I once knew an upright player piano that had a 'tack' set of metal tabs on fabric nubs mounted to a full-width horizontal bar which raised and lowered between the hammers and strings with a handy pull lever. So you could turn the tacks 'on & off' in an instant.

Ah, yes, still hanging in. Hello and best, Jeff and everyone.

Would've been much better at home (put on the subtitles...), the opposite of what we expected. (My hearing is aging, not the best, but MsJazz is OK, ad she had the same problem). Possible it was the theater, but it was a fancy, high end place, big, reclining widely spaced seats, etc...

I'm not saying it's NOT your hearing (which does age, unfortunately), but: (a) trend of prioritizing effects and music over sound, (b) mixing done by filmmaker, (c) but streaming service puts the sound through another compressor to bring it in line with their other offerings, and (d) data compression. All conspire to make the dialogue inaudible. The YOUNGS are using captioning routinely now.

Hello, Dean! From that Shatz piece: "By gathering young Arab and Israeli musicians in a common musical project, Said, who died in 2003, hoped to facilitate this voyage—not for the sake of “normalizing” relations between Israel and the Arab world (as its Arab critics would later charge) but rather to lay the groundwork for cooperation once Israel ended its occupation and Palestine achieved freedom. He described the Divan—now based in Seville, in the heart of what was once Muslim Spain—as “the most important thing I did in my life.”"

No-to most Palestinians it means "Right of return" (many millions of Palestinians who left or were forced out returning to their "homes". Many still wear keys around their neck of the old houses left in 1948, that they plan to return to), and dismantling the state of Israel. That's what they've been promised, told has to happen, and it makes a settlement very problematic. (I know some American leftists think of it as just leaving the West Bank and Gaza,, though Israel left Gaza, then Hamas took control and made it front line militarily).

But the main thrust of the Palestinians is getting rid of Israel, and return of generations of refugees, (The Hamas Charter calls for the destruction of Israel,. Iran arms and finances them). Yeah, it's a grower. Very hard album to sequence into a radio show!

I think it only works on the even-numbered listens, unfortunately.

The Zionist State occupying 'Israel' again when it's already Palestine - isn't this a kind of Right to Return ?

yes it is basically an "occupation". but then, who was there first? -1000 years ago, 2000 years ago...
islam was only invented (by men, for the purpose of oppression of women, and jews, and any other religion) <2000 years ago (much as catholicism was invented to suppress women and pagans, etc)
that land was taken by violence and purging.
...but i despise the israelli government and always have. and the u.s., and the turks, and pakestan -etc etc

This is one of the themes of Naomi Klein's Doppelganger book -- the mirror reflections of things, repeating endlessly, and yet somehow we are both sides.

Great music, didn't get to comment on it much, but thanks as ever, Jeff!
