wrote a long and insightful review of Funhouse that's available in Psychotic Reactions & Carburetor Dung.

Its tough.. I bought my first Stones album in mono at EJ Korvettes on Route 22. I've listened to them over the decades, seen them live when they were good and not so good. When I hear the new I can't forget the old and that makes it tough to appreciate the new on its own. Real tough

It’s pretty funny to read or watch interviews with bands like the Stones, The Who etc. from the early to mid-60s where they said they only expected to be around for 2 to 3 years. Now 60 years and counting for the Stones. They should have called it a day after Exile. Would have gone out as legends.

That we're talking about them and that their new music is gaining this much attention 60 years on pretty much indicates that they're living legends. I disagree Frank. The best thing certain bands did in terms of preserving their “legacy” was to call it a day when they did (whether by design or being dictated by circumstances). The Beatles and Sex Pistols immediately come to mind.

I'd still walk miles now to see the Stones ...rightly to wrongly.
But who can remember being excited about anything new they Recorded ?
Maybe ...just barely.
In the *real* long view ...there's BobBrainen saying that when they lost BrianJones they lost their rainbow. Brian was both a spiritual lodestar artistically ...& a lodestone around their necks practically
...so - without him - they ran fast - & far. Especially right after him.
...But - to gradually less relevant places.
As for being the Stone that's kept on Rolling ...well they're essentially without comparison like this. Certainly for anyone that has mattered that much ...which would be, well ...who else, really...

The show I saw at Shea Stadium on what I believe was the Steel Wheels tour was horrendous. But then a few years ago I saw them at Giants Stadium and it was incredible. I think one thing with some of the older acts...in say the 80's they were trying to sound "contemporary" and play a lot of new material or (worse) older material they tried to make sound new. In more recent years these acts have given more thought to what made them special in the first place and realized they should play to their strengths much more.

The real question is - what sort of bad habits & situations would it have gotten Jeff into. Cause that was the *real* issue with being around the RollingStomes in that whole period.

You definitely do, but that was kind of a weird one in the sense that it was really Faces (with Rod Stewart) but in America they were worried that nobody would be the record if it was a "new" band. Which is kind of funny because outside of "Itchykoo Park" nobody was buying Small Faces records in America!
