Favoriting May 7, 2024: BC Sterrett presents a marathon listen to DIY bedroom band "Bereft" from their Oddity Rock Radio promotional cassette "Candy Corn" (Circa 1999)
Back in 1997 I began a college radio show in Ogden, Utah called "Oddity Rock Radio" for KWCR 88.1 FM, which began as a midnight radio show on Saturday Nights, then after the DJ before me got fired, I took his slot from 9 PM till Midnight. My goal was to play music you couldn't find in record stores, and with the new advantage of the internet, I was able to seek out creative, unusual and outsider bedroom musicians who were posting their music online. One of my favorites was the band "Bereft," three friends who claimed the inability to play any instrument, yet felt the need to make 10 second to 1 minute "songs" and posting them online. It was so inspiring to me at the time, to claim that you had "no talent" yet produced funny and interesting music that was stupid yet imaginative. It caused me to start writing music as well and I ended up playing in several bands. My thanks to Bereft for putting their music that had been released up to that point of my inquiring for a copy of their songs to play on radio. Because their songs were so short and on cassette, it made programming difficult. Yet, I tried to squeeze them in as often as I could. AND...because their songs are so minuscule, it's great to listen to this work as a whole. Don't like a song? Wait about 8 seconds. I won't be talking much on this show or at all, to make room for more audio. Hope you enjoy this rare cassette from The Lost Media Archive :)

The DIY world of the late 90's was pretty cool. I had a lot of leftover ideas from the 70's and 80's, but we could take advantage of the nascent internet to meet each other and distribute our music. It's was pretty neat.
