Listener comments!

  9:18am Marky Boy:

I am sooooo loving this set of Jive. Yeah!
  9:52am Hugo:

Interesting outfit, this Cooke Quintet. Sort of a nouveau klezmer/Balkans touch to it. Speaking of the Balkans, off to Kosovo/Macedonia in a week or so ...
  9:54am Hugo:

Ah, I heard it was Braxton before it was up on the playlist. Unmistakable!
  10:03am Cecile:

Steve Martin also said "you can never be unhappy when someone plays the banjo"
  10:04am pat:

Right you are Doug, it's us and them--you have to make a choice: either you're Braxton or your unBraxton.
  10:04am Bill:

Doug
I'll enlist in your Anthony Braxton army!
  10:06am Parq:

There are two kinds of people in this world; people who divide the world into two kinds of people, and people who don't.
  10:08am Doug:

Ow, Parq, that hurts my head!
  10:09am Cecile:

I think some banjo would make it better.
  10:10am Wes:

Sounds pretty good to me sans banjo, let the harp speak to you
  10:12am Cecile:

The same place the "easy" button is at, Pat
  10:15am Paul Sherratt:

I wonder Cowboy Bobby ever met up with a young Ronnie Dawson ?
  10:16am pat:

I Stubbed My Toe.. this song is excellent! You could just keep playing stuff like this for the rest of the year.
  10:16am Wes:

for some reason I feel like a cold can of PBR
  10:23am bob in seattle:

It's grey and drizzly here, too. Go figure.
  10:26am pat in DC:

I'm seeing gray and drizzly too.
  10:27am Wes:

Guinness and Strongbow
  10:35am Hugo:

There are four kinds of people in this world: those who go for Guinness, those who go for Strongbow, those who go for both and those who go for none of them. No, make that three.

A Guinness in Dublin is a good thing ...
  10:40am north guinea hills:

i like this trader horn. one of the few albums that i was able to save from my old laptop.
  10:45am Parq:

Hugo, a Smithwick's in Galway City doesn't suck, either.
  10:48am pat:

Sorry folks but St. Bernardus, or St. Sixtus, or Rodenbach, or any Belgian beer blows all other beers away (and I'm Irish ).
  10:49am Hugo:

I thought the set would be somehow incomplete without Mike Cooper. Beautiful and special record, considering the backing musicians ...
  10:59am Wes:

I agree pat, the way Belgian beer is brewed in oak casks with fermented fruit, creating layers of flavor and alcohol content....mmmm..... but I'll still have a black and cider now and again (or 2 or 3)
  11:04am Hugo:

Parq, possibly so, but I have no longer any vivid recollection of what I drank while over in Galway. Possibly unsurprising. My fave beer remains "weissbier", either German or Belgian (Hoegarden). But a Guinness is still a good substitute for dinner ...
  11:11am pat:

While we're talking beer, I'm kind of done with American beer--seems like just a contest to see which beer maker can out-hop all the others.
  11:12am Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,

I drank my first four half pints of Guiness in four different bars in Dublin, aged 15. And in each bar one of the regulars would insist on paying for the drink ! Certainly seemed like a fair city that afternoon ...

What a fine folk collection that was earlier, by the way.
  11:17am Cecile:

I have to say that kind of is the case with American beers, although I have noticed a nice tendency in some newer ones to balance the hops with a toasted malt flavor which makes it most drinkable.
  11:20am Doug:

I enjoy a lot of hops but some of them are overdoing it these days indeed. Bell's Two Hearted is my current favorite.
  11:22am Hugo:

Nicole is related to Roscoe?
  11:24am Parq:

Actualmente, what makes a Smithwick's in Galway especially great is that it's in Galway. It's like those boiled hot dogs that just don't taste right unless there's a ball game in front of you while you're eating them.
  11:26am pat:

I went to college with a guy who use to be the brewmaster at Stoudts in PA. He made an amazing "Belgian-style-triple" and I've had really top-rate American beers. But mostly it's been disappointing. I agree that if you balance the hops with the malt (I was amazed that Hoppocket does this) then your okay.
  11:32am Cecile:

I like Fat Tire for that very reason. Also what St. Paul Flat Earth Brewery is doing now, too.

Also Upper Michigan has had some killer brewers lately. Jasper Ridge, Vierling and Keewenaw Brewing Co all make some nice hoppy ones that are well-balanced. Only probably is, I can't remember of their names. It's a point of pride, because we're not known for a hell of a lot else.
  11:33am Cecile:

Yay for Tani Tabbal! The Griot Galaxy mainstay!

Say Yes! to Michigan!
  11:35am Doug:

Cecile, wow! Namechecking Tani Tabbal. You're the coolest!
  11:37am Cecile:

I saw the Griots in the mid-80s. Tani was wearing some awesome metallic face paint and I had smoked way too much hash, so he looked like he was turning into a bear and I had to hide under the table. What a great night!
  11:38am Cecile:

But, sorry, Doug, no one is cooler than you!
  11:48am Paul Sherratt:

And a quick name-check if I could for my mouse mat which features the Adnams Sole Bay Brewery, Southwold, Suffolk, England.

Recommended.
  11:48am Doug:

Actually, there is a fellow in Abu Dhabi who's 23% cooler.
  11:52am Cecile:

Is that by weight or by volume?
  11:54am Lewis:

lovin' this set!!
  11:57am Hugo:

Listening to the Gnoua Brotherhood, you feel they could easily have gone on till next week, well, except for a quick bite and a brief nap ...
  12:00pm pat:

Okay, I'm trying all the beers suggested here, thanks. Thanks for the tunes Doug.
  12:01pm Parq:

Yeah, what's for lunch?
  12:02pm pat:

except Smithwick's which I hate.
