some aren't aware that the mayflower actually landed on two spots on cape cod for a few days, before Plymouth, but they couldn't find fresh water - ironically, there was an "indian spring" just 100 yards away from where they landed in Eastham.

It's at texture thing, and what made them grab your ears from the get-go was that ringing sonic texture, very much informed by the Rick. So when they got into big guitars, I guess they sounded more like a lot of other bands.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi was a great album (in my opinion) undermined by an album title that sounded like a generic throwback to early Stereolab. And then Up sounded like they'd been listening to a lot of Magnetic Fields (which is not a bad thing of course! Just wasn't what a lot of people had been expecting from them). I always saw both moves as signs that like they were aware that times were slipping past them.

Murmur (1983)
- sterling, rarified, perfectly of its moment of CollegeRawk surfacing into Alternative, which is inseparable from some of us Leaving Home...
& even without that - as good as anything there is, really.

Reckoning (1984)
- the first I actually got, in fact. A little less Eternal than 'Murmur' - but paired perfectly with 'RubberSoul' & BYrdS, Velvet's third & this stack of bittersweet FolkRawks when I (as mentioned) Left Home.
That's some pretty good company, folks...

Fables of the Reconstruction (1985)
- went well with my cassette tape of Echo & the Bunnymen's 'Porcupine' - being limited in the NeoPsychedelia that could reach me then. Wonderful...

Lifes Rich Pageant (1986)
...lyrics getting a little more intelligible - but hey, still great Poetry. Indispensable.

Document (1987)
- maybe not the strongest songs but still that Southern homespun NeoPsych thang.

Green (1988)
...this one kinda missed me (or vice versa for a fable...)
Was in California by then - & other occurrences & exposures may have taken their place... It's not bad. I do remember thinking 'Stand' was okay on MTV - & I was glad they were getting more successful in the mainstream ...but @ price...

Out of Time (1991)
- these are good tracks, especially for Great Big Chart Hits ...maybe I was taking them for granted by this point. Maybe them me...

Automatic for the People (1992)
- this is another era, really. Fine songs.

Monster (1994)
- I agree with JoeB this is great. Met that PostCobain moment pointedly & effectively. Heavier sound than ever for them - & they had something to express too...

New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996)
- is okay. Kinda missed me...

Up (1998)
- we'd parted ways really. The songs I even know here are good !

Reveal (2001)
- I don't these songs.

Around the Sun (2004)
...I never heard of these...

Accelerate (2008)
- or these. I gotta feeling this could be my loss...

Collapse into Now (2011)
...don't know anything about this...

I never thought Dylan needed an electric shift, but that was more dramatic than it needed to be. The pure, staunch, unyielding acoustic folkies really blew a gasket when Dylan whipped out a Strat. But you need a backup band playing electric instruments. Regardless, his music has always been folk at heart.

Dylan of course is the Greatest & Most Significant Songwriter of All Time.
But he's also been very much about Sound. The Players he's associated with are among the Greatest - & especially for the mid1960s Trinity of BackHome - 61 - (& most especially for Sound) Blonde On Blonde. I would for instance very much equate Blonde with MarqueeMoon... This has been significant for what we've ever since thot of as the RawkMusics ...If Dylan hadn't Gone Electric - I wonder how much his innovation with Words & Thinking would've translated to the larger Culture as it had - certainly for us Rawkers...

My original comment was part of the discussion about R.E.M. evolving which led to some being disappointed. The point I was making is that artists must evolve or risk stagnancy. That is all. I only used Dylan as an example since he has reinvented himself so often.

The Fall: “They are always different; they are always the same.” -- John Peel

Same can be said for a lot of artists over the long arc of their careers. R.E.M. had a constant voice and/or vibe across their body of work. Some resonated with me more strongly than others, but it was always the same core of what drew me in in the first place.

Other acts changed in ways that totally lost the original vibe (for me), and we parted ways amicably, and i'm happy to be able to still listen to their works that i dig/dug.

I just finished the Lucinda Williams memoir, and she articulated beautifully why she had to reinvent her music, and move ever onwards for her growth as a musician and a writer. Read the book in two days, I was so entranced.

I believe those were roles, characters out of which he transitioned after a time. Then he returned (if he really had ever left) to Judaism. He continually changes his song lyrics. And, even those that remain the same are altered radically through a revised delivery—they are tailored to fit the current persona.

There's no ultimate Formula probly. It happened that - honestly - for the Form & Culture of Rawk as we know it - most of the Innovations came down in the 1960s. So the greatest Artists tended to both push that forward - & to reflect that well - some more consistently than others. TheBeatles had no Bad Albums - & they're each their own Creative Statement as well.
...Comparing the 1960s to ...just about any other time (especially since...) - I conclude that

The collision of Old European & African Musics, energies - & in fact ways of relating Earth to Spirit - is still recent & potent enuff. As Keef Richards said - there's something about the African Musics that relates to how human beings walk & f*ck. My friend Howie used to work at a Pizza Hut in Bloomington, IN circa 1990. One day, this hobo comes in and asks to use the phone. Howie gives him the phone, the hobo makes his call, and leaves the store and sits on the curb. About 20 minutes later, a limosuine rolls into the parking lot, and John Cougar gets out and greets the hobo. The hobo turns out to be Bob Dylan, and Bob and JCM get in the limo and drive away. True story.

Two drummers were the least of my criticisms of the Dylan/Dead show I saw. What I loved is that the Dead actually rehearsed and actually prepared for those shows, feeling they had to bring it for Bob. Still, I found it lackluster.

Think overall - the Dead gestated in the Acid Tests where the Band wasn't even the focus of the freakout, necessarily - & not in Clubs trying to Get Over like everybody else ever. So - they felt chasing the muse too aggressively was bad form - & would scare it off.

I've said this before on the chats but my biggest frustration with the Dead is that the drumming is so lackluster. They had 2 drummers and the best sound system in the world. & then the Dead would have spots where the Drums did their own thing entirely.
But you can't help but make such comparisons. If say - King Crimson played together as much as the Dead ?! They'd get so tight they'd warp space & time. But they'd have killed each other or themselves long long before that...
I just think for the Dead one needs a Guide who has filtered thru it all for the good stuff. (The Jesse Jarnows & such.)
