I heard an ad on AM radio (probably KFRC in SF) in 6th grade for the "Mothership Connection" album. I already liked "Tear the Roof Off" from the radio, and the radio ad had this whole spaceship vibe going on, so I think I asked for it for my birthday or Chanukah. Loved it, but didn't dive down the rabbit hole. Years later in college I heard "Maggot Brain" on KALX and thought it was one of the strangest, deepest things I'd ever heard. And not long after found that the album in my drummer's collection. My mind had been freed. The rest followed eventually

Gary, how is that possible??
  7:38pm
Dean:

OT, can I pick your linguistic expertise about your comment @7:29? You wrote, "made less egregious by whomever...," which at first glance seems right. The pronoun is an indirect object (right?). But the pronoun isn't the entire clause: "whomever happened to be on the Drummer Stream at the time." In this context, the pronoun is the subject of the clause. I would write, "made less egregious by whoever happened...," favoring the pronoun as subject rather than object, but I've seen/heard the alternative many times. Is there a rule?

it's easy to imagine, and hard to imagine someone having much of a problem with it.

...sorry i'm such a crappy communicator so much of the time. such misunderstandings probably happen all the time with me with no one mentioning it

i had friends going to see them in the 90s but i was slow to realise how good they were (especially funkadelic)
i declined to join them.

i did see Bernie Worrell at wetlands in the late 90s... good but not amazing.

Parliament-Funkadelic should be taught in school along with James Brown, Prince, Kraftwerk, Tom Waits, Public Enemy, The Replacements, and Bikini Kill

What should be taught in school? A hard question.

I defer to the scholars themselves, despite disagreements I might have.

They're worth seeing, though of course, there's nobody in the band now who appears on the records you've been playing today other than GC. But a lot of them have been on board the Mothership for a long time. Looks like Fishbone is opening the show this weekend. (I prefer when there's nobody else on the bill but P-Funk - they have so many great songs, I could listen to them all night...)

Thanks for this, Gary! I needed it and wanted it as it gradually became clear to me that they had a much larger body of work than I had been exposed to. I never heard anything but the hits except what I heard on WFMU over the years. This is great. Thanks, again!

Marie in Chicago:

Amazing. They deserve so much more acclaim than they have received. Some of this is like divinely inspired, to me.
