I agree pat, the way Belgian beer is brewed in oak casks with fermented fruit, creating layers of flavor and alcohol content....mmmm..... but I'll still have a black and cider now and again (or 2 or 3)

Parq, possibly so, but I have no longer any vivid recollection of what I drank while over in Galway. Possibly unsurprising. My fave beer remains "weissbier", either German or Belgian (Hoegarden). But a Guinness is still a good substitute for dinner ...

While we're talking beer, I'm kind of done with American beer--seems like just a contest to see which beer maker can out-hop all the others.

I drank my first four half pints of Guiness in four different bars in Dublin, aged 15. And in each bar one of the regulars would insist on paying for the drink ! Certainly seemed like a fair city that afternoon ...

What a fine folk collection that was earlier, by the way.

I have to say that kind of is the case with American beers, although I have noticed a nice tendency in some newer ones to balance the hops with a toasted malt flavor which makes it most drinkable.

I enjoy a lot of hops but some of them are overdoing it these days indeed. Bell's Two Hearted is my current favorite.

Actualmente, what makes a Smithwick's in Galway especially great is that it's in Galway. It's like those boiled hot dogs that just don't taste right unless there's a ball game in front of you while you're eating them.

I went to college with a guy who use to be the brewmaster at Stoudts in PA. He made an amazing "Belgian-style-triple" and I've had really top-rate American beers. But mostly it's been disappointing. I agree that if you balance the hops with the malt (I was amazed that Hoppocket does this) then your okay.

I like Fat Tire for that very reason. Also what St. Paul Flat Earth Brewery is doing now,too.

Also Upper Michigan has had some killer brewers lately. Jasper Ridge, Vierling and Keewenaw Brewing Co all make some nice hoppy ones that are well-balanced. Only probably is, I can't remember of their names. It's a point of pride, because we're not known for a hell of a lot else.

I saw the Griots in the mid-80s. Tani was wearing some awesome metallic face paint and I had smoked way too much hash, so he looked like he was turning into a bear and I had to hide under the table. What a great night!
