Children's Books from the 19th Century are HORRIFYING, and pretty much all nightmare fuel on a level that is sort of hard to imagine, but comparison to the kinds of books that are for kids, now. I wrote some papers on the subject in college.

There's a very good - but very difficult to read - comic book, called "Lost Girls," about Alice from Alice In Wonderland, Dorthy from Wizard of Oz, and Wendy from Peter Pan, all spending time together, debriefing about the various traumas they endured as young women, as depicted in those books.
