Re: Thanksong: "Thanksong begins from recordings of Miller singing along to the third movement of Beethoven’s late quartet in A minor (Op. 132), the ‘holy song of thanks’ the composer wrote to express his gratitude for (temporarily) recovering from illness. Recording herself singing along repeatedly to each of the individual parts of the quartet, Miller created an aural score where each member of the string quartet listens to their own part on headphones, playing by ear. Performed on this recording by Montreal's Quatuor Bozzini, with whom Miller has a decades-long relationship, they are joined by the British soprano Juliet Fraser, who sings material from the Beethoven quartet ‘as slowly and quietly as possible’. "The album’s fourth and final movement, Damon & Pythias, marks Jones’ chrysalis as a sonic painter. The 100-year-old building that houses Western Front [where this piece was conceived and recorded] was originally a fraternal lodge of the Knights of Pythias. When Jones arrived in 2019, he encountered a multidisciplinary space that had fully integrated art practice into daily life. Between composing, Jones spent time with Fluxus artist and Western Front founder Eric Metcalfe and explored their historical archive. “I was able to sit and converse frequently with Metcalfe about why he and other artists created Western Front and how they were influenced by a movement called Fluxus. Being there helped me remember the importance of art existing together, music alongside visual art, writing, and dance, as a way to influence one’s process and perspective.”

Does anyone else remember the Alan Burke Show? He was on Channel 5 WNEW NY. He made a point of having guests who today we might describe as Outsiders, Conspiracy Theorists, UFO people, etc. Usually he subjected his guests to withering sarcasm. I also remember seeing Frank Zappa on the show who got along with Burke surprisingly well.

Thanks for the info. I went through a real Greek mythology phase as a teenager, and then later in life, did programming of live improvised music to silent films. Alan Burke was on TV in NYC area from 1966-1969. Other guests I remember include The Mystic Barber (an early UFO contactee who wore a metal headband) and Paul Krassner, editor of The Realist magazine (who Alan Burke argued with and threw off the show). Other guests, I've read, included Norman Mailer and Allen Ginsburg. Strangely, I can't find any video of his shows online. This reminds me that I have badly failed to give a report on the rare Robin Holcomb sighting I had a couple of weeks ago. She played in a VERY obscure location about a half hour from Northampton, MA, to a small audience in a converted barn. It was an excellent show; her piano style is unique, like Eric Satie and Scott Joplin had a baby who plays dark chords when you least expected them. At the end, Wayne Horvitz came out and played the laptop (not usefully, IMO), the inside of the piano + harmonica (!), and jazz piano to back Holcomb's vocals on 3 songs. Songs ranged from her own excellent compositions to standards by Woodie Guthrie (with Horvitz's piano wire work) and Stephen Foster.

I use this term since Ikue Mori started calling her instrument "The Apple Laptop." You type on your keyboard (or use some other interface) and sounds come out. God only knows what software intervenes. In Horvitz's case, the sounds were a bit like whale calls, which I didn't find particularly interesting. He was better on the harmonica and piano strings.
